Backpacking the TONTO Trail | Hermit - Granite Rapids - Indian Garden - Bright Angel Trail
So I had the privilege to do an epic hike with a guy that I really look up to. @JerryArizona has a pretty epic list of adventures and is one of the best storytellers I've come across in this RU-vid World. Over the years I have watched his adventures and his editing techniques and they began inspiring me to do even better. I truly appreciate the time he has taken over the years to answer my many questions about editing and creating...any improvement I have made in my own videos should be credited to this guy!

• 3 Days Backpacking in ...
Day 1
So we began this 3 day Grand Canyon backpacking adventure by taking the shuttle to the Hermit's Rest Trailhead. We hiked down the Hermit Trail all the way to Monument Creek, from there we made the last descent to the Colorado River at the Granite Rapids Campground.
Day 2
We hiked from Granite Rapids back up to Monument Creek to join back on the Tonto Trail. From there we went made the long trek on the upper canyon over to Indian Garden Campground. After setting up camp we went down to check out the amazing views at Plateau Point.
Day 3
We woke up early to climb up the Bright Angel Trail. As we made it closer to the top it began to dump snow on us...It was truly an amazing climb.

they printed the same "aggressive itinerary" on our permit too. Like the rangers were calling us badasses. Felt pretty good. We planned a R2R2R in three days. Totally doable for most hikers (seasonal conditions may vary).
@TheNotLostNomad
@TheNotLostNomad 9 месяцев назад
Haha, yeah we kept quoting our permit every time the hike got challenging. I guess it’s good to second guess your plans before heading out. I’m sure they’ve dealt with so many who bit off more than they could chew.

I did that trail many years ago- down to Horseshoe Mesa, Tonto Trail to Indian Garden, back up Bright Angel. We spent 5 days 4 nights. I was with 2 younger guys who were tough and I was dragging. I'm sure hiking with Jerry is like that. I remember those side canyons where you have to hike all the way up to the beginning of the canyon, cross over and then all the way back out. This was back in the days before Instagram, the trails weren't crowded, it wasn't impossible to get permits. In the summer that trail is very hot. The rangers really didn't like our itinerary either and gave us a permit under protest. From the rim you can see the trail out to Plateau Point. I wondered why there were no people on the trail, then I looked at the trail through a telescope and there were lots of people on the trail but it is so far away you can't see them, the trail itself was like 10' wide in places.

Cool trip man. I always think it's funny when people talk about Palo Duro being the second largest Canyon in the US behind the Grand Canyon. It may be. But the Grand Canyon is on a whole other level. The size of that thing is insane.

Holy crap, that intro is off the charts. I need to find a proper 30 minutes to watch this, I can tell it’s going to be good from just the first few seconds. I refuse to watch it until I have a good chance to sit and pay proper attention. This quality deserves that 🙂

@@TheNotLostNomad Sounds like a plan! Lots of good areas out here to explore :) So many thoughts to put down here. Here is what I can remember in more or less chronological order: 1) Intro montage: awesome and well done, set a great tone for the rest of the adventure. 2) That feeling of a storm rolling in while racing to safety. Been there enough times to know it’s awesome to talk about it afterwards haha, not so awesome when the storm catches you in a bad spot. Totally sympathized with y’all during those parts. 3) View from the plateau - frickin’ amazing. 4) The music and look on y’all’s faces when it started snowing: epic 5) Outro montage: amazing recap and music to match. 6) Ending blooper reel and “how do you like the Grand Canyon” part had me laughing out loud. Great stuff dude, I need to go to the Grand Canyon for a proper trip! Impressive work, I really enjoyed this video :)

2 nights why are packs so big?
@TheNotLostNomad
@TheNotLostNomad 3 месяца назад
I’m not really into the whole ultralight thing…we like to take some comfort items. Typically I’ll bring my chair, 30” wide sleeping pad (I’m a big guy), and extra camera equipment. Also we try to eat well…I’m 6’1” and 225 lbs and I need the calories. I could go lighter but my pack is super comfortable and it doesn’t slow me down. Also my pack size really doesn’t get affected by the number of nights…food would be the largest variable. I do carry a large amount of water though. I always go into a hike carrying 3 liters…and I drink it freely. I never ration water unless it’s absolutely necessary.
@TRUUTAH60559
@TRUUTAH60559 3 месяца назад
I’m not into ultra light thing at all, but for two days that seems huge. How much do you think your pack weighed that trip? I’m just curious. I’ve gone light and gone heavy as well, I did tanner trail with 55lbs, and just did new hance with 45lbs. After new hance i think I’m going back to lighter. Body will be grateful. And pack chairs so unnecessary lol, especially for hermit rapids and Indian garden. Connect with with the earth and sit on ground.
@TRUUTAH60559
@TRUUTAH60559 3 месяца назад
Oh and the pack weight has nothing to do with speed for me, to save my body. When I did new hance last week messed my feet up so bad I’m going to lose 4 toenails. I’ve hiked in the same shoes since 2017 and never had a blister or any foot issue, so wondering if new Hance is just that much of a ass kicker or was my pack too heavy
@TheNotLostNomad
@TheNotLostNomad 3 месяца назад
Maybe it just looks big…I usually average 45lbs…although we just recently did Thunder River/deer creek and was closer to 55 from the added water. I used to battle with blisters and losing toenails for years until I switched to the Altra Lone Peaks…I just had a 17 mile day in Big Bend last week. I also ditched the trekking poles a few years ago and never looked back. I now hike slower and more methodically. Doing so has forced my legs to strengthen and my mileage has increased. But yeah, to answer your question about the packs. They are very comfortable and never feel too heavy. Oh and as for a chair…I have a hip issue that makes it hard for me to sit on the ground. So the chair is worth it for me. The Tanner, Escelante, and new hance are all on my list…can’t wait to be on those soon. If you want a real butkicker give that Bill Hall Trail…thunder river/deer creek loop a look. It’s a beating but completely worth it.
@TRUUTAH60559
@TRUUTAH60559 3 месяца назад
Yea that loop looks fun. And I only hike in altra lone peaks, I started wearing em when they were the 3.5s (imo the best ones) and still have 3 pairs in boxes, and I’ve never had issues like that. I dunno if it was just new hance or too much weight for new hance, but that trail is a mother and I’ll never step foot on it again lol. I think I made it 5 miles and called it. And last year it got really messed from the record snow, rangers were getting injured on it, trail was just giving out under their feet. It’s very rugged, short, and steep. I get why people say you should go up and not down with a full pack.
