Official Institute (OI) hosted the February meeting on a special night this month, Monday, February 5, 2024, led by Chairman of the Board, Joshua Schroeder. We discussed several plays that involved backcourt violations or more lovingly known as over and back.
OI conducts these monthly meetings with intent of providing instruction for all basketball officials, at every skill level, so we can all get better, together. OI believes watching and discussing videos in a group, helps bring awareness to the rules of basketball by providing a platform for attendees to receive instant feedback from fellow officials. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by giving repetitive looks at the same play increases retention of rules and philosophies of rules. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos.
This online meeting includes 11 different video clips, all about backcourt violations AND at the end, a bonus clip containing a TRIPLE WHISTLE.
0:00 - Intro
0:15 - Dribbling player comes over and then back on the division line with no whistle by the official. Why?
8:09 - Another player dribbles over the division with both feet in the front court and then back into the backcourt and another no call by the officials.
9:36 - This backcourt was called by the official but look closely. Maybe an illegal screen caused it.
18:54 - Jump ball and the very first play is a backcourt violation. Be Ready.
26:23 - Ball was tipped into the backcourt and Trail had nothing. Center came up and made the violation call. Is this acceptable?
32:17 - When is a player or ball considered in the backcourt? What is the status of a ball or players location?
42:42 - Another close play. Did the player possess the ball while touching the front court or were they airborne?
46:00 - Frontcourt and backcourt status can be tough to determine in plays like this.
49:54 - Don't officiate on how a play looks normally. Know what you are calling based on what you actually see.
52:02 - Throw in that is tipped into the backcourt. Can this player retrieve it without violating?
58:05 - Backcourt violation called. The player stepped on the line but did they cause the ball to have backcourt status?
1:04:00 - BONUS CLIP - TRIPLE WHISTLE
1:09:02 - Meeting Schedule for the next meeting.
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.
