Bad Tank and Bad Fuel - Easy Fix?

I picked up this Honeywell Generator from Facebook Marketplace for $100. According to the seller, it probably needs a new carburetor and the fuel system cleaned. Turns out it needs more then just a fuel system cleanup. Even with a new carburetor the engine is surging on choke and will stall when the choke is turned off.
Generator Model: HW5500
Displacement: 337cc
Hipa Carburetor: amzn.to/3S44vsH
Website: www.hipastore.com/
I use Harbor Freight Super Heavy Duty Degreaser in my ultrasonic cleaner.

For flattening both sides of the plastic isolater and the carb you could try resurfacing it on a piece of 200 grit sandpaper glued to a flat surface. You make having a well stocked inventory of spare parts look normal. Why do the clean freaks always regard our parts stash as "hoarding"? A discussion of the importance of venting to atmosphere on those carbs might be helpful. You helped me overcome that obstacle last year. As always James a well made video.

The problem with the HIPA carburetor was not the plastic isolator it was the gaskets! I just got the same HW5500 generator for free with fuel leaking. I put the $20 carburetor on - which solved the leak - but it only ran with the choke on like in the video. I put the original gaskets back on after getting some hints from the comments. It runs perfectly now. Thanks to all!
@timmccurry2227
@timmccurry2227 Год назад
When you installed the carb gasket over the plastic isolator I noticed the port opening did no align correctly. It was open to the air bleed channel in the isolator. This will give you a massive air leak. I've run into this many times and learned that you have to match up the gasket to the plastic isolator and the carb to the isolator or you get a massive air leak. I've always had better luck getting aftermarket carbs with the plastic isolator and gaskets. I really enjoy your channel and your work.

@killer2600 Год назад
The devil is in the details, this is very much like a Taryl Fixes All video where the owner tried and failed a DIY fix with aftermarket garbage that was the wrong stuff. I also noticed when James went to try the original carb, he left the new gasket on and double gasketed the install since the original gasket was still stuck on the carb.

There used to be an aviation rubberizing coating that farm machinery dealerships parts departments used to carry to coat the inside of rusted even rusted through metal fuel tanks. It might still be available though perhaps not as readily as more machines switched to plastic tanks to eliminate the rusting fuel tank problems. NAPA auto parts might also have it. Might be quite costly as everything else is now days but when you don’t have a spare tank it might be a way to safely repair one.

I've used TSP from the paint store (not the "TSP substitute") in very hot water to clean varnish from gas tanks, and then citric acid to de-rust them (several soaks with boiling water). Evaporust or Metal etch (Phosphoric acid) ups the de-rusting ante/ I've seen other channels use muriatic acid to remove rust, but that's out of my comfort zone. I've mimicked the process (and maybe the materials) that came with a Motorcycle tank sealing kit years ago.

You can set the gen for maybe 61.5 Hz under no load but no higher. If it drops excessively under load this may be a sign that the motor is a bit down on horsepower and there may not be anything you can do about it (short of a rebuild) if the motor is running well otherwise. Or the governor spring could be set to the wrong position but usually not.

Sometimes it can be something as stupid as an intake gasket. You have to watch those gaskets carefully because sometimes the outer footprint matches but the hole in the middle is the wrong size. Like Bill says if you spray carb cleaner around and the lean condition goes away temporarily, you have found the general area of the vacuum leak.

A 5000 Watt load at 120 Volt has 2,88 Ohm (R = U square / P). Please measure your load. You are mostely satisfied if the generator delivers 116 Volts but at 116 Volts you are only drain 4672 Watts. P = U square / R. This generator delivers 122,1 Volts at your 2,88 Ohm full load so the output is 5176 Watts. Turn down the regulator to 120 Volts at medium load and your frequency will go up. You should use a calibrated load to compare numbers. This generator has a strong powerhead. The displacement of the engine is a little bit low. You can increase the output by grinding down the head to increase the torque a little (you need high octane) or bore the cylinder.

Just had another look at this one after you posted the pic of the kids in the school in Guinea, The tank you took off this one might be a good one to do a test run of cleaning tanks using electrolysis. It looks quite badly rusted so it would be difficult to clean up using other methods. Its a sort of standard size and shape so if it does clean then you would not find it too difficult to use on another generator. If it did not clean up then you would not lose much. If it did work it could save you 60 dollars. Its all a learning curve anyway is it not.
