Daredevil on Netflix has some incredible fight scenes but it's not a Movie, will we stick to our rules or will break them? But what about its inspiration, Old Boy and its remake?
And how do video games like Sifu, League of Legends, etc influence films like The Kingsman, Man of Steel. Spiderman: No Way Home and Arcane?
And the worst? Steven Segal might be in the video again...maybe?

The Spike Lee version of "Old Boy" isn't bad at all. The problem is that it will inevitably be compared to the original Park-Chan Wook version, _and come up short._ It's not an insult to Spike Lee, it's just that the original was a masterpiece with no practical room for improvement.
@pabloc8808
@pabloc8808 Месяц назад
The problem is the original Oldboy hallway sequence works within the narrative; it's both a sad and a brutal movie, and the scene is gritty and realistic: think when the guy stabs Oh Dae-Su, everyone steps back because it's a serious escalation of the violence, and those goons weren't prepared to see that happen. The score makes the scene almost sad or melancholic. So while Spike Lee's version is great when it comes to choreography, it falls short when it comes to everything else, because now it's just "the protagonist is a badass who beats up a bunch of thugs" and we've seen that a thousand times.

What I understand is good. The original is foreign listeristic. I mean, he's getting overpowered and stomped by 20 guys and he's able to stand up through that. Just no, they all have sticks too. And they're just beating the s*** out of him. And what he doesn't feel it, and with a knife in his back. He's still able to do big shoulder spinning turns. Which would you know make the knife twist around in his back?And cause it immense serious pain, discomfort and inability to do much ut he fights like its not even there after getting up

I would also at least do a quick shout out to Smith vs Morpheus as well. That short fight they have is brutal and efficient and does a masterful job of showing that while Morpheus is very adept (and we have seen this by how well he handles Neo earlier) even all his skills are completely useless against Smith who savagely beats him into submission. It's part of the story of the fights in that movie. That way, when Neo decides to stop and face Smith at the end ("he's beginning to believe..."), we as the audience know what is at stake. We saw how our boy Morpheus got curbstomped so bad and know Neo is going to be an underdog in this fight!

Jason Statham is an incredible movie fighter. He has many movies where his fights are great and shot very well, and he has other movies where the skill is there but the filmmaking is not on the same level. I'd also make it a point that restraint in using a fight scene or using brutality out of the gate until it's absolutely necessary for the character makes it all the more impactful. I always think of Transporter 1, where Statham is obviously shown to be a badass, but doesn't hit super hard until the bad guys blow up his car, which seriously offends him and makes us root for him to kick ass as well.

The common theme between the good fight scenes is that it shows the realism of a fight, the protagonist actually getting hit and feeling the damage, and the fighters getting tired as a whole. @@MarcusFlemmingsI will take up the defense of this fight.You've already said that seeking realism at all costs should not be the ultimate goal of a director because it's cinema anyway. And I agree except that the concept of the film (superman) is already very fanciful and can only happen in the cinema. So putting realism in there allows you to create a contrast that serves the themes of the film and makes it easier to make us believe in this superhero story. You also say that it undermines the dramaturgical issues. On the contrary, I find that it serves them. In the previous scene, Zod said that he was going to massacre all the earthlings and that Kal El won't be able to stop it. So the fact that we don't understand much allows us to show Superpan's feelings when faced with Zod who is totally dominated and cannot manage the situation. The realism of this scene also allows us to emphasize the brutality of the combat, which increases the stakes and makes us feel the extent of the villain's hatred, which makes us understand that he must be stopped at all costs, which leads to the end of the fight and the death of Zod. So I find that this staging serves the film and does not undermine it, contrary to what you seem to think.

@MarcusFlemmings Месяц назад
@@monstergeek1613 I hate to be THAT guy, but this film didn't do any of that, on a drama level, the actual facts (apart from my opinion) backs this up. The Luke vs Vader scene carries so much weight. Even just the short clip you show in this drips with the emotion and stakes that are conveyed by their battle & dialogue. Almost brings me to tears. I think bad or mediocre films forget that all the composite parts - fight choreography, lighting & cinematography, performance - all these serve only as storytelling mechanisms. When the mechanism becomes the point rather than the story itself, the film loses its way.

The arcane fight scene has great animation but the actual fight scene was pretty bad. Idk why people praise it, it has all of the hallmarks of "bad fight scenes". Shaky camera, a million cuts, and the worst aggressor of all, the camera/composition is WAY too zoomed in. Now, there's two reasons I can see for this: lack of good choreography and cutting down costs by zooming in to animate less. Look at any Mob Psycho 100 fight and THAT'S how an animated fight scene should truly look.

