Hi! I'm An Scott. I'm a happily retired 70 year old woman with my “golden years” on the horizon, living the “good life”, whatever that is on any given day, with my fun husband Jeff, and our “bossy” little Yorkie, Bella.
We have recently moved from the USA to the beautiful south of France and made our new home in Nice France.
Moving from the USA to a foreign country was no small “project”. Through my videos, we’ve been taking you through the Long Stay Visa process, the packing, the purging, the moving, searching for an apartment, creating a great Dossier, learning the way things are done administratively in France, and sharing the steps, talking about what we’ve learned and the ups and the downs.
And now, we continue to share our life, our new life, here in Nice, getting settled, adjusting to the “French” way of doing things, dealing with the French “red tape” and all the while, making every wonderful day in Nice, the best day ever…

An and Jeff, thank you for this video! I was looking forward to it, ha-ha! So delicious and fresh! I appreciate you checking the name of the market! I put a note for myself. My husband loves this stuff (fresh produces and prices) and was watching your video over my shoulder :)

The food market definitely looked interesting. Cornetto in Italian for the croissant. And the listing was definitely for land and a small rustic house.

It DID "Look" wonderful, however, we found that the fruit we buy here in Nice at the market in Old Nice, tastes even better.

@@anscott7964 I remember in one of your older videos when you were apartment hunting you mentioned not to tell the landlord about your pet. Just curious if the landlord ever found out?
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears Месяц назад
Yes, of course. We weren't advised to keep it off the application as some big "secret" or to be deceitful and "hide" the fact that we have a dog. We were simply told there is no reason to even mention we have a dog when looking at apartments or completing our application to rent an apartment and in fact to increase our chances of getting the apartment we should not to mention the dog in our application or cover letter. Rental laws in France prevent a landlord from denying a rental to you because you have a dog. We were simply told there is no reason to mention the dog up front. We were advised by our agent, in a very tight rental market, from their years of experience dealing with landlords and management companies, if multiple people apply for the same apartment, and one of them mentions they are bringing a dog and the other doesn't and all other things are equal, typically human nature, here in France, is that landlords will select the person who didn't mention a dog and pass on the one who did. They may use some other excuse for not renting to the person with the dog. They will never say they didn't choose the person because they have a dog. They could just say they didn't have a good feeling about renting to that person or give some other reason. In our case, our landlord owns and lives in the apartment across the hall from us, part time. So of course she has seen the dog, from day one. We have made no attempt to hide the dog nor was there ever a need to. There has never been any conversation about the dog. In fact, our lease had a statement in it that if we have a pet, we agree to keep the pet quiet, (from continual barking or noise) and clean, not smelling or we could be asked to remove the pet. We are the only people in our building with a dog and there are several older tenants in the building who have lived here for decades. So we try very hard to prevent our dog from incessant barking. She is very little and very cute and most people make a fuss over her when they see her.

Merci for the video. I will head there Friday. Took the ferry from Nice to St. Tropez yesterday. The ferry became packed at Cannes. It was a pleasant day and glad I finally visited but would not rush back. Overpriced as you can imagine--like Monaco. If you go avoid the restaurants at the port. At Biglari Cafe paid 18 Euros for a cappuccino and a small Perrier. I should know better than to go to a place at the port. Oh well, chalk it up.

We have been to St Tropez, in the past. We looked there when we were considering where to move Too expensive to live there. It IS very pricey there but a nice splurge for lunch or dinner. We hope to do the ferry one day this summer. Where did you pick it up?

@@postcardsfromourgoldenyears I got on the ferry in Nice at Quai Lunel. Trans Cote d'Azur is the line. 78 Euros r/t per person.

PS St. Tropez has a market on Saturday which ends ~1300 or so. The ferry gets in at 1130 am and the ferry leaves St. Tropez at 1630 with boarding at 1610. I found that to be plenty of time there. The ferry is basic but pleasant. A store owner there that I know stated the traffic can be murder if you drive. I am sure it depends on the time of day.

@@bibibachmd9995 I've driven there both from where I was staying at in St. Maxime, one summer, quite a few years ago, and again from SW France, actually on the way to Nice, a couple of years ago. Fortunately we were spending the night in St. Tropez so we didn't have to deal with the traffic twice in one day. The traffic in either direction moves very slow and there's really only 1 road. I think I would avoid driving at any cost. If there's a train, I might consider that, but the ferry sounds nicer. We will definitely head there one day... thanks again!

