Kim you don't give yourself enough credit RU-vidrs are just people who have people skills and clearly you have them in spades! Feel free to come back and add in anytime!
Honestly Kim’s perspective and experience trying to replicate what Ed and Emily do was super fun to watch! This was a really good video, one of my favorite! Your employees seem great 💜
I just saw this video and wanted to share a story with everyone on egg eaters. We got an egg eating pair a few years ago. We did our research and knew we only had button quail eggs available around here, so we asked the seller (who I will not name, they were a popular online reptile retailer) to only give us a male and female pair who had both been on button quails or bigger. I emailed and called twice to confirm, and they said the boy was a little smaller but he could manage on buttons. Long story short, this wasn't true. He could not eat anything bigger than a finch egg. We struggled for a year to find a reliable finch egg supplier, but our guy could never sell us more than 6 every few months and that wasn't enough. In between, we had to tube feed - which of course Jonathan (the boy snake) hated and so did we. He would thrash his little tail around and it was difficult to even find a small enough tube for his little throat. After a year of him not getting any bigger and thus still not eating button quail eggs, we knew we couldn't give him a good enough life with us. So we reached out to Snake Discovery and they were kind enough to take them both in. I'm not sure if Mina was the one to lay this clutch, or if her name has been changed since then, but they helped us out during a really bad situation and I will be forever grateful. Mina laid a huge clutch shortly before I sent her and I didn't catch it in time, so they all deflated. So I'm so glad she's somewhere that if she lays another clutch they'll get to grow up there. If you're still reading, here's why I'm writing this: if you want to get an egg eating snake and you can't get one from Ed and Emily who are trustworthy, NEVER trust the snake will be large enough to eat larger eggs. The vast majority of these snakes are wild caught, and they take them at all different stages of life. Also, the males are significantly smaller than the females. So my advice would be only get one if you have access to finch or canary eggs, and request a female instead of a male. You could also just get a pair of finches and make sure they are laying BEFORE getting the snake(s), as they require a couple of eggs a week in my experience. This was our plan down the road when we were ready to breed them, but we couldn't find a laying pair for sale right away in our area. Thank you for reading, egg eaters make the best pet snakes I've ever owned if you can find their preferred food! 🙂
Such a shane it's so difficult to find them food because they would be perfect pet sbakes otherwise as I can't stand feeding mice to snakes, it's so nasty and I feel bad for the mice. If you get finnes you really need to know how to care for them though before getting tge snakes or have another sure suplier. Sorry you where scammed that they could eat bigger eggs
Welcome to the Snake Discovery family, Kim! Your footage was great and your spaced theme egg art is awesome!I hope we see more of the staff, they all seem pretty heckin cool.
yes! i just had a thought that in the future the staff might take videos and share their perspective, especially when Emily and Ed are gone. would probably make for a lot more Shenanigans!
I was so shocked that the moldy egged hatched at all and it was actually the first one to hatch and all on his own too...what a strong little man. So glad all three made it super cute. Always love a surprise clutch!
For finch eggs - if you have a local aviary or other tropical greenhouse with birds (like butterfly conservatory), they may be a source. I worked at a butterfly conservatory and we were overrun with too many breeding finches, and probably would have sold some of the eggs for reptile food!
@@jackpitt8316 that's pretty much where I am on my road to CBB baby egg snake--im figuring out of I also want to have a couple of finches for eggs. Or a lot of finches and a couple of breeding pairs of egg snakes, because how awesome would it be to become The Subadult CBB Egg Snake Person? The fact that they're arid loving species is even better. (I'm from inland southern California; I love me some deserty noodles.)
@@julialungan4722 itd be easy to keep them entertained if you have a big enough cage with things to fly/climb/rest on and toys. Also do they like handling? Cuz i would pet them all day lol
The sound the adults made was terrifying, it made them sound so much bigger than they really are. I'm not afraid of snakes, but that sound would definitely make me pause and look around. Great video.
Me, a space-obsessed kid/teen who moved on to different interests as an adult: "hey! It's the eagle nebula!" Kim, if you're reading this so far past publication, you did a great job with your drawings!
Don’t sell yourself short, Kim! You’ve got a very nice voice for videos and your space-themed drawings were adorable! Also that nebula looks like the Pillars of Creation if you view it from the right angle. 😊
3D printer enthusiast here. Yeah you can either seal it with epoxy, or this stuff called modge podge that's used to seal paint. It'll seal the crevasses. You can also sand the surfaces to smooth them out too. I could also gladly print off some for you guys, since you're doing such amazing work for animals
Zebra finches will lay eggs as long as they have access to water, as they lay eggs during rainy season. So in captivity, that means all year around. We used to have them, I worked at a pet store who sell them, and they constantly lay eggs in the food bowl.. Removed eggs all the time, so talk to a local pet store, and hear if they might have some eggs available there...
