TOYOTA LANDCRUISER PRADO TRIM LEVELS EXPLAINED. Ever looked at the badges on a Prado and wondered what TX, TX-L, GX, GX-L, TZ, TZG, VX, VX-L or Kakadu mean? They are not decorations but rather differentiate the Prado variants. Here is a brief post to get you some information about the different trim levels of the Prado. For starters, the Landcruiser Prado is in its fourth generation referred to as J150 series. It’s a proven offroader loved by many, including your favourite politician. It could be easily the most driven SUV in Kenya. The J150 series comes with four powertrains, 2.7l petrol, 2.8l diesel, 3.0l diesel and a 4.0l petrol V6. The SUV comes as a 5-seater or 7-seater. Like any other model, the Prado is available in many variants. The trims differ in terms of specifications and the niceties in each. The available variants include TX, TXL, GX, GXL, LC (1-5), TZ, TZG, Altitude, VX, VXL and Kakadu. It is worthwhile to note the trims depend on the market or country of origin. For example, if you’re getting a Prado from Europe or the UK, you’ll find names like LC1, LC2, LC3, LC4 and LC5 in order of superiority. The TZG is the highest spec trim if sourcing from Japan. The TZ comes second, TX-L third while the TX sits at the bottom. Kakadu leads the pack for Prados originating from Australia. After the Kakadu, you'll find the VX-L, VX, Altitude, GX-L and GX, the lowest spec. For those lucky enough to source for a ‘locally assembled’ unit, the VX-L is the highest possible trim. Lower than the VX-L are VX, TX-L and TX. Those who are keen will find an Australian VX packs more features than a local VX. There is no much difference between the highest trims from various origins. For example, the VXL is similar to the LC5 and TZG only that in the former you’ll find the spare mounted on the trunk door (gives room for an extra sub-tank) and in the latter, it is fitted below the boot. The top-spec trims from various regions have a multi-terrain select system, Active Height Control(common in the TZ), crawl control, cool box, soft leather electric seats, rear entertainment, a sunroof and powerful engines. It is what earns them the tag ‘fully loaded’ often misused by people using it on the base trims. Going down the ranks, you miss out on some features. Some trims have specific powertrains. For example, the TZ-G only comes with a 2.8l diesel or the mighty 4.0l petrol V6. The 2.7l is common in the base TX and GX trim. For the 3.0l diesel you’ll find it in TX, TX-L, VX, VXL, in most Ex-UK LC 1-5 and the Kakadu versions. In the base TX trim, you’re highly likely to get fabric upholstery. A sunroof is an option in this trim and not a standard feature. In the high trims, leather upholstery becomes more common, but it comes in different qualities. The leather in a Kakadu is different from the leather in a TX-L. There is no exact sequence to be followed in the trims because you can find a TX with leather upholstery and a sunroof while some TX-L lack both. In some instances the first buyers in the overseas can customise their units before delivery. That’s why you may find a base model with extras found in the higher trims. Nevertheless going up the ranks, there is a high likelihood of finding a better interior, better tech. and in some circumstances, more powerful engines. All factors constant, the Kakadu is the most expensive Prado, while the TX and GX have the lowest price tag.
