Great show guys. That tool of the day is awesome, I will get one. I hope i can get it for Thursday as I need to put a small cu with pen fault detection in for a hot tub installation. It's rather strange how these fuses and seals end up in a slightly different location, some things just can't be explained. A bit like the after life.

Another trick with the Qmax punches is if it's a bit tougher/thicker metal you're going through, a random bit of metal conduit makes a great extension bar for the allen key so you can get more torque on it ;)

Those Panel Cutters you are using to cut the holes out are brilliant, I used to use them over 40yrs. ago while working in the motor trade. We used them for cutting out the hole in the car wings for the wing mirrors, (mirrors were fitted on the wings in my early days). I think the panel cutter is still in my toolbox now.......

14:51 so weird that you are not allowed to unplug the melt-fuse in UK .. In Belgium we have a standard MCB at the meterbox .. single fase is usally 40A .. 3fase usally 25A ( on a small house ) so in uk if you blow the main melt-fuse .. you have to call DNO ..

It's not the DNO responsible for installing isolators, it's whomever the energy supplier is for that customer. I install them whenever it looks like electrical work might need to be done, or the customer asks for one. But agreed, they should be installed as standard when the meter goes in for the first time.
@shubz4699
@shubz4699 3 года назад
same here but space can be an issue alot of the time, i only fit isolator when cables undersized or if customer asks.
@alerighi
@alerighi 3 года назад
Or put the isolation into the meter itself. In my country is standard, also because it's the only way to isolate, if you cut the seals you will get serious trouble (it is a crime to do so). The breaker built into the meter also gives some basic form of short circuit and overload protection to the installation (that you shouldn't rely on, in fact you should install a small consumer unit after the meter anyway to protect the cable between the meter and the consumer unit inside your house. Still in a lot of older installations that was not done and the only protection of the cable is the meter breaker itself).
@0liver0verson9
@0liver0verson9 3 года назад
@@alerighi The UK does have some meters with an integral isolator, I know of two types. But all the smart meters I've dealt with do not have one unfortunately.

How convenient this video dropped on the day Efixx did their meter box video. Depending on your DNO we work with Western/ S&S/ UKPN and S&S has actually been taking DP isolators out after energy suppliers or ourselves have fitted them. It would appear they don't want electricians to work safely. Great video though disconnect DC before AC side on panels, allows the system to discharge.
@mathman0101
@mathman0101 3 года назад
Once you isolate do you test for DC leakage onto the AC side just to be sure? i.e. parasitic capacitance between PV and earth? I suspect given the different inverter and AC/DC hook-ups it’s more or less of a problem especially under fault conditions. What leakage suppression technology is being used in the UK?

"Customer needs anything done. Let's rip out the fuseboard first." - I'll never get why UK sparks like that so much.
@jsva8661
@jsva8661 3 года назад
Don't know abut in UK, but in Portugal its common practice for qualified sparkies to call the DNO and get permission to unseal a meter or a fusebox over the phone. Even to replace blown fuses if the sparky takes over responsibility over installation. They happily give out the seal numbers (we use plastic seals) and if they match, sparky can do it. DNO later comes out to collect old seals and re-seal everything. They see it as free maintenance on their stuff.... :)

@donzotv1667
@donzotv1667 3 года назад
Word of advice always isolate the DC isolators first then the AC isolators, otherwise you are still isolating them under load i always wait 30 seconds to a minute before isolating full to give the inverters a chance to discharge. if you hurt yourself I cant bare the thought of Jordan coming back full time ;) much better vids with you my ol boy!
@tceng9449
@tceng9449 3 года назад
They should cope with either side being isolated first, but it's the DC side that has capacitors to discharge. There will be some capacitors on the AC side but the big juicy ones are on the DC side. 30 seconds seems pretty arbitrary, I believe those are Solis inverters (which is not a brand I'm all that familiar with) who recommend 5 minutes post isolation before opening the inverter. SMA (the brand we normally use) recommend 20 minutes. I don't think I've ever deliberately waited that long, I just assume everything is live (which you have to anyway with solar). Generally it's easier to break a load on the AC side as it has zero crossing points to break any arcs. From a "being kind to your switchgear" perspective you're normally best turning the AC off first, that's what Solis recommends as does SMA. In the real world I tend to just isolate whichever one my hand gets to first.
