Backyard Skate Park Phase 4 - Building a Mini Ramp

I've been working on converting my backyard to a skate park for a while now, and finally ordered enough wood to finish the mini ramp. This is 12' wide with 3' coping and a 4' extension. I made a ton of mistakes, but figured it out, and am really happy with how it turned out.

wood swells when it soaks. If you soak it, flip it over (wet side down) to screw it in. You can also save your muscles by buying thinner skins x 2 layers, rather than a thicker 1-layer. That strategy also lets you stagger the joints for a smoother overall feel. Cheers!!

Yes Andrew is correct. The two thinner sheets would help.

Back to Blading it’s looking good though. I’ve helped to build a few temp indoor skateparks in my day. Super fun experience. I’m 40 this year and looking to slowly step back into aggressive. It’s been many moons and this backyard action inspires me :) take care!!!

Watching this journey has been so epic thank you for sharing it all! I've got to say that at the start of the video when you said that you would be skating that way I knew that there was no way! I remember when I was younger watching the halfpipe in my local park being built it took 3 or 4 days as I seem to remember. And that was with a premade metal skeleton and a team of professionals fitting all the wood! So glad you finished it, it really looks amazing! Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks for producing this video. Like just about everyone else at the moment I'm also planning to build a mini-ramp in the coming week and have watched about 20 videos this far and used sketchup to design my ramps. It's great to see where you faced issues as I'm sure my first attempt will be disastrous with way more troubles than you faced. Wondering if I'm just going to end up with a bunch of expensive scrap wood. I'm not sure if this is correct (armchair youtube expertise) but from what I've seen others post the plywood sheets should be laid the other way (landscape vs portrait) as it makes bending them easier. I'm going to have to go back and rewatch some of the other vids to confirm this. Apparently if it's too stiff you can lay the sheets flat and pour hot (boiling) water on it and leave it for a few minutes. The heat helps to loosen up the resins inside the ply much like when heat moulding a cabon boot. You didn't mention if you used hot water or just wet towels (cold). The end result looks great and I'll be super happy if I end up with something half as good. Love the width of your ramp... Anyway, thanks again! Love your videos.
@BacktoBlading

Yep! I guess either way works but I’m going to lay the next sheets horizontally. I shouldn’t need to wet them but will find out in a few weeks.

Metal coping would help you out, because pvc can be very slippery. Another tool that helps is a circular saw. It will make cutting 2x4’s ten times quicker and straighter. Overall you did a great job. If you can get ahold of some skate lite or gator skins, your ramp would be super smooth! Again good job, I love ramp construction and Iam also building right now as well.

When you’re putting in 2x4s alone putting in the screws before the 2x4 to hold it on the other side makes it a lot easier and putting ply on horizontally makes it bend a lot easier

A proper outdoor-treated surface is probably the most obvious upgrade. Only two options I know of, though. We all know Skatelite, it's practically an industry standard. There's also Gator Skins, which is a little less expensive than Skatelite. There might be more outdoor-treated hardboards out there. Putting down another layer might mean you'd need to re-do the coping yet again, though... Replacing the PVC with actual steel is another option, but really expensive. You wouldn't need anything as thick-walled as schedule40, sch10 would be perfectly fine for a backyard feature... the problem is where I live NOBODY stocks sch10, it's all sch40, and getting sch10 shipped costs several times the value of the pipe itself. When you were talking about on day 1 how difficult it was to put together... I'm like "can't you press one of your kids into service? I mean, what are kids good for if not free, albeit low-quality, manual labor?" And then I saw you'd convinced your daughter into doing your bidding, and all was right with the world. Just built myself a practice rail made from salvaged materials. Posted a 15min frontside practice session to my channel if anyone is interested in watching a 37-year-old absolute beginner grinder. A miniramp is definitely a plan for the future...

What an adventure! You learn the most by making mistakes you don't want to repeat, haha. I know all about this. I would 2nd the comment on using multiple thinner sheets. My old ramp was two layers of play and another layer of masonite as a skate surface. I wouldn't use masonite as it will only last about a season (one of my mistakes, haha), but skate lite or similar would be great to consider over bare ply. Also, steel coping! I can't stand the feeling of the plastic p rails!

Awesome job Law! Wow, you did this in 5 days and it looks great! I also built a mini - or rather micro (3m wide wide, 6m long and 70cm high) - last summer, but it was a long project over months just spending a few hours here and there, but definitely worth it. Especially now I use it almost everyday! Have fun and stay safe! PS: Yes, bending the plywood is horrible! PSPS: What radius did you take for the ramp? 6feet? PSPSPS: Do spend enough for a good tarp as a cover! I'm already at tarp nr. 3 since nr. 1 and 2 got ripped by the wind! PSPSPSPS: looking forward to you skating it!

I wonder if he ever figured out the sheets bend way easier one way vs the other. It seems counter intuitive but folding it hot dog style (in regards to a 4x8 sheet) works much better. This is because of the orientation of the wood grain or something like that.

Good effort. How are you attaching the lumber and ply. Do you have to pre-drill holes, are you using a special kind of screw or is it just straightforward self tapping screws? I find if I don't pre drill holes my drill constantly skips while I am screwing everything in.

I’m not predrilling, but of course I’m a horrible reference to “right thing to do”