One of my favorite fights (besides Raid 1 and 2 main fights) are the ones from "The Night Comes For Us" which has Iko Uwais as the antagonist and the fight scenes have pretty much the essence of what Gareth Evans did in The Raid movies. Another example i can think of is Red vs Blue, it's mostly a Machinima yes, but there are certain parts of the series that were animated 3D and for the fight scenes (and i mean until Monty Oum died, who was the guy in charge of making these choreographies) were really good, and its quite amazing that very few works can be at the level of what Monty Oum did. Of course, his animations weren't perfect, rendering issues and some weird cuts that will hardly ever be noticed by the first time you watch them, and also attack moves that are just straight bullshit defying the laws of physics, but still, it is worth knowing that i was being made by an indie studio some 14 years ago and i will still say it how it amazes me that very few works can be compared to Red vs Blue fight scenes (anyone interested in checking it out, a guy made a 1 hour compilation of the action scenes in the series, just don't watch the last fights since it is where the quality dropped by a lot since the death of the main animator for these fight scenes)

As a longtime gamer, Sifu has quickly risen to one of my faves of all time as well. Great video, I love when you touch on the context outside of the fight showing what makes it strong and comparing the standard film style relative to the fight. This comes up mostly in the old boy original cut, when you showed the cuts of the og film cuts I felt chills. This is mostly due to the strength of the og film but your editing was great and this great editing continued throughout the vid. I'd love for you to evolve the series into what is the heart of good fight scenes instead of breading down bad ones.

I am 100% that filmmaking should minimize it's video game-inspired camerawork and choreography. It is nearly always a bad choice and pushes the viewer out of the scene. It corrupts the illusion of disbelief by feeling like a video game, and film should NEVER feel like a game.

I like that you talked about Return of the Jedi! I remember the Mr Plinkett Phantom Menace review where he touched on how the less-elegant less-flashy fights were all about the story and subtext or something. I think he mentioned that a very pumped up Luke, whose emotions are venturing into dangerously dark side-esque rage, absolutely would be just unrelenting in his wailing on Vader. There's no composure and cool stylised sword play but just overpowering Vader with how much fury he's striking at him with. And i do find it such a badass moment and, for me, it is more engaging than like the epic duel between Obi Wan and Anakin in episode 3 because of how much character is in it. Obviously to each their own, and i wouldn't anyone to not enjoy their favourite scenes just because of how i feel (and I'm not going to pretend that I didn't love the duel when i saw the movie), it's their right to enjoy it and I'm happy for them if it does bring joy to them. :) But, again, for me, it's a moment where you see how dangerous Luke could be if he gave in to the dark side (but of course he doesn't) and it's a shock to see cool, calm and collected terrifying Darth Vader suddenly not being in control and even collapsing to the floor, helplessly just trying to hold his lightsaber up to attempt to shield from the blows Luke is Luke-ing all over him. There's probably much cleverer things one could say about this RotJ fight but ceebs analysing it right now, I'm currently in bed at 10 p.m. procrastinating from doing the dishes

You are right about the screen left to screen right thing, but there's more to it than that. Because we Westerners read from left to right, it just seems more natural to our brains when things move in that direction on screen. But there is a reason why things sometimes move right to left. It can be that the Director doesn't know what he's doing...but if it's a good Director, he is intentionally trying to make you feel unsettled or uneasy when things move that way. Your subconscious is supposed to sense that something isn't right. Remember, the left hand margin on a page of text is always fixed - but the right hand length of text can go on to whatever length will fit on the page. Therefore, when things move from right to left on a movie screen, we sense that someone is moving toward a hard margin. Which means they could be moving into a trap. Or some other ominous situation.

No matter what you say, a chick taking down 5 dudes at once in a raw fight is always going to be hard to sell to most people. Because it's not gonna sit right. Only few movies had got it right like Terminator 2, Atomic Blonde, Fury Road. But why these movies were appreciated but others don't is because in these movies women were fighting like a WOMEN and not like a man. Ex: taking advantage of their small body to dodge attacks, more agility and flexible, surprise attack instead of direct attack, using literally anything to attack/defend/injure their enemies, etc. If you still don't get it then watch Atomic Blonde's fights scenes and compare it to Queen Cleopatra, Echo or any movies/shows which has sTrOnG InDePeNdEnT female leads. You can clearly see the difference.

Be really interesting to see an episode focused on boxing/mma/martial arts tournament fight scenes. Maybe throw in Real Steel as a dark horse as well. Something I've always preferred about animation when it comes to fight scenes is that it doesn't suffer from the problem of actors clearly waiting to be hit, or not looking like they're REALLY trying to kill each other. There are certainly movies that pull it off, but with animation you can do anything.
