Here's how to re-purpose a Vienna Sausage can to make a simple alcohol burner that you can use practically anywhere to boil water or cook a meal.
For making the holes around the circumference of the can, a knife blade, an awl (such as are found on most Swiss Army knives and many multi-tools), or a nail is really all that's required.
The distance of the holes from the lip of the can be varied; the farther from the lip they are (within reason), the wider the spread of the flames will be when you put a skillet, pan or pot atop the stove.
We have tried Trangia-style burners and "penny stoves," and have found that each one has its advantages and disadvantages. However, they all work and you can cook over any of them. Most alcohol burners, this one included, are pretty vulnerable to wind, so having a wind screen of some kind is a good idea.
