Excellent Randy. Had a real problem with you knocking the Ruger 77/50 muzzle loader several years ago. Big Problem. However on your shotgun reviews. I feel I’ve learned something, and who can beat a nice spread, with plenty of grassland. Even the creek too. I agree wholeheartedly with your shotgun reviews. Thank you

Have you tried any Patternmaster choke tubes? The factory IC choke pattern seemed to be as long as it was wide at 45 yards. Shooting cripples on the water makes it easy to see shot strings at impact. 45 yards is a lot to ask from an IC, but you gotta kills the cripples. The Patternmaster's short shot string allows me to put down wood duck cripples with one shot most of the time at 45-50 yards.

Shot string doesn't matter. Ed Lowry long ago proved it: www.randywakeman.com/lowryshotstring.pdf . The highest percentage loss to pattern at 65 yards is only 4.1%.

Lowry's study was limited by the technology of 1979. It only uses one method for collecting data on a moving target, a piece of paper. Data collection, analysis, and external shotgun ballistics have come a long way it the past 4 decades. The study focuses on where the pellets are in flight, and collects no data from where the pellets landed. This experiment is limited to data collected from the Z and Y axis, ignoring X. Data was only collected using a passing target paper target limited to the Z and Y axis. It is hard to tell the difference on crossing shots, but the effectiveness of a short shot string on ground targets is undeniable. If 2 patterns have the same width and height, then the pellets will land closer together in the pattern with the shortest shot string.

Hardly. One of Lowry's first projects was reconstructing entire shot strings. The whole point is pattern thinning at range vs. crossing targets, the worst scenario. Shot moves far faster than the targets we shoot at, which moots the entire discussion. Shooting at water tells you nothing about patterns or shot string, and the notion that shot string means anything against cripples on the water is completely bogus. It is a completely settled matter: slow motion photography proves Burrard was right as was Lowry. Simple wind drafting allows Full chokes to have much shorter shot strings down range than open chokes. www.randywakeman.com/ShotshelPelletBehavior.htm

@@RandyWakeman You are correct. There is no denying shot strings exist in various lengths. What is important or irrelevant to a large degree is how long it takes that shot string to completely pass by the target. How far does that target moves during the passing of that shot string (movement will be the greatest at a 90 degree angle to the gun). And,what is the speed of the target,the speed of the shot as it intersects the target,and the amount of time it takes for the shot string to completely pass by the target. The length of the shot string is difficult to know without expensive equipment, and of course is governed by a number of variables I.e. shot size, velocity,distance to the target,climatic conditions, quality/type of choke being used etc. The shorter the shot string the better of course,and the farther away the target is the longer the shot string will be. For most targets being shot at normal distances the target will not move enough to evade a well centered and evenly dispersed shot pattern.

What are your thoughts on barrel porting? I know some manufacturers swear by it and others say it's a waste of time. I own some shotguns that are ported and some that aren't and personally can feel or see no difference in performance. Just more plastic wad residue in the barrel when I clean the ported guns,

It does nothing significant other tthan making your gun uglier and more annoying.

I owned two browning golds both had the invector plus system . Both absolutely sucked. You could get at best improved cyl performance out of the stock fulls all other were completely useless and I have never purchased a browning product since and never will. I honestly believe they have Peta members developing and building thier shotguns.and over charging people grossly on top of that.

@@RandyWakeman you are right but I feel like there is no way they should continue to make a product that's completely useless like that.

I owned a Pet Rock, which was also useless. Since it was guaranteed to be useless, I had nothing to complain about.

Wow! Its amazing the difference the Trulock choke makes. Are the Browning Invector DS chokes really that bad? Im pretty shocked. Have you tried different ammunition Randy? Or an average of 5 shotshells per choke, maybe it was a bad round lol?

Randy Wakeman So do recommend replacing the factory Browning DS chokes to aftermarket extended chokes? Which brand of chokes do you recommend? All of the guy around here speak as if Briley IS The Brand!! Please help as I just purchased a Browning 727 Pro Sporting and haven’t shot it yet.

@@nmhvactech5474 based on his test, it seems that he preferred Trulock, I wonder where DS chokes are made at?
@RandyWakeman
@RandyWakeman 5 лет назад
I've tested Briley as well: www.randywakeman.com/BrileyTakesontheBrowningDSChokeSystem.htm . Trulock is generally the best, your money back if not satisfied, but regardless you still have to pattern your gun with your ammo.

I hate to say it as I'm a Browning fan, but their choke tubes literally SUCK. You need to plan for a Briley purchase with each shotgun you buy from Browning
