Hi! I'm An Scott. I'm a happily retired woman in my late 60's, with my “golden years” on
the horizon, living the “good life”, with my fun husband Jeff, and our “bossy” little Yorkie, Bella.
I created this channel for like-minded “middle-agers” and (reluctant-refusing to accept that we're really that old) "seniors" on the path to or already embracing their “Golden Years”. On this channel, a “lifestyle” channel, I’ll share videos about travel, dining out, health tips, beauty, sexuality in our “mature” years, and all of the issues that affect us as we age and try to stay beautiful, sexy, energetic and vital…in our golden years.
Early in 2024, when my husband retires we plan to move from the USA to Nice France and live out our “golden years” on the sunny Mediterranean coast of southern France. Moving from the USA to a foreign country is no small “project”. Subscribe to my channel and as we progress through the steps of doing that, you’ll be able to follow along through each stages of our preparation and then catch up with us, as we settle in to our new life.
For now, come with us as we embrace our days and nights living everyday as though there is no tomorrow.
I hope you’ll subscribe to my channel, join our Facebook community connect with me on social media and share your thoughts and comments here or there. If there are any topics you’d like to see us share or “visit” with you, please be sure to let me know! NOTHING IS OFF LIMITS! I’m happy to talk about all of those things us “older” women think about but rarely say out loud. So feel free to send me suggestions in the comments, always.

It's the same in most of Europe, including Switzerland, Germany, etc. For an unfurnished apartment, you are expected to bring your own kitchen and bathroom, so most tenants would shop in IKEA first for the cabinets and then the electrical appliances, before the unfurnished apartment is liveable.
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears 9 месяцев назад
Yes, that's what we've learned about the kitchens. I kinda like it better not being included. We can pick out the appliances we prefer. Although, everything I've read about the France rental laws, as recently as last month, states that a bathroom must be included in an unfurnished rental. I've never seen anything saying that a landlord doesn't need to provide a bathroom.

Really enjoy the channel and your detailed coverage of topics relevant to a move to France. Including details like links, abbreviations, terms etc is a nice touch. I subscribed and like every video. I don't recall seeing a video about getting a French bank account especially prior to the big move.

Glad my videos are helpful to you. I discussed our steps to getting a France bank account in a prior video. Since we have been doing it from the US it has taken a little longer. It will be finalized (finally) at the end of the month when we meet with our rep at the bank branch in Nice, in a few weeks. Here's a link to the video where I discussed the steps we had to follow-- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZKe-g73sJPo.html Thanks for you nice comments, as usual. 😊

Yay! You answered so many of my questions in a clear, concise and understandable way. You are so relatable especially to those of us who are not wealthy and may not be able to afford some of the suggested apartment/restaurants recommend to us us by other travelers. I never knew that you could place your medicare on hold! Thanks

YES! I recently learned that from some other expats who just move to France from the US. I think they had to go to the office in person and request "pausing" the deductions. They told the person at SS that they were going to be living in France for an indeterminate amount of time. So the deductions stopped and if they ever return they can "turn them back on again"! Thanks for watching! I hope if you haven't already done so, you'll subscribe. All my best, An

@postcardsfromourgoldenyears

@yannip2083 it is pausing part B. We won't have part D anyway since that is included in our Medicare supplemental plan, which we don't pay for now and will just cancel the month we leave the US.

Great! Yes, I was surprised to learn that the Rental Laws favor "the elderly" (I hate calling us that! LOL). Their laws favor tenants in general but there are additional protections for those of us over 65. I had already shot a lot of the video and was going to include it in THIS video, but this video got to be too long. So I'll do it as a separate video. That video will probably be coming out next Sunday. 🤩

Hi. Just found you today and watched 2 videos, subscribed and liked. 😊 Really helpful information TY. We are thinking of staying in France from May to October to get our feet wet and see if France is for us. We want to compare nice and Paris. Looking forward to your next postings.🎉

