Back to the Future - comparing the last scene in Part I with the first scene in Part II

Marty McFly's girlfriend Jennifer Parker was played in Part I by actress Claudia Wells, and by Elisabeth Shue in Parts II and III. This required them to reshoot the last scene from Part I, which was then shown at the beginning of Part II. Here these scenes are compared side-by-side.

Elizabeth's hair started blowing immediately when the DeLorean pops up 😂 Michael's hair is also noticeably different, but overall pretty damn impressive. It's a real shame they couldn't get the original actress, I thought they were a better match-up although I loved Shue's "figure self" thought she did a great job with the campy humor, considering she was coming to the series brand new.
@sterow
@sterow 2 года назад
Shue is noticeably broader than Wells in this scene - eg the look she gives Doc is much more extreme than Wells' mild befuddlement - however I think that's very much a reflection on the film. BTTF 2 is a bit cartoonier than the original.

@@philfitnesspt6139there are darker aspects, but there's a lot of campy acting. For example the I'm old I'm young line from Shue, the crazy face she makes before she passes out is very campy. The fact that Michael j fox plays his daughter and his son and pretty much all of those scenes are really goofy. Griff and his side kicks are very campy. There are definitely dark aspects of the story, but the future stuff is very very campy. It's a nice mixture of both

Seriously? In this scene Shue reacts so well to hearing about Marty and her's kids and her reaction made a lot of sense. Wells barely reacts and doesn't react realistically at all. Also Shue is so funny in in the scene where she appears in Marty's future house. She does It so well. I'm sure, Wells would've done fine in that scene and in all the other scenes as well but I wouldn't say the movie would've been better if Wells was in it instead

In this scene, I prefer Claudia's acting. With all this world shattering babbling and gesticulations from Doc Brown and Marty, she has an appropriate reaction : looking in awe, open mouthed, anchored to her love interest. Elisabeth has a more cartoonish acting IMO, staring in every direction like a Tex Avery character. Claudia is also 19 in 1985, so a genuine teenager, while Elisabeth is 26 in 1989. Having late 20's adults impersonating teenagers was a very common feature back then, but it really shows when comparing the 2 versions of this scene.

I've watched this video on my desktop computer with the video zoomed in really close. I can see differences between Back To The Future Part I and Back To The Future Part II. Back To The Future Part I you can see it's a nice sunny cooler day with some wind blowing since you can see Claudia Wells and Michael J. Fox hair blowing through the wind. If you look at the two windows you can see it looks like decorations are hanging up. Back To The Future Part II you can see it's an even nicer clear sunny day with no wind blowing since you can't see Elisabeth Shue and Michael J. Fox hair blowing through the wind. If you look at the two windows you can see there are no decorations hanging up in the two windows. Claudia Wells and Elisabeth Shue are two beautiful women. They both played Jennifer Parker in their own beautiful way and did a great job. I never realized how much they both looked so much alike in these movies until you compare them. They need to do a reunion with both Claudia Wells and Elisabeth Shue since they both played Jennifer Parker.

One of the key differences is Doc's delivery of the line "no both you and Jennifer turn out fine..." In Part One, he delivers it quickly. In Part Two, there's this momentary hesitation as if he has to think about it. Since in the original, a sequel wasn't planned, the ending was meant to be a joke. When the sequel was written and Marty's future required fixing as well, Doc had to think about how much to tell him. It's very subtle, but the delivery of the line is important.

Here’s my little theory about Jennifer’s change in appearance between movie 1 and 2 with continuity. So in the telltale game, Marty inadvertently messes with Officer Parker (Jen’s Grandfather) from arresting Kid Tannen’s goons in a shooting car chase and later reveals he was again inadvertently responsible for splitting Danny Parker with his love Betty. Later on when Marty is launched into the alternate 1986 with Citizen Brown and all that, Jennifer is reverted back to the Claudia Wells version of the character in this given universe, and lacks some characteristics of the version we had from Part 2 and 3. This could imply that sometime after the arrest of Kid that Danny and Betty reconciled and got married which inevitably leads to Jen, but in the Citizen Brown series of events that brought on a more strict upbringing. I like to think that because Marty changed history with Jen’s Grandma Betty in the main timeline of BTTF that when the timeline overcorrects itself from the events of 1885, 1931, 1955, and 1985 (i.e. BTTF 1) it changed Jen’s appearance and personality just a bit and synced up with whoever her Grandpa married in the past. So the original ending for BTTF 1 would be the alternate version of the timeline with no alternative ending in 1931, and the BTTF 2 intro would be the MAIN timeline with all the altered course corrections and events in tact within the time stream from anything prior to 1986. Basically Jen’s appearance from the beginning of BTTF 1 is with the Grandma Betty continuity and then by the end the time stream corrected itself and now we have the alternate continuity.

