Bachmann class 37 upgrade walk through - HOW TO!

Grab a cuppa as this is a long one!!
Ever thought to yourself, the lighting looks poor on my Bachmann models? I certainly have...
Well look no further as Richard from Garforth let me dive in head first and tear his lovely pair of 37s apart!
We change the speaker setup from a pair of iphone speakers to a iphone/EM1 combination for added bass
Install an aux amplifier to allow use of a Loksound V4s aux 3&4 for tail lamps
Change all of the LEDs for more realistic colours
Seperate the cab lights
And have it all mapped to be easy to use - with the use of my Lokprogrammer.

Thanks found it very useful. Just a couple of notes, for those wanting to yellow the high-intensity only (I know the video is doing something more detailed), to avoid prising off the nose end, a slip of kapton tape can be put down the crack between the board and the nose. Also when I jumpered pin 5 and 6 for the cab lights, I didn't notice that the pins next to them are the motor connections and I allowed them to get loose, perhaps better to solder them.

I can hardly wait to hear what you’ve done to that locomotive!! Very pretty locomotive and fitting the DCC Sound chip was very interesting. I shall have to chip up some steam locomotives before I return to my club.

The sound, before the upgrades, was pretty good but the change of speakers made a huge difference to the second 37 - fantastic sound, best I've heard on an OO scale 37.👍👌😁

Yes indeed! Its not quite as loud as the original but a much better range!

Hi Eric, fully agree with you the DRS class 37 has more depth to the sound. I am still DC but found this video very informative and interesting. Love the running shots with light and sound functions by Richard. Stay safe hopefully only a few more weeks of lockdown to go..

Been reading in various places this was possible and been trying to find a "How to" video for ages, thanks for putting this together. Not sure i'll be brave enough to attempt it myself though! Maybe the Accurascale 37 will be the way forward.

Hi Eric I have a Bachman 37/4 with bad driveshafts have got some new ones and fitted them thanks to your superb vidio. stupidly i forgot to photograph the PCB for the wiring positions. Any help you can give me would be wonderful. Thank You Regards Alan

Hi Eric, excellent video/tutorial, I would just like to ask how do you tell which is the positive terminal on the iPhone speaker as I have read that not only should they be wired in series but also in phase. Cheers.

Thanks! For twin iphones i have them one on top of the other the same way round, then you can bend one speakers terminals down onto the other to save on wiring and then a single wire from each side to the decoder. Polarity then shouldnt matter really

I can confirm, Eric, that the DRS locomotive sounds better than the BRA one.

Fantastic video Eric. Just curious why you didn't add any resistors between the lights and the decoder?

I retained the standard lighting PCBs just changed all the LEDs and seperated the negatives onto individual aux outputs, so there are already resistors on there 🙂

Amazing! The lighting is fantastic, I just wish the manufacturers would automatically do this! Can Eric do this upgrade with all loco, 66 and 47 for example? Cheers Lawrence

The ploughs are attached straight to the chassis if i remember

They are t0402 prewired SMDs from ebay that i buy. For this i just removed the wires to mount them direct

Hi Eric, ESU don't make them speakers. Depending on how many you want to order the Manufacturer is TangBang EM1 = T0-2008S EM2 = T1-1925S

I’m absolutely shocked that one has to wreck the front of a locomotive to change the front lights!! I think that it’s slightly older technology!! Am I right?

Annoyingly you cant get the screws out to remove the PCB without removing the front end. They are designed to come off but annoyingly have glue on from factory which makes it difficult