@@katarinawikholm5873 that's a dangerous suggestion. Finches are pets too not just egg factories and you need to be able to give them proper care. If you can, then yes, having you own finches sounds like a great idea
@@alisav8394 Folks raise mice and rats as feeders, so is there a particular reason people shouldn’t have finches on hand to generate food? (Ed even suggested it in the video.)
@@Tsjestity There was no suggestion of mistreating animals, but if mice can be used as baby factories, finches can be used as egg factories. Feeder mice aren’t pets, even if they CAN be-so I see no reason why you couldn’t humanely keep finches as a food supply if you can do it for mice. At least the finches are laying unfertilized eggs. 🤷🏼♀️
I saw the title and had to watch it. The eggs looks so awesome and cute. Space eggs eating snakes, nice Kim. Already doing the defense mechanism, so cute. They are so cute. It's so funny that they tried to do the defense mechanism while they are on top of each other. I'm still waiting for the day when Emily and Ed keep a sassy baby snake for breeding and just nickname them Sassy with how many sassy babies they have
My four year old son loves the snake hatching videos and I'm sorry to say his favorite part is when the babies nip at Emily's finger. He says ,"kss, ksss, it got her finger!". Keep them coming. Love your content .
there's a reptile store in Germany that sells egg-eating snakes, and they only sell adult snakes that can be fed with chicken eggs/quail eggs I think that's the way to go with egg eaters, but it does take more work to first raise them up and then sell them... anyways, they're adorable !!
I literally had a dream that i went to the zoo with my cousin and my uncle, and on the way out i picked up a snake egg, and right at the exit it 'hatched' in my hands and it was a completely white hognose snake! Ever since i have been obsessed 😍
Emily and Ed, will you make a 2022 breeding plans video this year? and are the snakes out-of brumation/ coming out of brumation? if not when do you think they will? LOVE what you do! How is the new Caiman lizard? Have You guys found a name for him yet?
if you are looking for something to seal the hides with i recommend KBS, its an epoxy type clear coat that is used on fishing lures like crankbaits and it works really well to seal something.
Have you guys ever thought of raising finches for their eggs? They aren't hard to take care of(at least compared to some of the reptiles you have) , mostly just noisy.
yeah if they bred egg eatters and sold locally at the shop itd make a lot of sense to sell eggs.. but maybe they dont feel like they could offer the finches enough space/time? i dont know how they do in captivity compaired to parrots ive been around
Really interesting episode! I was wondering what those little hatchlings would be able to eat, and then you showed those tiny finch eggs. Very cool little snakes! (The snake egg art is always a crowd pleaser.)
For the 3-D printed hides you could always coat them in resin and then the bacteria can’t get between the layers and they’re easier to clean but it is an added step
Emily mentioned that they weren't sure they were going to show footage of the first clutch, so it would be awesome to see a video full of clips that you guys can't fit into a video on its own but still want to share. I honestly think people would love that. Plus it opens up opportunity for some more shenanigans and lets viewers know a bit more about the employees!
Love the excitement from the egg laying videos. Also Kim if you see this, you did great! I wouldn't mind seeing more videos that include more of your employees if they are wanting to or up to it. They're part of the family now. I think it would just be rather cool.
Would love some Snake Discovery employee take-overs :D Have them lead out on a video (maybe of their fav reptile?) Kim did such a great job, and I love the way she talked to mama snake
I watched this video with my egg eater and we were excited to see the new babies! I also learned some things for when I get more snakes and start to breed in the future. I can't believe my snake used to be that small- so cute!
@@confuzedgraphite Yeah I think I remember, but this one was super moldy compared to others. Unless they had a fully rotten egg in worse shape than this one have a live baby come out?
@@Songal18 they did say egg eater snakes eggs are unique, so maybe the really moldy looking egg wasn't moldy it just how it looks to be less appetizing.
@@Songal18 if I was something that ate snake eggs. I would look at that let alone smell it and go nah and eat it's siblings since they looked better. Just because I would be unsure if that is a good egg or not.
Kim you did an amazing job. Emily and Ed are the best teachers ever. It is neat to see some of your alls employees in your videos. Keep up the awesome work Snake Discovery Team.
