A fly and a flea in a flue. The fly said let’s flee the flea said let’s fly, so they flew through a flaw in the flue. Thanks for the video.

You said it man. What's interesting is not how unique this is, but how often we see dangerous installations like this.

I have the same one you show in this video with the spillage coming out right where you had you're hand.. What can I buy to fix this..I have no choke off point mine is the same going out the chimney?

Thanks so much for your answer. If the BPI expert determines that is a boiler malfunction or a malfunction installation.. Does his report will be enough to get the boiler replaced? Weill Macklein asked me for a plumber report.
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance 8 лет назад
+Michelle Michellin don't have the answer for that one, but I doubt it would need replacement. Just tuning it should do the trick, if the chimney and other systems aren't hurting its performance.

Hey, Dig the videos, Very helpful. Say im exhausting 800cfm inline fan going from a fume hood to outside, and this is all being done right next to the water heater/furnace in a laundry room and been kind of getting a numbness in the nose n ear with a bit of confusion. is there a good chance its coming from the furnace/water heater even without the furnace running? Im almost possitive the hood im using meets the fume hood requirments of removing 2000-3000fpm at hood face thru a 6inch duct to 8inch at fan.
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance 8 лет назад
I've never heard of a fume exhaust hood in a laundry room- that sounds very dangerous. PLEASE call someone to run depressurization testing and CO detection on both your furnace and WH, it sounds like you might be coming close to the edge. Of death.

Where did this test come from? Wouldn’t the pressure switch prove the efficiency of the flue pipe pressure? The holes drilled in the flue pipe will no release exhaust gas into the structure. I have never heard of this test.
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance Год назад
This is a widely used diagnostic, used in weatherization programs nationwide. It’s built into the test capability of many combustion analyzers. You should try it.

great video man, i have a question, can i use my uei em201b manometer to do the flue vent draft pressure test like u did? 😀thanks
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance Год назад
Definitely not, Roy- that manometer has an accuracy of ±0.02”WG < 2” wc, which means it'll be off by up to 5 Pascals. You'll need to be accurate to 1 Pascal at least to do this test accurately.

I'm having a problem with our oil furnace in the basement. When it runs we are smelling an exhaust odor on the first floor right above where the furnace it, it's a strong smell of a car exhaust-like odor concentrated in one corner of the room, the smell takes about 15 min to dissipate after the furnace shuts off. This started about 3 days ago. I don't have the money for a repairman & I'm concerned about CO2 in the house, we have the windows open & the place is ventilated but is there any way to know what can cause this & is it an easy fix? Also when the furnace turns on there is a thump that we hear in the basement, I sometimes hear this thump while the furnace is running at times it happens twice while it runs, the thump has been going on for a while but I'm wondering if it's related to this new odor problem.

Way late but maybe someone else can use the help. I have the same issue with a Thermopride oil furnace in a rental on Whidbey island. I have had three HVAC techs out to no avail. So, just looking at it, I was realized (D'oh!) the install of the barometric draft damper was so out of whack it could not operate - period. Exhaust gas was obviously (from the soot stains) exiting the flue here as opposed to make-up air entering. Waste gas should never exit inside the habitable area. We have taken apart the flue, re cut out the hole for the damper and reinstalled it (we took the pipe off and brought it back to our house). We will reinstall the pipe and try to fund an HVAC tech that can tune the damper (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cCjAozBKpT4.html). If you are getting exhaust gas in the house, this is likely the first place you should look.
@DonziGT230
@DonziGT230 4 года назад
You say that you can feel the combustion gasses coming out of the pipe, but that's extremely unlikely. You'll feel heat, but that doesn't mean that the gasses are leaking. The fact that you have a good flow in the small part of the pipe proves that it's venting strongly and that opening may not be a problem at all. You would need to use something that can show air flow near the opening to know if it's sucking in or blowing out. A match can easily show the air flow direction.

Yes, we prove any of our findings with testing- this was just a quick field vid. Watch some of our longer combustion and exhaust testing vids to see some more pro tools in action: smoke pen, smoke puffers, etc

I have a problem where my furnace will turn on and blow warm air for a minute or two, then blow cold for the rest of the cycle and it will do this about four or five times before turning off and not turn back on. It only turns back on when i turn the thermostat off and then back on, , could this be from that pipe being clogged?
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance 9 лет назад
Yo 216- your furnace should not be acting like that, obviously. It could be the temperature limit switch, which would mean your system airflow is too high, which could be because the pressure is too high. It could be a problem with another sensor, but I highly doubt it's due to a chimney blockage. Most systems will go on running like nothing is wrong when combustion gases are spilling into the house.

What pressure would you want to see on a 2” flue vent to outside from a 3 burner 60,000btu furnace? I have some flame rollout and doesn’t look like an HE crack. Wondering if the inducer fan is under performing or if flue vent is clogged.
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance Год назад
-3 to -10 would be a normal range. But 2 INCH FLUE? That might be your problem right there. How about 4” instead?
@momikeoutdoors
@momikeoutdoors Год назад
It’s 2” pvc from inducer to outside (venting to the side of the house). Looks like the unit calls for 2” on the side. Goodman gmp075-3
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance Год назад
Aha, PVC will have a positive pressure, don’t draft test that. Just go outside and if it’s blowing on your hand, it’s probly not clogged. Flame rollout on a sealed combustion furnace tells you something is VERY VERY WRONG.
@momikeoutdoors
@momikeoutdoors Год назад
Thanks for the reply. I’m thinking the inducer is pulling just enough for the pressure switch to work but not pulling/exhausting enough air for the burners to operate correctly.
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance Год назад
That’s not an inducer, it’s a power vent, and it should be forcing flow along the entire vent system.
@mts7274

