I tested out the new wide angles zoom lens from Tamron during my travels through Europe. The 17-28mm lens proved a fierce competitor to the Sony 16-35mm GM. Ideal for travelers who want to pack light and still create high quality content.

We use both the 28-75 + 16-28 on almost every video we do and on most jobs in my professional life. I’m impressed for the price, for sure. Love the standard filter thread size. AF works great, no complaints here. Build is my main knock against it, feels cheap and the zoom range can be limiting at times. However for under a grand, it’s pretty good for gimbal work or throwing on a slider. Great upload man, subbed, keep it up!

It's very subtle, but I like the way the GM renders colors better. But the size, weight, and price led me to buy the Tamron. I also have the 28-75mm and Sony 85mm that share the 67mm filter thread size. Colors can always be tweaked in post and the Tamron is plenty sharp.

Well said my friend! I'm not too bothered by the color difference as well, all can be done in post. But isn;t it amazing that the tamron can be sharper than the Sony native lens! haha so awesome!

good video, im in the middle of being decisive between 2875 and 2470 gmaster, i want 24mm but i dont want to carry another lens for 4-6mm FL if i have to buy two lenses to cover 24-70 then i think paying extra for one lens i.e 2470 isnt a bad deal unless u really need 17-24 FL more, besides this i would be waiting for sigma 24-70 which will be around 1300$ and it comes with AF/MF button and as well as AFL button, I have used 2875 great lens but i have seen in zone focus mode it little bit hunts for focus sometimes, and also in low light, lets see how good will be sigma, i used sigma lenses with A6500 what a masterpieces they have made for APSC. keep up the good work.

You want the focus to be on the back. I like it my hands never comes close to the lens while focusing. It's better in my opinion

Well that's true, I'm finding it difficult to use focus motors just cause the Tamron focus ring is so close to the body.

will this lens suitable for 4k60FPS video captured ?.....will it have a bit delay in focus when swift from one another mm setting....?.....Kindly advise...Thanks to Shawn...

Hey! So far I have no issues shooting 4K at 24fps, i do not have a camera that can do 4k 60fps at the moment so I cant be sure. The focus is pretty reliable as much as I can tell, but have yet to test the focus while using the zoom ring. Maybe will do a test like that int he future! :)

Just a heads up, if anyone’s thinking of getting this lens, don’t buy from jessops. Since lockdown all there customer service options are down (even though they are claiming they’re are still fully operational) and my order is still pending after a week. They don’t even email you with an order confirmation. So I’ve just handed over £800 with no information as to the status of my order. I also payed for next day shipping which obviously didn’t happen, so I’ll be getting that refunded when they start replying to emails again.

Well to me I felt that the Tamron was pretty on par with Sony, so I’d say the Tamron might be a better pick compared to the Sony 16-35 f4. The difference in the f-stop to me is the most important.

I've owned both. In my opinion the Sony at 35mm loses a lot of sharpness anyway.. so that's not much of an advantage. I did get some cool shots with it during the day, but I just never felt that comfortable with the f4 at night. And it's MUCH heavier and about $300 more expensive. So ultimately I ended up selling the Sony and getting the Tamron. It's a better gimbal lens as well if you do video work (so much easier to balance).

how is the video quality when shooting in apsc mode to get 25-42mm ?? can it be used as replacement till 42mm. I am on a tight budget and can afford one lens with sony 7 iii.

Are you intending to shoot on an APS-C camera or use the APS-C crop mode on a full frame?

@@ShawnKoh I will be shooting in full frame. My main purpose is for videos. Since i am on a tight budget I want to get only one lens. I thought tamron 17-28 will give me ultra wide to wide focal range and using crop mode I can shoot till 42mm. I think for videos this focal range would be mostly used. What you suggest? Is there any other focal range better suited?

@@ShawnKoh Thats what I did. I got it for the Sony A7iii, specifically for real estate. Works great, though, I wish lightroom had a preset for it. The preset the is recognized is the Tamron 25-75 lens, not 17-28. Then again, I shoot Jpeg for real estate so, that isn't much of an issue for me.
