BAD NEWS For Ukraine At "Peace Summit." Support Is Eroding. | Prof. Nicolai Petro

The peace summit did not go the way it had been envisioned by the Ukrainian and Neocon visionaries who sought to gain a massive PR victory with this event. The thin outcome document despite blaming Russia for the war, does not address any of President Zelensky's main demands. What does this mean for the state of the war and for the possibility of real negotiations in the future? To make sense of it, I got with me again Dr. Nicolai N. Petro, a Professor of Political Science at the University of Rhode Island.

Based on my experience in life...im 64. The humans ego is the biggest strength and yet impediment. Sitting in a position of relative comfort its easy to talk big and make even bigger plans. But once immersed into the problem one tends to become a hell of a lot more pragmatic. Take the occupation of France by Germany in 1945. France had to agree or just get scraped off th map. Sure they had the resistance. Similarly in greece. But if they overstepped they were severely punished by collective punishment of entire village Massacres. So they bided their time until the whole world came to their rescue. What happened to their self esteem...? Sooner or later they had to pick up the soap in the prison shower. Ukraine and indeed Israels problem is the collective world is not coming to their rescue. The only 2 choices is M.A.D or bend over

UNFORTUNATELY neither the Swiss conference nor this interview dealt with the "elephant in the room". The conflict has NEVER been about Ukraine. The Russians have consistently reminded us of the historical context, vis a vis NATO's "march" eastwards, wherein Ukraine has been used as a) the battlefield and b) the sacrificial pawn, by combined Western powers to overthrow and dismantle Russia. Discussing the ins and outs of a negotion process between Ukraine and Russia is fruitless without understanding that the NATO allies don't give a damn about the people of Ukraine or of Russia. If they did care they woud not have started this conflict, trashing Ukraine by constant political and social interference, dating from at least the signing of the Budapest Memorandum and Munich conferences of the 1990's. It is the NATO/European "alliance" that must take responsibility for all of this and unconditionally surrender. The one seed of hope to bring that about could arise from a truce between Russia and Ukraine, but it begs the question: "Who in the Verkovna Rada and/or AFU has the authority, power and courage to tell the West enough is enough. Get the f**k out of our country! keep your f**king weapons and cash! Leave us talk to the Kremlin!"

Russian "peace terms" were more of a joke - that you seem to have missed out. What shows in Ukraine - that you are equally missing - is the Russian army being hamered and retreating north of Kharkiv and East in the Dombas. It might not be a bad idea to check up on reality, it would help immensely to put Putin's stunt in context... and to understand how ridiculous and presumptious he is.

"Every cloud has a silver lining" Millions of Ukrainian refugees are voting with their feet, trying to take advantage of the opportunity created by their own government and, on a wave of compassion that is quite understandable in the circumstances, are trying to get out of the tender embrace of Ukrainian democracy. This fleeing stream, filled with love for the homeland, would probably have rushed faster if the authorities in Kiev had not introduced a ban on young, mature and overripe men leaving the country. Today, every Ukrainian is a soldier, which bodes well for the enrichment of the Western European gene pool. Ukraine can simply be partially exported along with women and children. Let Ukrainian women give birth to healthy and beautiful offspring for Germans, German Turks, or Poles, as long as they earn in euros. Representatives of the Kiev authorities stubbornly claim that doing politics with a face glued to a tank track is not only possible, but also greatly enriches the spirit of the nation, hence all the cosmic calculations, primarily concerning Russian losses. While it is difficult to expect Volodymyr Zelensky, who plays the double comedic role of president and father of the nation, to maintain even a semblance of seriousness when the Russian army maneuvers over more than twenty percent of the lands that once belonged to Ukraine, the ministers of Western economies should know some moderation in ridiculousness. The Western narrative revolves around the thesis that the Kremlin's actions have completely failed politically. This bold thought experiment is based on the somewhat exotic assumption that the Russians' goal is to "conquer" Ukraine. If the Kremlin's intention was to quickly annihilate as many Ukrainians as possible and permanently conquer the entire tribal territory, one missile with a low-power nuclear warhead, 5-10 kilotons, or possibly some chemical or biological warhead equivalent with comparable destructive power, would be enough. Knocking off the head of the brown cockroach of Ukrainian nationalism, for example, in the form of the liquidation of Zelensky, is also not an optimal solution. There will certainly be many comedians ready to entertain and scare from the presidential chair in Ukraine, especially since this occupation is as lucrative as it does not require excessive qualifications, which is also proven by thirty years of Polish democracy. As you know, cockroaches are not only able to survive without their heads for quite a long time, but even actively look for mates and copulate. Currently, supplying weapons to the militants of the Kiev cause is like putting out a fire with gasoline and, contrary to appearances, it has a logical justification. Planned burning can prevent the conflagration from spreading further under certain circumstances. It seems that the actions of the Russians are of a preventive nature, which, of course, does not escape the attention of Western European leaders. In politics, its efficient practice always aims at maximizing profits, which sometimes means bearing burdens today to take advantage of the new situation tomorrow. Any nuisance caused by the inflammation in and around Ukraine could bring some benefits to the EU and Russia in the long run. For example, Europe will reduce its dependence on Russian energy resources, and Russia will accelerate its efforts to emancipate itself from shaky Western European contractors, entangled in an anti-Russian military alliance that primarily serves the interests of the U.S. The destruction of Ukraine postpones for an indefinite, but probably long time, all accession divagations beyond the margins of scenarios worth considering, saving the West from the need to tame Ukrainian nationalist denial in the form of pride, worthy of a cannibal boasting of the number of devoured enemies. It is possible that the end of hostilities will not only not stop the wave of emigration, but will even accelerate it, when the surviving men, now chained by the duty of defeating the Russians, want to join the Ukrainian dream far from the borders of the devastated country. In this case, Europe can count on another injection of cheap and grateful labor, whose representatives will only begin to manifest some broader ambitions in the second generation. For the above reasons, haste in striving to curb the Ukrainian death drive is rather inadvisable, and railing against Vladimir Putin's bloody pragmatism should be more often taken under logical control, because in a broader perspective, the EU project needs a Russia satisfied in its needs, and not loud marches in honor of Stepan Bandera's achievements.