Welcome! and thanks for watching! We love Paris. Unfortunately, it is just so expensive to live there comfortably. We can get a lot more apartment for the money in Nice. And our compromise is that Paris is always just a TGV train away. We can go any weekend to enjoy my favorite city in the world. Good luck to you in your search and journey. xo

You present the information so well. You answered so many of our questions so clearly and concisely. I really appreciate all the time and effort that you put into it. You provide us with a wealth of information about moving to France. Just one small suggestion that I would like to make: if you would please lower the volume of the music when you post something in writing on the videos. The information is fantastic but the sound goes up so high and it is kind of disturbing. Sorry, I don’t mean to be unpleasant. It’s just my suggestion. Thank you for everything that you do for us.

Also, not all buildings have the plumbing and electrical systems built into the walls to accommodate major appliances. Even if you buy your own appliances, you need to make sure the building itself has the hook-ups necessary.
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears 11 месяцев назад
Great point, Linda. I hadn't included that and I should have. I think I assumed if they were renting an apartment, with a space for a kitchen that there was sufficient electric and the plumbing needed for the sink and dishwasher. Thanks so much for adding that. I will have to make sure WE confirm that if we find an unfurnished place without a kitchen.

An: many thanks for putting your invaluable information out here for those of us who, like you, plan to retire in France. Wondering whether you utilized a tax accountant to evaluate what your tax liability would be after moving to France? If so, can you recommend them? I have seen a number of your videos and though you might have mentioned this, I may have missed it. Again, thank you for all the leg work you have saved us!
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears 10 месяцев назад
Hi, we have not contacted any accountant. As a matter of fact, my next video, coming out NEXT Sunday, will be on the tax treaty between the US and France. The short answer is that we'll file a US tax return in 2024 and another for income my husband earns until his retirement in 2024. We will have to file US tax returns AND France tax returns reporting all of our income. France wants you to report worldwide income. The US only seems to care about what you earn in the US. We don't have a house to sell, so we'll just have money in our savings account and IRA's (and some stock). And then we'll just be living on our Social Security monthly income. We haven't decided if we'll close out our retirement accounts (that income may be subject to US taxes if the pending proposed law doesn't pass, here in the US, preventing us from double taxation (the withdrawal of money we had already paid taxes on, before depositing into the account). We will have to file a tax return in France and one in the US and the tax treaty between the two countries will prevent us from being taxed 2x on the same income. And we won't be working. So once we have no other income except our Social Security money, we won't be required to file US returns anymore. We'll be required to file France returns ,regardless, annually, but they don't tax Social Security so we won't ever have any taxes due. More to come in my next video, which I am still working on. I do suggest if you have a lot of complicated things like business expenses and sale of property, you look for an accountant familiar with the US/France tax treaties, who can assist you. And maybe you'll need to wait to find that person until you're living in France?? Thanks so much for watching my video. If you can think of any other topics that would be helpful, feel free to make suggestions! .

She's a busy lady. Our zoom consult with Adrian is the week before Thanksgiving. We're heading to France on Thanksgiving, starting in Paris for a few days and then headed to Nice, hoping to look at some apartments, if not for the long term, for at least the first 90 days, when we arrive in April, so we'll at least have our Long Stay visa requirements covered (and a little peace of mind). 😊

Thanks An, for your quick response!! My husband is in the process of scheduling an appointment to speak with an international tax expert. We have also read that the French government does not tax U.S. Social Security, but that the U.S. does tax Social Security and therefore, we must file both a French tax return and a U.S. tax return if we receive Social Security from the U.S. It is our understanding that under the tax treaty between the U.S. and France, taxes on Social Security are paid to the county of origin ... the country that pays out Social Security to the individual (Article 18 of the 1994 U.S./France Tax Treaty found at IRS.GOV). This may be old information, so, I would not take it as gospel. I look forward to your next video!
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears

The information is basically what I determined EXCEPT, from my research, I determined that if we have $0 income, no interest or dividends, $0 earned income. And all we have is Social Security, coming in, we no longer have to file tax returns and the Social Security is NOT taxable. It only becomes taxable if you have earned income. I haven't found anything that says social security is taxable if you have no other income, earned.
@Francebound2024
@Francebound2024 9 месяцев назад
That’s correct. Passive income like SS, pensions, retirement, dividends, interest are only taxed by the US, but declared to France.

