This is why I prefer UK tent reviews to overseas ones. The conditions are NEVER perfect so you get a better idea of how well the tent will hold up in a situation that isn't "idillic sunset with a gentle breeze and amazing vistas" ;)

I have the previous revision, bought September 2016. I camped on the shores of Loch Lomond and gale-force winds came in at me sideways. The tent buckled, sure, but it never caved in. Never got wet either. Fantastic for the price (just £80 back then).

Thanks Trev. Looking forward to the full video. Personally, I've always preferred the 'outer' first type tents like the Banshee but this one seemed to hold up well. More than one night out camping in wet weather with moving locations might cause a problem or two if everything is packed together. ATVB Graham

I know what you mean, Graham. Thats the great thing about the banshee. I cant see how the outer could go up first with the naturehike but maybe I will have to attempt it! Thanks for watching, Graham!

Good review...thanks for taking the time and trouble to make it. I agree with Olly Outdoors...try walking poles on the side guy lines. If you just use a guy line pegged at the bottom it tends to pull the side of the fly down and not necessarily away from the inner. If you use a walking pole that is taller than the point where the guy attaches to the fly, the guy pulls the fly up and out (away from the inner) before (having wrapped it securely around the pole handle) you then run the guy to ground and peg it. Does that make sense? I use this technique with my SMD Lunar Solo LE and it works a treat.
@SummitOrNothing

It sounds like a great solution. In practice. I must admit that my rope tying seems to lack any finesse so will be interesting to see me try for sure haha. Thanks Ken

I've got the first gen and it did surprisingly well in some Tasmanian wind and sleet etc. Just the 210d version at 1.5kg on my kitchen scales, not including footprint and pegs. I still don't like the single entry thing but it did well. If it had been flattened by the wind I had decided to use my hiking poles with a bit of rope at the top as braces from near the high point down each side - roughly where the new lines come from. This is obviously stronger but I haven't experiemented to see if water comes in via them. As a cheapish option I think they're pretty good but the Big Agnes design is for UL camping, not for copping serious weather in remote areas.

I just received this tent as a gift. You can't beat the price and quality of this tent. I'm thoroughly impressed with this product. I have a Sierra Designs Comet (3 person tent) which was 3.5x the price of the NatureHike and honestly, the quality of materials and construction seems close to the Sierra Designs model. Zippers on the Sierra Designs are heavier duty for sure, but the rest of the tent materials are comparable. The NatueHike fly is definitely stout and sealed. The tent is fairly lightweight for a 2 person tent too. Highly recommend! Thank you for the review.

Hi I've got one of these. £65 on Amazon earlier this year. The fly is a bit flappy so I've added velcro loops (double sided) close to the guy line pull outs on each pole element. Now pretty solid!

Also have Banshees (200 and 300). Bombproof and tolerant of poor sites/setup. (Esp. 200). Current favourite is Macpac Microlight (£15 at auction, with 2 other tents that I sold for £85) - but look at Berghaus Peak 3.1. - similar cost. Naturehike is great for lowland/sheltered sites - and use the mat. I have yet to try the fly with the mat as a lighter weight option - but I thing that this would be a great idea.

What a great video! Thanks for sharing. I've been looking at the Vango Banshee for bike touring, but I quite like the size/weight of the NatureHike tent and also the fact its freestanding. So, I've got a trip to Islay coming up for the annual whisky festival and I'll be pitching a tent due to the limited accommodation. My one and only concern is whether or not the NatureHike is going to be midge proof. I've heard that some tents from abroad are fine for keeping out the mosquitoes but not for the wee Scottish midge. What do you reckon?
@SummitOrNothing
@SummitOrNothing 4 года назад
Sorry, I seemwd to have missed this comment. So far its held out midges, but then I have zero experience with the Scottish midges, so can't really comment. Although, by now I imagine you have made a choice one way or the other. Of you did take the plunge with a Naturehike it would be great to hear how you got on. Great review guys, but just a couple of notes about the tent that were inaccurate. It does have a pocket on the front ceiling part, I put my phone in there for easy access and the tent can be taken down from the inside. Just unclip the poles and place them back into the ground sheet clips, then unclip the inner tent from the poles, starting from the entrance of the tent. Also Ken Henley's idea about the two higher guy ropes is a great way to keep the outer from touching the inner. Keep up the good work on the Moors.

One suggestion is I would join your side and back tie down locations into one peg anchor points instead of two which is probably why your tent fly was not as taught as it could have been.
@davids9549
@davids9549 5 лет назад
Good video thanks, nice to see a tent set up by an 'ordinary' bloke in 'ordinary' UK conditions! A suggestion if I may with regards to how you pack your tent: Ditch the provided stuff sack (or just use it for home storage or chopping up for repair material); Carry the flysheet in the main outer mesh pocket which comes with most packs these days (particularly effective when the flysheet is wet); Invest in a small lightweight waterproof bag the right size for your inner tent, which is the only part of the tent to be carried inside your pack's main compartment (this will ensure it stays dry); Poles can be strapped into the side pockets, or carried longitudinally inside the pack (additional stiffening!); Your peg/guy bag can go wherever you like (I keep mine with the flysheet because that's the part which goes up first). Initially I found this system took a bit of getting used to, because I had to get out of the mindset of having my 'whole' tent in one place, but I find it works much better, saving weight, using pack space more efficiently and keeping the inner tent in drier condition.