Hi, I think I have seen most of your videos, very interesting, but what I would like was for you to give us a tour of the apartment, the area and what the apartment would cost, living expenses etc. Best regards Carsten
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears Месяц назад
I'd like to do a tour of our apartment one day, too, however, we're still waiting for our 60 boxes of "stuff" to arrive from the US. It takes a long time to ship things in a container. They finally arrived in Rotterdam, but still have to be trucked to France. When we get our stuff and unpack and are ready to provide a tour, we're planning to do that. We will not be showing our immediate area, like right outside of our building, for our privacy. Most areas we visit in our videos, here in Nice, are within a 15 min walk or tram ride away. We live in the center of Nice where everything is. So if you're watching our videos, most of what we're showing you, here in Nice, IS our area. I don't know if I'll share our exact living expenses but we can certainly give a ballpark. We'll probably do all of this when we get the rest of our stuff, hang our pictures and our place looks like home instead of being in a temporary state. 🤩
@cabj24
@cabj24 Месяц назад
@@postcardsfromourgoldenyears Thank you so much for your extensive answer. I did not realize that you had not received all your boxes yet, but course by ship it takes a long time, so it's understandable that you do not want to show your place until it is a real home. I am looking forward to your tour of your apartment, and until then I wish you all the best in your life in France. Best regards, Carsten

An, the kg to pound is approximately 2.05 pounds to 1 kg. What that looks like ?. Thanks for bringing us along with you to the market. I believe the prices are slightly better in Italy on most items. Where is Bella? Home safe and sound 😊❤️

Fun day at the Mercado - I felt Iike I was shopping along with you, alas, have nothing to show for it😪. Couple of points: dealing with the vendors, after "buongiorno" why don't you speak French with them - they all understand it. As far as the foreign signs and writings - in the app Google Translate, there's a field called "lens", you just point the camera at the sign, take a picture and you get an English translation immediately! A bientot!
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears Месяц назад
I DID speak French with everyone I spoke with. That's how I know they all speak French--actually I did run into one person who spoke no French or English, only Italian. We did not record every conversation and often when I am speaking with someone and I'm the one filming, I don't think it's polite to continue shooting video in their face. So I stop shooting video. Perhaps that's why you didn't know that I was speaking to them. That's the only way to order food at the counters other than just pointing. And yes, we know about Google Translate. We're pretty tech savvy for two "old people". LOL. We've been using Google translate for years. We love the lens that translates. You don't even have to take a photo. If you hold it steady over the French words, it translates right before your eyes. I use it often to read ingredients on packages in the grocery store and on menu's if I'm stumped on what a word is.
@7314jazzy
@7314jazzy Месяц назад
Yes, I know you are tech savvy (just editing and posting videos would require that) but maybe my comment will help your readers. And you're not old! Lol Out of context question: you mentioned flying to Nice in business class with Bella. Which airline allows pets in business?
@anscott7964
@anscott7964 Месяц назад
@@7314jazzy Thanks for the clarification. 😉 No, we're not "that" old. LOL. We had to fly Lufthansa. Our favorite airline for coming from the US, Air France, stopped allowing any pets, even in carriers, in Business Class. With Lufthansa, it was no problem.
@7314jazzy
@7314jazzy Месяц назад
@anscott7964 That's too bad, we loved how AF treated our dog...Well, maybe I can still fly business and ban my hubby and the Havanese to the economy. Oh, all right, premium economy🤣
@anscott7964
@anscott7964 Месяц назад
@@7314jazzy LOL It will be a tight squeeze for hubby with a dog in a carrier in front of his legs for a 9 hour trip. We were disappointed that AF changed their policy. The ticket broker I used said "something happened" in business class with one person who brought a dog, and that forever changed their policy. I can't imagine what. Oh well...Lufthansa wasn't bad. It was actually quite nice. We were on the 2nd floor of the plane. They have 2 levels of business class. We were in the first row. Rarely saw any people other than flight attendants. But the steps up with a carry on bag and a dog in a carrier and a purse were a bit tough. LOL
