Really thought out build done by Micah. He was able to keep costs down, build his own power system, build a A/C unit, while keeping it stealthy looking on the outside. @@williewill78 I'm using the Cradlepoint IBR900-600m with the dock to add another 1200m model the setup is pretty costly and they've shifted to a subscription model at $180/yr so I don't recommend them anymore. You can't adjust some settings on them that helps get around certain throttling too. I'm developing some better options that i'm testing when I finish testing i'll offer them for sale on my website. Follow my mnt_off_grid insta linked above i'll post details soon. If you are in the market for something sooner I recommend the Pepwave Max Transit with at least a Cat12 modem. I'd skip any Chinese generic routers and the MoFi device which is based on those with a nearly obsolete modem. The wireless is poor and they tend to fail.
Organize an insulation / AC shootout in PHX in August hosted by Cruise n Comfort! Invite the evaporating cooler people so they can show how they defy physics with monsoon humidity... 🤦
I agree, genius. If I do go ahead with a van build, I would contact him for the battery. Lo e the temp monitoring app. I want to travel with my cats. I could rea)y use that app. Also wifi combo is a great idea.
Love how humble this guy was! Really great, affordable, and practical build. I would definitely go to him to contract the building of that battery if I was in the market.
Very nice! It’s great to see something so technical, but in a practical way rather than to just show off. He knows his priorities and made it work. Brilliant build!
Love seeing other Micahs haha! I also thought the same thing immediately when you were like “want to plug anything?” And he starts plugging friends -what a sweetheart!
I think a follow up video on just the A/C system would be great, that goes over each component in detail and talks about how he chose each part, and how he hooked them all together, and why he set it up the way he did, and talks about build outs of custom systems from scratch. There are lots of people who would want an alternative to the standard roof mounted A/C unit, but there aren't many resources out there.
Ok so beyond the "I made my own battery.... I put together my A/C", this is one of the cleanest styled van builds I've seen yet, the welded aluminum is a game changer, along with the exotic wood used. The lower bed height also got my attention since I'm 6'3" tall. The open all the way through under the bed makes a lot of sense, would allow for materials for building others vans to just 'slide right through'. Well done.
Stunning - great clean aesthetic. But - needs a shower solution if one lives in it. I mean the Wi-Fi and all the brilliant tech solutions ordered from China and Russia are totally awesome, incl your own clever AC and uber battery build but I think that it might more sense to scrap that uncomfortable leather bench in the front and use that space for a shower. Then all you have to do is come up with a really comfortable bed/couch conversion solution. Definitely brilliant but if you are older a shower and a comfortable seating/lounging/bed conversion would be a huge plus for full-time RV living. One of my favorite things is the really good-looking wall and ceiling treatments throughout it gives it a clean, coherent more spacious feeling. Impressive and well thought out overall, although the open overhead storage bins add visual clutter which doesn't mesh with the clean, concealed aesthetic you created throughout.
He is amazing! I love how he uses high tech to problem solve and monitor temp for their pets! I couldn't do this on my own! I love how he balanced aethetics with practicality and didn't sacrifice on what's important to him, starting with an awesome newer van that had the best safety and tech features. This was super 👌 cool AND practical. Love the use of aluminum for less weight; love that he used wool insulation and insulated floor too. Awesome build; awesome tech and beautiful and practical materials. I hope I can get at least the tech sorted out when I start my van life project. Thanks so much for this awesome tour and video!
I was considering a diy 24v air conditioner, learned all about phase change heat pumps, then concluded it works be more cost effective to just buy a mini split. Nice van!
Some people use "fake tiles". I wouldn't use them so I used stainless steel. Then 2 minutes later proceeds to explain how he used "Fake leather". LOL. I did love this awesome build.
Nice to see a conversion done inexpensively but with smart, low weight materials. Toilet in a bag may make more sense than cassettes that have to be cleaned out. Van that fit a bed across are the way to go.
Just wow! The wood is gorgeous! The aluminum frame added a real touch of class and a clean ascetic. Got a bit distracted and missed how you cook. You did an amazing job. Building your own battery is certainly above and beyond. I shared your video on my Flipboard ezine: Viaggiare del Mondo. Happy and safe trails.
Micah, one van lifer to another, that's an awesome rig. The only thing I saw you may want to grab/investigate is another low cost peace of mind. Ravenwolf Marine makes this pad that goes under your mattress, its called Den-dry condensation control. It's awesome stuff and inexpensive, please check it out. Definitely one of the best products I've found. I wish you and yours happy, safe adventures, and many laughs! ✌
This guy is just like me. I built everything custom in my tiny-house. I'm planning a tiny-house on wheels that will have much of what this guy has, with a full bathroom included.