Good to see the new tent surviving its first night on Dartmoor. I did wonder if you could use walking poles instead of pegs for those guy lines on either side - the ones where the inner and outer were just touching - I hope that makes sense. Some might be critical of the brand for its low price. They look like affordable versions of the MSR tents. If it's something that only gets used a few times a year, is it worth spending any more than this, I wonder? Just so you know, there's something not quite right with the URL for your first impression video, in the description. ;-) I was going to have a look for a reminder on the weight and pack size. Looking forward to the future Dartmoor video as well! All the best.
@SummitOrNothing
@SummitOrNothing 5 лет назад
Cheers Olly - I guess you could use hiking poles, maybe I will have a look at that next time and see if it helps at all. We did mention that its closer in size and weight to the MSR Hubba Hubba in the last video (Link amended now - thanks!) but without seeing one of those in the flesh I cant really say for sure if its worth the extra cash or not or whether the Naturehike will survive for long. We will continue to test it out and see how long it is until things start to fail us. But so far, as an alternative to the Banshee, I am happy to keep giving it a good go!

Love your videos! :) Always a good chuckle to watch your videos. Would love to see more tent reviews tested like this. Have you looked at the 3F UL Gear tents that are not the Lanshan but shaped like MSR Hubba NX? Also a Naturehike Cirrus tent - it's semi-Geodisc shape looks like it would hold up pretty good even without guy ropes in strong winds. I'm assuming you're using the 30D silicon nylon version of the Cloud Up in your video? These UL fabrics tend to be so thin and unreliable, that they can easily rip, like the delicacy of the tent floor. They also stretch a lot once it has been rained on so you'd need to repeg the tent to make it taught again...even then, you can't really make it that taught due to the limitations of angles to the ground. i wonder if the 210T Polyester version of the Cloud Up would hold up better in the rain. They don't sag like Nylon, tend to be cheaper as it's heavier but more durable and water resistant if coated well. Food for thought anyway! Keep your videos coming!

Do you have the 20D or 210T (outer cloth) version of the Naturehike Cloudup 2? And what is the difference?
@tahliamoore1102
@tahliamoore1102 3 года назад
From the colour I would say it’s a 20D. Which is the nylon version. The 210T is a polyester fabric. Nylon soaks up some water and stretches (hence his fly starter to touch the inner by morning and it looked a bit saggy). But is technically more water proof then the polyester and lighter. The polyester is heavier, but doesn’t stretch at all, so will remain taught and not flap about as the night goes on. Also is a bit cheaper. This blog post below explains it in more detail, but is heavily bias towards ploy tents. I think I am tempted to go with the Nylon for the weight factor. www.slingfin.com/blogs/the-beta/tent-fabric-101-nylon-vs-polyester-vs-dyneema-cuben

@SummitOrNothing

I prefer the Cloud Up 2 - the star river is larger, so a little heavier and harder to keep warm when on your own - if you are looking for a tow man tent then the star river would probably suit better having doors either side.

I spent a night in a storm on mountain in Norway with Naturehike cloud up 3. That was a complete nightmare. I was up all night holding the tent in place. I had to go out in the middle of the night to DIY more guylines on the tent, which actually helped. It collapsed a bunch of times through the night. When sunrise came I had a look at the damage. The poles were completely deformed and bent and the fabric torn up. For calm summer nights, these tents are absolutely fabulous. And the price is almost too good to be true for what you get. BUT! I am not bringing these tents on another hike in the mountains. xD
@GEX-23
@GEX-23 4 года назад
The shape of this tent does not benefit from the strong wind resistance, you should look for tents with as many sticks mounted in X, low in height, and the anchor strings should be linked to the sticks, for example: Husky Flame, Simond Makalu, Vango Mirage etc. but these are not very comfortable, so it depends on which trip you want to make. Paths with sun!

You must be kind of an amateur dealing with tents right? Every tent has a stronger position against wind and it should be preferably positioned that way, newer models come with more attaching joints so it can be set to resist stronger winds...

Would rather play cards against Nath in this tent or the banshee? I can't judge much on quality over the Internet, but I do like the lighter colour (color for us lazy guys, this side of the pond.) When filming in banshee or the tarps it always seemed gloomy. I think the white material makes a better backdrop. Now that I have that settled, when are you guys going to try fancy pants cooking over a camp stove?
@SummitOrNothing

Trouble is George there's a strict no fire policy in Dartmoor, although we are looking for some locations to try a bit of bushcraft fire cooking. Cards with Nath? You must know by now that the minute that tarp is up Nath is in the land of nod. I know what you mean about the extra light in the tent. It does feel much brighter and roomier than the banshee. Let's hope that it holds up! Thanks, as always, for watching!

The regular was ok, but it did last just 20-25 nights. The zip starts to have big problems. The tent was cheap comparing to famous brands, but if I think that it didn't last more than 25 nights, it is not that cheap anymore. I was happy with the tent, but because of its short life I won't buy a naturehike tent anymore. The upgrade is not interesting. The new version is heavier and it is not an ultralight tent anymore.
@SummitOrNothing
@SummitOrNothing 4 года назад
The zip seems a bit on the cheap side, but to be honest, 25 times is quite a lot of use for a £120 tent, surely. A lot of people would be lucky to get out three or four times in a year and so forking out for an MSR may not be beneficial... Incidentally this very tent stood up to 60mph winds better than its double priced counter part on one of our adventures, the MSR was absolutely mangled, and the poles had to be replaced... and it was only its first night out,. The Naturehike still stands today.
@vverbo

@@SummitOrNothing Yes, also brand tents can be of low quality sometimes. Ok, I got it, I wont buy MSR (-: , even because the waterproofness seems to be very poor. I loved this tent for the lightness and the space, just the short life disappointed me. Enjoy the summits :)
