I prefer the photo at 5.57, so dramatic, Love it !

You may need to twist the flash so the receiver isn'tt bloked by the subject. Hold the mode button for 5 seconds and it should allow you to change the mode when in slave.

There are exceptions but usually your camera over rides your flash so if you choose 1/2 power in camera that's what the flash produces.

Fantastic video! Nice to see a great image that can be taken really easily. I have a Canon 60d and a 550ex speedlite, I have tried to use my speedlite wirelessly to back light, but firstly when it is behind the subject, it doesn't seem to fire (like the subject is getting in the way) and secondly my speedlite reverts back to E-TTL mode rather than Manual when I use it wirelessly. Do you have any tips or suggestions?

hi gavin i have been following all your tutorials and they have awesome. just wanted a piece of advise on using a green colored cloth as background. not getting good results

The model is pretty.

It's set via the camera menu to only talk to the main light and not add to the exposure.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. In this video I focused more on the shooting ;-)

Just a thought, if you used 2nd curtain flash sync, the flour wouldn't appear as raining upwards (as some bigger chuncks of it seem to be doing). Good video

In this case it would need a lot of light to match the flash but you could replace the flash with a super bright ambiant light.

i have 2 strobe lights with softboxes with a green background but not getting good results. should i buy another light? should i buy another background? if yes for background then what is the ideal color to buy?

Another good one from Gavin. Keep them coming. Does Adorama cover any like this for Nikon shooters as I believe there is a difference in operation between Canon flashes and Nikon flashes re changing background/ambient exposure when in manual.

Please do a video comparing Nikon and Canon cameras I would like to know which one you'd prefer :) I own a very basic Nikon and I'm not quite sure it was the right choice.

two questions: When using flash as slave. If my power is set in-camera for this flash to 1/2 , and on the flash set to 1/4, will it combines the two ratios and give a 1/2 x 1/4 (1/8) or if it will use only the in-camera value, or only the setting on the flash ? And where can I find tips on what lighting Equipment is best to buy on a budget (already have flash, but no strobes backgrounds and reflectors) Which to choose umbrellas/softboxes . . . What size is the black background? I love the easy set-up.

I could have done that but then the DOF would have been reduced and the flour background might have blurred and lost its impact.

How do you make the pop-up flash trigger the back speed light only and not blast harsh light onto the front of the subject?

It's held on a boom arm by two studio clamps.

I got mine from Smick (search on Google) a few years back. Off white isn't a problem if you know how to light it ;-)

May I know why you didn't just simply open up the aperture before you dialed the speed lite to full power?

I actually meant the strobe behind, the on-camera flash and the reflector not to mention your video lights and the room light(s) :) I understand now that by one light you meant only one for backlit

The title says "one light" but you're actually using 3 so a bit confusing :)
