This was my intro to AFI.. I had someone take me in as a friend when no one else would when I was 12... He showed me this album and so much more. I have such fond memories of listening to this album he burned me onto a CD (sorry lol) in the winter on beautiful snowy days while I walked to his house before school. We'd sit and draw and basically hide out before we had to go to school and he'd walk with me so I wouldn't get bullied.. He saved me from some horribly dark places in my life after my father died when I was 13 and I really just didn't want to be alive anymore. Him sharing music with me had such a massive impact on me. years later after we went our separate ways and just grew apart he messaged me after he saw me in my university library. he said he didn't want to bother me but wanted to say hello. I told him we should connect and catch up but he killed himself a week later. After that AFI played a show opening for the Smashing Pumpkins in Toronto and I went to go see them by myself for that friend and it was still one of the most beautiful moments in my life. I'm not religious or spiritual or anything but I felt he was there with me. anyways. just saw how meaningful this album was to people and wanted to share my story too. I'll never forget this album.

Sorry. I remember when this album released, at first was like 'man this doesn't feel like Afi..' (I grew up with their more punk phase).. anyway, this album released shortly after my brother died. It ended up helping me a lot and yeahh this album is very meaningful for me too.

xdanierox funny story, I met them in 2010 after the show and we were waiting outside on the side of the building with a group of random people and a lot of them were laying on the ground because it was like 1am and Adam was out there with us on the phone walking around and like stepping over people laying on the ground and I could hear them say "I wish one of them would come outside" and I just laughed to myself.

I met him after a show in San Diego. I didn’t expect any of the band members to stay since they just got back into CA from being on the road. Adam & Hunter we’re outside meeting every single fan, taking pictures & just talking. He was incredibly nice! When he learned where me & my friends were from he asked if we could make it to the next show since it was only a 30 min drive...we could, just young kids w nothing going on & he asked us our names & emailed his tour manager them & put us on their guest list! We showed up to a sold out show & got in the pit. It was amazing & my friend was bawling the whole time because she couldn’t believe it was happening. Wasn’t expecting any of that & made me love the band even more being a die hard.

That's what shocked me when I saw them the week Crash Love came out. I'd seen them when Davey was still growing his hair out to where it was on Sing the Sorrow, then I'd missed them on that tour for STS, then I was deployed early so I had to give up my tickets for the DECEMBERUNDERGROUND tour. However, on the Crash Love one, I was expecting this crazy ass show, now that they had a shit ton of awesome songs since I'd last seen them... but they were only on stage for 45-50 minutes and it was cool, don't get me wrong, but it was kind of like "Yea, they're getting up there, I totally get it." Then saw them right before Burials came out and ho-ly fuck, the best show I'd seen that year, easily. It's like they didn't want to get off the stage and just kept coming up with song after song, for over an hour and a half, playing their hearts out. THAT was the show I thought I was walking into four years prior.

I remember hearing this at Tower Records right after it came out. I bought it immediately. They weren't my typical style of music as I was a huge rock, grunge, 90's rock and old school metal fan at the time which I still love but Jade's guitar playing blew me away. Totally copped so many riffs from him from that day. One of my top 5 guitar players from that point to today. Great band.

I got to watch them perform at the forum on March 11. The one thing I didn’t discover is I’m getting too old to be out front where the mosh pit is. They still put on a great show. And even stopped at one point to help one of the fans that have passed out. Unlike that piece of work, Travis Scott, don’t let people die at his concert.

You know what’s crazy? I was and still am a huge afi fan and I bought all the guitar mags of them back in the day and I remember them talking about this album and they said music has become stagnant we are bringing it back. And when I first heard girls not grey on the radio I couldn’t believe how good it was and how different from anything they’ve done. And when I heard the opening song from when I bought the album first day I said to myself “they have done what they said with this” and they did from then on music started morphing from post hardcore and Emo to what they were doing and so many bands came out of this I could tell.
@AnthonySforza

Man... this album. When it came out, I was stationed in Fallon, NV (An hour east of Reno) and the album length was perfect, to pop the cd in before I put the car in drive, to it wrapping up the last few notes as I was finding parking every time I went to acting school. I listened to it so much, that based on the song or what verse, I could tell if I was making good time or not. When I had iTunes (Until about 6 years ago) this was seriously still one of about six albums in my 485GBs of music, that I could listen to from beginning to end.

Oddly, I never saw their videos on MTV... and as far as radio play, only heard Silver and Cold once. Then I heard it went platinum and wondered if perhaps music was outgrowing things like MTV and the radio. To be fair this was 2004, before RU-vid and such. I also bought the album like six or seven times, two for myself (Ex wouldn't relinquish possession of it, so I had to buy another one) and Christmas of 2003, that was my gift to people, that year. A copy of Sing the Sorrow.

Sing the Sorrow and In Reverie by Saves the Day both came out around the same time and I still consider them two of my most important life changing albums. STD and AFI thought me (as a musician - especially in the punk/emo/rock genre) that it’s ok to be melodic, dreamy, moody and atmospheric while rocking hard as balls. Can’t beat AFI gang vocals either, fucking SIGNATURE shit right there.

One time Davey almost lost my wallet because I traded it for a sharpie so he and the band could sign some stuff for me but I only met him and he took the sharpie with him backstage to get the rest of the band’s autographs for me but he apologized and then went backstage and found the sharpie and came back and gave me a hug and then I got my wallet back and I hung their autographs up on my wall (they had signed the album insert for me) and then a few years later my mom threw it away when she was cleaning my room before we moved :( I’m sure he remembers. For some of us old fans sign the sorrow symbolized the demise and end of an era. Hardcore AFI was more than just music to some people. It was a middle finger to the mainstream. Afi didn’t even need to go to dreamworks to “make it”. They were selling out venues and not for cheap. I remember paying like 60$ which was a ton for a artist not in the mainstream. But I understand that that wanted to do things differently by then.