I only know a few french words and my husband knows none. How difficult is it to learn? ALso, what expat FB group do you belong to get good information. I'll be honest, I studied French back in my school days for over 8 years hoping to have a career as a translator for the UN. Life took me in another direction. Back when I was a teenager studying, it was easy to learn. But at our age now, 70, it would be hard, but not impossible, for sure. A lot of people use Lingoda online. My husband who only speaks about 20 words in French, bought Babbel. But he has been too busy with his job to really take the time to concentrate on learning. He will use Babbel once we move and settle in. I also take a group class on Zoom to advance my skills, from a popular French teacher in the UK. I believe she may offer 1 on 1 classes for beginners as well. She is quite fun. I do recommend doing something. You really need to be able to speak a fair amount of French to live in France and fit in with the French people. It is after all the language of their country. Yes , technically a lot of people do speak English there but it would be the equivalent of a lot of hispanic people always talking to you in Spanish here in the US and you know Spanish but you're always wondering why, if they want to live in the US don't they learn the language. I also think if you move to France and immerse yourself in the French culture you'll start to pick up some phrases that you hear over and over.

I really appreciate your videos! My husby and I (both 65) along with our golden retriever are making our move in September 2024! The 1st year, we’re going to Airbnb it, because unlike you and your husband, we aren’t 100% sure what region we want to live in! We’ll stay 3 month in 4 regions, or 4 months in 3 (haven’t decided). Then we too will rent. Question: how did you decide on Nice. I must have missed that video. Thanks!

Glad to hear you like my videos. We decided on Nice after making a list of our "must haves" (walkable-no car needed, within budget, warmer climate, near international airport and major train station, etc) and then spent 3 weeks traveling to a number of places between Paris and Nice. When we arrived in Nice, it ticked all of our boxes. I did cover it last year, or maybe it was the year before, in a video, when we were traveling around looking for our "new retirement destination". I'll be doing a Q & A video going into this in more detail, with lots of other questions answered, next Sunday the 5th of Nov. So be sure to watch for that video. 😉

Thank you that was very informative. I am also 62 and planning to move to Paris in a year or two. I know a bit about the benefits older people get but I'm afraid that it might deter homeowners from renting to older folks like us. Even with Guarantme. What are your thoughts? Thanks again.
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears
@postcardsfromourgoldenyears 11 месяцев назад
First, I'm sure there are thousands of us seniors retiring to France in the near future. I disagree that homeowners would be afraid to rent to us older folks. There are discrimination laws in France. They can't refuse to rent to you because of your age, legally, just like in the US. They want to be sure that you can cover the rent for the entire term of the lease. That's pretty much the most important thing they care about. My husband and I will both be 70 years old by the time we move next April. We're going to use AdrianLeeds Group to assist us, mostly because of her contacts, expertise with expats and knowledge . Adrian and her staff have helped thousands of seniors find new homes in France and they have a lot of landlords/management companies they deal with regularly. And if you're going to do it on your own, or through another realtor in Paris, they will review your qualifications/dossier and be able to tell you if you're going to need a guarantor. I've seen some rental ads over the last months, now that I'm already starting to search ahead for us. I saw a few in the university areas, where most rentals are presumably to students and for sure they want either a guarantor and having Garantme gives you a step up. But we're talking about students who won't be working and have to prove their apartments will be paid for. Personally, we don't believe we will need a guarantor because of our income (and we're just going to be living on our combined Social Security, from the US) and the fact that we're capable of paying for an entire year's rent in advance if there is any concern. I think you'll need to wade in the water, go there, talk with some realtors , even set up an appointment with someone at Adrian Leeds office and let them see what they think will put you in the most favorable position to get a rental. Some realtors, including Adrian's group, will do zoom meetings with you online so you don't have to fly over in person.