Hey...Just wanted to say, we got a hognose snake and have learned so much from you. (I am a kindergarten teacher, and it was shipped to my school. and I opened it in my class. SHSHSHS, I didn't tell the principal, but....ALL of my parents were so mad because all the kids went home and said, "WE should get a snake. they are so cute. My teacher calls them danger noodles.) I had to send all the parents pictures and short videos so they could see him. The parents were actually proud that their kiddos found the snakes as gentle creatures and not scary nightmares.
For a non-youtuber I think Kim did a great job and was brave to document it too! These sassy little babies are so cute, I hope they find amazing forever homes. Xx
As someone who does 3D printing for aquariums and chickens and other animals the trick is to seal them with a clear coat. Then no water is absorbed and no bacteria or mold. Happy baby snakes! Very cool!
This is a bit late, but for the 3D printed hides, I believe there's a way to let them sit in peroxide vapor that will melt them just enough to smooth them out. Might be worth looking into!
The last baby placed in the bin was my favorite, 🤣🤣 it was just like "Hooman holding me, this fine" compared to its siblings whom wanted to be vicious 🤣🤣🤣.
If you print your hides using ABS plastic, they will be more finicky to make, but you can fume them with acetone before you use them and get a glass smooth finish, which will make washing much easier and you don't need to apply epoxy!
For disinfectant, I highly recommend you look in to a product called Virkon! I love Iit for so many reasons. It comes as a powder or tablet that is mixed with water, you spray it on surfaces or soak things in it, it doesn't need to be rinsed, and you only need to keep most animals off it for 15 minutes. I'm assuming amphibians would be an exception, but I've never used it for anything but mammals. It's anti fungal, viral and bacterial. I use it to spray down the quarantine stalls in my horse barn, among other things, and it's been great because I can spray it straight on the wood and just leave it. It might solve the problem of the 3d printed caves.
Ophelia the egg eater. What an adorable name for a snake 🥰 ....that's so neat the make a hissing sound by rubbing their skin :) kinda reminds me of how some tarantulas "hiss" by rubbing their chelicerea together. Neat.
Bengal finches or society finches are honestly so underrated! They’re more commonly thought of as feeders rather than pets but they are awesome! I wish I still had mine because back when I had mine I didn’t know egg eating snakes existed and my girls laid infertile eggs all the time! I probably could’ve helped out lots of baby snake owners!
It amazes me that the little babies already have that instinct to coil around and rub their scales together to try to make that noise, as their species does.
When I saw the title I thought it was about that hognose (I think?) who ate a bunch of her eggs some years ago. I'd forgotten you also had actual egg-eating snakes
@@mybrainisbrokenithink6751 i may or may not have a severe problem... i constantly check my youtube notifications on tuesday/friday. 30 times a second it feels like! lol
YES! They really are cute! I have been waiting for their video to come out or an announcement that the clutch wasn't good. Fortunately, that did not happen! Congrats if someone here gets one of these! They are so cute but also they eat finch eggs as babies. I can't wait to see more baby egg eaters in the future! Yay for babies!!!!! Also I was expecting this to be the clutch from patreon that was revealed! Also the stars that sometimes happen on their eggs are soo cute. ⭐✴⭐
I love how snake discovery makes sure the homes their reptiles and pets are going to will be good homes, too often people just jump into a pet and sometimes willfully mistreat them just because they refuse to not believe what they were told before
I wonder if egg-eating snakes have those unique-feeling eggs so that they can differentiate between eggs of their species and eggs of other species to avoid team kills? Such an interesting species!
Thanks Kim for doing such a great job a filming for us!! I loved seeing it, that's something cool for when Ed and Emily are out of town or just too busy to film, the employees can do these kind of videos (if they feel comfortable doing so, and it can be done just like that, no faces, if they are more inclined to)
i am not in a place in my life where i can have pets or even pet snakes for various reasons, mostly due to time and space.. so to get my cuteness fix, this channel has been super helpful and has helped me through quarantine. first feeding of the noodles are my all time favorite cuteness overload
Kim Was Here hatched! That’s really cool. …do you have any idea why almost all of one clutch and all of the second molded? Is it to do with the environment they were laid in?
As Emily said in the video egg eaters live in very dry places and if I had to guess there was just too much humidity in the perlite which caused to the eggs to mold
When Emily says “egg-eating snake eggs!” It sound like she is saying “eggity snake eggs!” My mum was like “ I know a lot about snakes but eggity snake eggs don’t exist?”
I know you guys breed mice and rats for feeders, would you consider also having finches so that you could provide food for keepers in your area? Or would that be unfeasible with your space and time?
