Good review mate! I’m also lucky enough to have my hands on the lens and absolutely love it for weddings/gimbal work - the crop mode on the a7iii also allows a more “normal” field of view as well which I think is handy. Agree with all the points you made!

Hi Simon, thanks so much mate. Yeh I forgot to mention that with crop mode you're actually getting 17- 42mm 2.8 which is really fantastic and yesterday while filming the first dance I was able to get some wide sweeping shots mixed in with a few tighter shots of it and I think I prefer it to using the 28-75mm.

Thanks so much man. Yeh at the moment I do keep the steady shot on while using the lens but I have heard somewhere that if you ever do work on telephoto lenses on gimbal or gidecam to turn steady shot off. By telephoto I think it means 50mm and above. But for the wide lenses it won't make a difference having steady shot on or off I believe

Nice review! Got this lens coming in the next week or so. I'm really curious how I'll feel about the focus by wire. I've used lenses across the board (Rokinon, Sigma, and Panasonic) so I'm used to everything from really nice manual focus to so so manual focus to pretty bad manual focus, so we'll see. I do use autofocus very often on my A7iii and FX9 these days though. It just works so well that in most shooting scenarios I trust it more than myself. Especially shooting events or fast action. I think that'll be a worthwhile tradeoff for the lighter lenses. I end up grabbing my GH5 a lot with the Sigma 18-35 and Panasonic 35-100 because I don't have time to mess with switching primes in real world situations.
@pavguliani
@pavguliani 3 года назад
Thanks Brian mate. Yeh the focus by wire is definitely something that can be worked with but the regular mechanical focus ring is so much better. I use autofocus pretty much all the time for run and gun with it but if i'm on a tripod manual focus works well and don't forget you can also tap to focus on the lcd screen and lock it that way rather than using the ring itself. And yeh i'm the same I only own one prime lens and barely use it. Zooms all the way for me especially when the are fixed aperture zooms that can go to 2.8.

Hi Danyal! Thanks very much for watching! Yes atm these are the two lenses I use with my A73 95% of the time with the other lens being a sigma art 35mm 1.4 every now and again. I think they both give me everything I need and take up minimal space in the bag. The lighting setup is a 120d mark 1 with the aperture space light attachment and a little cheap yongnuo LED light to provide a bit of an edge light. I have another video about it on my channel called basic lighting tutorial. Thanks for noticing the lighting setup mate :)

awesome review - I subscribed! One question, I emulated a James Matthews video similar to your smoothie video but I used the Sony 12-24 which I rented and is just too expensive. My question is when you shot that smoothie video, did you use a gimbal for those shots or was it handheld?
@pavguliani
@pavguliani 4 года назад
Thanks again Jo. No it was all handheld at 100fps and then speed ramped where I thought I would need to. Shooting at 100fps allows you to do your movements quickly which allows you to get smoother handheld shots than if you were shooting in 25p but slowly as that would be very jittery footage. I think because I was mainly just shifting my body weight for the movements rather than walking there was no need for a gimbal. Also if you use a wide lens then the small movements with your body going back and forward seem like much bigger movements. Thanks for subbing!

@pavguliani

Honestly I can't hear anything in terms of auto focus noise. I think this is possibly because it's lowest aputure is only 2.8 on a wide lens so the auto focus is never working that hard compared to a 50mm at 1.4 for example but yeh the short answer is the autofocus works to the standard of a native Sony lens without any noise 👍

Thanks Cleva! Yeh both awesome lenses and look out for the new 17-70mm 2.8 from tamron which will be a hybrid of both of these lenses. Haha awesome man big congratulations, take care of that little baby as if it was an actual little baby 😂. I would have definitely jumped innit if it wasn't such a rubbish year financially and $4000 would have been a big hit but next year fingers crossed🤞🤞🤞. Take care dude

I was curious, while you were filming this video how far away were you from the camera? Seems like you were arms distance. The reason why I'm asking is I"m going to be doing videos and I'm debating on either getting the Tamron 17-28mm or the Sigma 14-24mm Art Lens. Let me know what you can please. Thank you.
@pavguliani
@pavguliani 2 года назад
Hey mate. Yes I was about an arm's distance away, possibly a bit more. Personally I'd choose the 17-28 tamron as I love how lightweight it is compared to the sigma but that's just what I need personally. If you're not bothered about weight then sigma is a great choice too

@@pavguliani Thanks for quick reply. I was also curious, what about the Tamron 17-70mm. What's the difference with using that lens compared to the Tamron 17-28mm lens for videoing at arms distance? I'm wondering if they would essentially work the same?
@pavguliani
@pavguliani 2 года назад
@@punknugget561 17-70 is for apsc cameras like the Sony A6 series not the the full fram A7 series
@punknugget561
@punknugget561 2 года назад
@@pavguliani Oh okay, now I get it. So that 17-70mm is not the same width and depth as would be for the 17-28mm lens. I get it. I was wondering, because you would think the 17-70mm would be the better lens for a better cost (as you're getting more), but obviously that's not the case. Thank you for your explanation. Can't wait to get my Sony A7C soon. Got off of eBay for a great price and practically brand new. Looking forward to getting this set up soon. Thanks again for your quick replies. :-).

tamron 17-28 f2.8 and sigma art 14-28 f2.8 whichone good for video .
@pavguliani
@pavguliani 4 года назад
I have not used the sigma art 14-28 yet so I could not give you a concrete answer but if you like to manual focus for video and you need to go a bit wider than 17 on occasions then I guess the sigma will be your best bet otherwise the light weight and portable nature of the 17-28 tamron would be my choice especially if you are mainly using auto focus in video.

I own the sigma 24-70 f2.8 ..great lense ... I was thinking of getting the sigma 14-28 f2.8 and the hurdle for me is that its a fish eye lense and you cannot put your nd filter or any protective filter at the front ...so here I am debating between 17-28 f2.8 tamron, or zeiss 16-35 f4 or sell a kidney for the 16-36 f2.8 gm 🤣

ok, thanks. I really use manual focus, the most, like all in film videowork etc. I mean what you really mena with tehe manual focuse it will get jumpy you mean: i have the osny 24-105, and a tamron 35, f.1.8 I those lenses is great fro me to amnueal frocuse, why it this lens diffeent ?
@pavguliani
@pavguliani Год назад
No worries. If you're ok with 24-105 and tamron 35 manual focusing then the 17-28 will also be ok for you as they are all focus by wire. I can from using canon lenses to manual focus and they are not focus by wire that's why it was not easy for me to get used to focus by wire manual focusing 👍

@@pavguliani ahhhhh. You jsust seem to skip over som eimprtant things. Did you use this lense really a lot , at all ? I mean the manual focusing, some say, is problamatic, coz,it does not smoothly transist, its jumpy, that is what manual focuseing is about .
