The "strange rock formation" was started by somebody from the Bay area back around 2018. Over the years others have expanded the rock pattern to form what we have today. Your first camping spot is favored by hunters. There is a flat area just before the climb up the trail at 9:36 into this video. There was an old homestead near the creek in that flat area. An old "junk pile" can still be seen near the creek with mostly old cans. I once came across a bear and her cubs at that spot. The Boy Scouts use the campsite you used for the 2nd night.