@@Farbar1955 but here’s this. Biff’s jacket color changed due to the events of Part 3 from green to red. And in the TellTale game his personality was slowly reverted to his Part 1 and 2 personality but softer around George, but by the end of the game is fully submissive to George, Marty, and his own parents. So little changes like hair, minor facial changes, and outfit changes would probably fly right under Marty’s nose as he just accepts it as the new status quo.

a theory I thought of the other day to “justify” this difference between the two scenes within the history of the films (I say this because almost everyone knows that the scene had to be re-recorded due to the fact that the actress who played Jennifer in the first film had to abandon the character to take care of her cancer-stricken mother): perhaps the timeline at the end of the first film had not yet completely changed, which would have temporarily maintained Jennifer's old appearance and caused Marty confusion due to the changes in his family's history , but after the Doctor took them both to the future, the new timeline may have finally taken the place of the original timeline, which I imagine may have even altered Marty's memories to the point where he recognizes Jennifer even when she appears with a different face, and perhaps this means that he received the memories of what he experienced in the new timeline as the protagonist of the film The Butterfly Effect, but in a much slower way (remembering that this is just my theory, right?) .

I find it funny that when Marty in the second movie asked Doc if him and Jennifer were gonna be assholes in the future, Doc had that one look that said, "did you? I dont remember" and then he said no while it the orignal he didn't hesitate by saying no. That's kinda funny tbh similar to how in the end of 2 and the beginning of 3, when Marty tried to convince young Doc that he came from the future which resulted in Doc fainting and Doc felt more scared and puzzled in 2 while in 3, he looked slightly more annoying by saying "what, what" right before he screamed.

It bugs me that they re-shot the Jennifer-less parts of the scene, where it's just Marty. They did that with the part where Marty's parents are in the window.

Claudia acted like someone who knew Doc and Marty, and was used to their crazy shenanigans, so nothing they did really surprised her. Elizabeth acted like someone who had seen Back to the Future Pt. 1.

In BTF 2 they neglected a lot of details, such like Jennifer's hair, is quite different in both actresses, when Doc goes out from the Delorean you can see a Red truck in the background that doesn't appears in BFT1. The shots with Marty and Jennifer have not the same angle position with the Delorean behind them.

I remember the original didn't have the to be continued at the end...i also remember hearing part 3 was being filmed before part 2
@klopferator
@klopferator 2 года назад
The first is true, the second isn't. Bob Zemeckis has said that editing of part 2 suffered because he had to do it while shooting part 3, constantly travelling between the location of the wild west Hill Valley set and the editing suite at the studio in LA. (It's perfectly plausible though that they filmed Marty coming back to his house after returning from 1885 at the same time they remade the end of part 1 because they had the location.)

I'm in the Elisabeth Shue camp. I thought she was clearly better. Her reactions still crack me up. I actually wish she had been in the first one for the few minutes that Jennifer appears. I feel that the original actress wouldn't have been as good in the more Jennifer heavy part II. Claudia just didn't strike me as more than run of the mill even then. Yeah she was pretty, but I honestly feel it would have dragged part II down even more and there was already enough drama with other cast members. Elisabeth was great and proved it. She went on to have a great career, and later in her career she was even nominated for an Academy Award, back when it still meant something. Claudia . . . is doing ok.

To be frank, I think Elisabeth did a little bit in the second movie. Then Claudia did anything much in the first movie. I didn’t really care that they recast Jennifer original actress Claudia, as she didn’t really play a big role in the first movie anyway. Would’ve been good if they got the actress, but didn’t mind they replaced Jennifer’s original actress. Like I said, she didn’t really play the big role in the first movie anyway. So was in a big deal that she was played by a different actress.

I think it was easier for Claudia wells here is why, Claudia was the original character having done only 1 she created the character. But Elizabeth had to play both Claudia wells ending scene and the character so it’s was twice the hardest. So it was easier for wells to act the original character. Does that make sense?.
