Opening a can of worms? More like a box of fireworks! Looks like this house has 4 generations of wiring all of which have been left and integrated together. You can guarantee there’s nightmare joints hidden everywhere. Spurs off spurs off spurs with wrong sized cables all over the place. DIYers upon DIYers all worked on this one, the blind leading the blind. A complete liability disaster zone. VERY BRAVE MEN! 👍

Seen those types of houses before, there is all manner of stuff lurking under paint, wallpaper and overboarded wood etc. The worst part would be if it was "professionals" who had undertaken the electrical work in that house.....

@@GavinLawrence747 Oy my mum does a cracking job of wall papering over all the cracks. She started by trying to paint everywhere at my new house, she was most disappointed when me and my dad ripped all the plaster of the walls and proceeded to gut everything. Look mum it's falling down, you can't just paint that wooden lintel it's rotten, I can push my pencil through to the otherside! She means well but she should stay away till the jobs nearly finished.. 🙂

We All know (or should know) the fuses that contain asbestos, wear the appropriate ppe, don't disturb the pads double bag and dispose of in the prescribed Manor. Don't want to sound like I'm preaching, bit it doesn't take much to start the time bomb ticking.

I think what you've got is TRS cable, VIR is singles with rubber insulation and an outer layer of fabric. That place is almost every nightmare rolled into one!

VIR (or VR) was used in twin & T&E formats as well as singles - most pre '60s cabling was clad in VIR (or cotton!). During the' 60s early forms of PVC cable took over. TRS is a general term for any cable that has a tough rubber outer sheath which may or may not consist of vulcanised rubber. Modern forms will generally use a stabilised rubber to reduce the ageing process.

As a fibre engineer... I'm not sure why I find this entertaining but I do.. and it helped me create my own fibre channel.. though I do blur out company logo etc.. a keen eye can spot the company a mile off I guess. and no.. the channel is not linked to this account.

Cory, Glad to see you are up and about again after your back episode. This is a nightmare and needs a rewire . Once you touch it. its yours going forward. Professional Cory needs to tell emotional Cory to leave the customer know what you have seen and the fire risk he is living in . Spend the money to do it properly . Because the Insurance Company will not pay out should should some future event happen. Anyway I know you will do your best and again ,Fair dues to you to get stuck in and to follow your thinking process as you do it. On a side note; Love the shots of the hair and the product you use to have it look sharp on film. I think all that sugar is going to that head of yours not only to fire those synapses of yours but to fertilize your roots. Cant wait for episode two.

Hi grate video what a mess never seen so many cables and old consumer units I not a electrician just have a keen interest in electrical installation and TRS cable I believe is used up to the 1950s and has a life span of about 25years

Whilst it's best to play safe, those asbestos flash pads are safe as long as you don't break them up - standard approach is to remove the carriers from the board and double bag them before disposal via a licensed waste firm. Throwing that board down after cutting the cables risks disturbing the asbestos & creating dust....

I always carry a can of shaving cream.. asbestos dust be gone. Iv been in the game 40 years and we just don't see stuff like that in NZ. Always interested to know what it's like in other countries and how there regs differ.

Two cables through separate holes does not create a heating effect at domestic current levels, that theory has been tested and found wanting. See John Wards test video.

BITD (80's) I used to walk into property for an inspection and If I saw dollies I would assume VIR and mark it REWIRE. We had a team specifically on Rewires who would follow up. This was local authority housing stock and you would know from the address on route Id be thinking rewire candidate. The Dollies would confirm it.

5:38 the red flash guard looks to have a white pad in there which looks a lot like asbestos.. only say because I’ve seen and changed a lot of the same fuse boards on an old estate in London, luckily had them tested and it wasn’t it but be careful!

I would do everything new because I dont think that it is worth sorting 2 or 3 circuits from 20 or so out out....Think positiv at least you didnt find 5 copper lines whitout any isolation, that was the old cooker circuit in the last house I have done... (3x 230V+PEN at 16A 2,5mm²). I hope you all are doing well..at least now that the Virus is back in the UK.

Those kitchen ceiling lights... Really? They put a suspended ceiling right underneath and left those old fluorescent tube light fixtures in place, therefore having to do huge cutouts off the wooden panels which had to be covered with translucent plastic? How inefficient lighting can be...

@@OBWanKenobi Firstly, he disturbed nothing, he pulled a fuse and replaced it immediately. There is nothing more that he could have done. Secondly, how will anything "catch up" with them when they were not exposed. Lastly, Asbesdosis is mostly an occupational hazard, of course he was heavily exposed to asbestos in a power station, they are riddled with it.

@@OBWanKenobi You clearly don't live in the real world. Pulling a fuse out carefully will not disturb the asbestos cloth as it is not physically moving any of the fibres. From what is seen in the video the asbestos present within these fuses would be Chrysotile, while you should of course avoid any kind of exposure, it is not as bad as any other form of asbesdos if exposure were to accidentally occur, the lungs can clear Chrysotile.

You claim that I have a lack of knowledge and then call a fibre a "spore" How about you look into it yourself, if you work in/around a power station (even in the offices) you will have in the past been exposed to large quantities of asbestos, workmen coming and going with it all over their shoes/gloves etc... There are occupational safety limits, while of course any exposure is bad not all exposure is equil. There are many different types of asbestos and your comment just proves that you don't know about any of it.

@@OBWanKenobi Again, you are not living in the real world, if the board needs to be moved or changed that will require... moving it... If a fuse blows and you need that power for heating etc in the winter... it must be replaced. Not everyone lives in a fairytale world, you mitigate issues by taking appropriate action, ie slow deliberate motions, not digging or poking anything. Not doing anything is not an option most of the time. This is why there is an entire guidebook by HSE detailing how to deal with asbestos.