Wait, so no explanation on what the actual 'fix' is for this particular setup?
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance Год назад
Yes, something has to be removed. It’s a confused combo of devices- inspect and test the whole exh system out through the chimney top, and make it work better.
@mts7274
@mts7274 Год назад
@@HomePerformance lmao, okay well 'make it work better' is not very specific. but it's too bad there aren't videos on youtube that really show a homeowner how to properly maintain/improve their water heater flue system.
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance Год назад
Well, like anything systems-related, it’s a bit complicated, M. Do you own a digital manometer like the DG-8? Do you have a combustion analyzer? Are you familiar with flue diameters? Can you do a chimney inspection? The point of this channel is to educate homeowners, yes, in part. But it’s also trying to level up pros who do this every day, because many many of them are also not equipped for this type of diagnostic approach. Hope you’ll subscribe to learn more.

Hi Shield- I used to hold every BPI certification they had, but I let them all go and now I work on the dim frontier of home performance. You need Building Analyst to start with, but I'd also add Envelope Pro if you're an HVAC tech, it'll fill in the gaps of your current expertise. Good luck buddy, let me know if you need coaching.

i don't understand this: you pierced holes in the chimney to insert the probes?
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance 7 лет назад
+Alexandros Gialidis in the flue, to be precise. A chimney is under negative pressure by design, so no gases should escape through the test ports (holes) you make. Then, plug the holes so they can be re-used for later tests.
@alexandrosgialidis3565
@alexandrosgialidis3565 7 лет назад
so if a hole is in the flue no smoke should escape inside the room? also what do you use to plug the holes?
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance 7 лет назад
+Alexandros Gialidis correct, air should be sucked into the flue unless something is terribly wrong (that's why draft testing is important). UL 181 tape is what I use.
@alexandrosgialidis3565
@alexandrosgialidis3565 7 лет назад
can this be used as a permanent fix in a fireplace inox roller? Meaning to insert a probe permanently in the roller, connect it to a pressure meter (what meter would you suggest) and fix the meter outside the decor cladding?
@HomePerformance

+Alexandros Gialidis yes you can- Dwyer Instruments make gauges for that!

This is exactly how the force draft is set up on my furnace. "Atmospheric draft". The guy who installed it claimed that no fumes would escape. Can you suggest where I might get the proper enclosure. The unit is a trane xr80. Thanks for posting this video.

Hi Cho- You should absolutely get it looked at by a consultant before moving ahead. Combustion gas exhaust isn't a DIY thing. What I do sometimes is tell a highly reputable company that I'm looking for an independent consultant, that I will NOT be buying the services from them (nothing to lose on their end if it turns out to be a simple fix). Every home is different, and prescription doesn't make sense without knowing the facts.

Small plumbing company installed in my house a brand new Weil Mcklein Boiler 6 months ago. Flu Pipe Test is positive to CO2 8 times out 10 that is tested. Installers don't want to take any responsibility because they claim that it could be the water heater or the chimney. I never had this problem with the old boiler and it was the same chimney and same water heater. Other Plumbers agreed to come, check and give me a report but they would shut off my services if the test is positive and I know it will. Those who did tests before don't want to me reports. In 5 more months my guarantee with boiler distributors and with bad installers will be expired. Please help me out. I am woman alone with a house to take care and I am devastated with this situation.

+Michelle Michellin if you're having a Carbon Monoxide issue (CO) you need to call a BPI-certified contractor at bpi.org to do combustion testing including spillage, draft pressure, CO, temp and worst case depressurization. They will be able to evaluate where the problem comes from and help solve it. Watch a demo: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JRQ6no4dfAw.html

Hi Michelle, call the plumbing inspector in your town, or call your gas company, town should have done an inspection up the installation completion. At that point, pass or fail, the installer fixes, inspector comes back, says ok, it passes or fails, Then you make finale payment. Call both entities, get it fixed,,Learn from it,, call the gas co. next time

My point is that its obviously useless doing any testing with such venting in situ. You never mentioned the non code venting in your vid? Neither did you mention the lack of vent pipe supporting straps? You dont know where what "idea came from"?
@HomePerformance
@HomePerformance 7 лет назад
+mike gert testing is never useless. Some things work even though they're against code. If you just take what a book says at face value without understanding why it works or doesn't work, that's not science, and you won't find it on my channel. Testing will always teach you something if you have a curious mind.

Shut that system down, its illegally installed. A giant liability to every technician who touches it. GIANT LIABILITY! A DEATH TRAP with CO spilling into the basement,, The system was never inspected. The state of Mass. has the toughest codes ever for good reasons, these kinds of installs. Dangerous is an understatement. Deadly Install. in mass. we have to notify home owner. call gas inspector, they will Lawfully go after the installer, The gas company if natural gas, needs to lock out the gas meter till fixed.. This repairman, the minute he seen this install as it is, should have the home owner in this video explaining why its being shut down, to other installers, take a hammer drill, drill a circle of holes, enlarge the chimney opening, duct properly, insert clay thimble, round if possible, size accordingly, always bigger, never restrict flue gasses, use Portland cement at clay brick chimney, stucco around repairs, use up left over cement., learn to be better installers, your career is over when you kill someone from CO poisoning, good luck Warren

What a foolish reply: you dont seem to realise that that vent cannot give any kind of useful reading - so much for your reference to science. I understand perfectly well how gas installations work.. That vent is creating a dangerous condition esp. as it goes into the masonry chimney which, by the way, is also a non-code entry into the chimney! Your reply is essentially an attempt to cover up your ignorance and lack of practical experience. Try telling an on-site Plumbing Inspector about your theories?