The Istanbul agreement might serve as a basis for negotiation but that is about it. Russia has no need to negotiate on any aspects which it has already achieved through force of arms. DPR, LPR, Crimea; all Russia controls or will control. About the only thing that Ukraine could negotiate on is its access to the Black Sea. However, that has a time limit. Should Ukraine not be willing to negotiate and force Russia to end the war through force of arms there will ne no negotiation; Russia will dictate terms, Ukraine will accept. If it doesn't the war will continue.

Ukraine territorial integrity WAS addressed in the final document. In particular, the following paragraph states it clearly: "In particular, we reaffirm our commitment to refraining from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, the principles of sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of all states, including Ukraine, within their internationally recognized borders, including territorial waters, and the resolution of disputes through peaceful means as principles of international law." Unfortunately I think the bad news for Ukraine is precisely that Western leaders have decided that they'll sacrifice every Ukrainian left to either weaken Russia as much as possible or even risk a larger scale war. The reason is that it's become an existential matter for them. They blew all opportunities for a peaceful resolution of the conflict and insisted that Ukraine needed to fight to achieve a better position at the negotiating table (Borrell dixit). The simple matter is that they cannot justify the hundreds of thousands of dead ukranians and the destruction of their country if the end result is worse than the very outcome they sabotaged back in Istanbul.

I find it hard to know how to take Nicolai Petro's assessment of Zelenkis support in Ukraine where we have so many young men, presumably supported by their families, either refugees abroad, already committed to the Russians, or hiding out in fear of the draft. It seems to me comming up with any real figures of support for the war in Ukraine would be incredibly difficult.

The issue is not money as much as it is that Ukraine is running out of fighting men. Soon, very soon, Westerners will have to put boots on the ground, and that we know will not happen since the only fighting the West can do is from 40,000 feet. Russia hopes the French come in; they at least know how to surrender with class.

Contradictory to what Russia said about reflecting "realities on the ground", Putin is the first who ignores those realities. He wants Ukraine to give him more territories that currently Russia doesn't control. If we wanted realities, he would go for the currently controlled areas.

If nato get an involved dircetly the dynamics of this war change along with the the targets. Most of the ammo, gear and systems come through poland so automatically thats going to kinzal and zircon missles. Also the US will not put troops on the ground without air superiority and with the lack of robust logistical infastructe thats going to be hard to establish.

Radicalism is determined as to how advisories treat each other and the wonderful approach of the then ANC under Mandela always adopted an approach of leaving nobody behind no matter what your crimes where, and would have loved for other forces could have seen this as an opportunity to find ultimate peace not, a weakness. They however chose a path to negate that from happening. Good luck to you all, our efforts, pains, suffering and killings all in vain.

LET US GET IT RIGHT. Switzerland, by order of Ukraine, invited "selectively" 160 countries and/or entities out of 195 countries to the so-called "Peace" conference or otherwise a break away short holiday fiesta. By the way, not all of them are recognised as countries and/or are members of the UN. i.e. Cabo Verde, Timor Leste, Council of Europe, Ecumenical Patriarchate, European Commission, European Parliament, Kosovo ( a place that it unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia the same way the Eastern Republics of Ukraine and Crimea did. Out of 195 UN countries 70 signed the joint declaration imposed by the west. This is 36%. Considering the enormous efforts, propaganda, manipulations and temptations the west has put into this it can only be seen as a huge failure. FYI and those manipulating everything and anything with their unstoppable propaganda.

"The organisers of the meeting in Switzerland are proposing yet another manoeuvre to divert attention, distort the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis, misdirect the discussion, and to some extent, reaffirm the legitimacy of the current executive power in Ukraine. Hence, it is expected that the conference in Switzerland will avoid addressing the fundamental issues underlying the current crisis in international security and stability, including the true roots of the Ukrainian conflict. Despite efforts to present a seemingly respectable agenda, these critical matters are unlikely to be discussed". (V.Putin 14/06/2024)

Speaking as not brilliant armchair theorist, I still assert that discussions of this sort are interesting and informative but framed in wrong paradigm a. Starting point is treat comment from any side is to be viewed with complete scepticism b. We can almost completely disregard Ukraine's desires and focus only on Russia's. Russia must justify its human and material losses by showing some real gain. This gain I would say include Kiev, Odessa, Transnistia and even Hungarian border! OK pretty extreme but anything less leaves situation open. c. Would Putin settle for early/simple peace or go for 'total, long term solution'. Left to Putin this seems unlikely but my point is simply this : the question / paradigm for discussion is will Russia (not just Putin) go for THE solution that meets Russia's objective present and future needs. How does this get discussed? That's for the real theorists to answer.

Does any Putin supporter here worry that 80 years after WW2 the largest nuclear country invaded significantly smaller neighbour and annexed its territory? If Russia will be forgiven, then they can continue to do the same with other European countries, including France and Switzerland.

President Putin read the ukrainian constitution as a lawyer and he outlines where the power lies, it is not a guess work, it's the law. I recommend to Mr. Petro to read the ukrainian constitution all of it to understand that zelensky has zero power now and should be kicked out by the unrainian parliament.
