Welcome to this quick review and test ride of the Das-Kit Bafang 250w rear hub motor electric bike conversion kit.
This electric bike kit is excellent value for money, if you are looking for a cheap way to convert your conventional bicycle to an ebike.
Link to 500w Bafang kit with battery: amzn.to/3mcYOZH [affiliate link]
The Das-Kit 250w e-bike conversion kit is aimed at the European market and it conforms to current UK and EU electric bike laws - 250w continuous power with a top assisted speed limited to 25km/h.
It uses the proven Bafang geared 250w hub motor that uses planetary gears, which allow the motor to spin at high speeds, making it a lot more efficient than a larger direct drive motor.
Small geared hub motors produce more torque, making them good for climbing hills. They are also easy to pedal with the power switched off, making them much more suitable for someone who only needs the power on hills.
There are only a couple of downsides with these motors:
1. They produce a little more noise than direct drive hubs.
2. The nylon planetary gears can wear over time (especially if you are a heavier rider, or you carry heavy cargo).
Generally the Bafang hub motor is incredibly reliable, but if you do have any issues with the planetary gears, replacement parts are cheap, readily available and fairly easy to replace for a DIY enthusiast.
Motor kit specification:
Motor: Bafang 8FUN rear wheel gear hub motor (35Nm-45Nm max torque), silver / black, 36V 250W
Dimensions: Rear drop-out width for motor: 135mm, motor diameter: 160mm,
Gear fitment: Screw-on freewheel gear block (up to 7-speed) Not compatible with cassette gears 8/9/10/11 speed.
Brake disc rotor: 6-hole disc brake mount, also compatible with rim brakes.
Display & Throttle L6BT 2,5″ LCD display incl. back light, display extension cable approx. 1900mm, 6 AssistLevels, Thumb Throttle (fitting optional).
Controller: CT4 Controller 36V, Current 7A, maximum current 15A (1 Sec.),
Connections: Motor, Battery, Display, Front light up to 42V Controller dimensions: L x H x W = approx. 9,0 x 6,0 x 2,7cm.
Pedal assist disc: (12 magnets) Installation on the right side of the bottom bracket. For an installation on the left side, a special Hollowtech & Octalink Sensor is needed.
Distance from Pedal assist sensor to magnetic disc approx. 5-7mm
Wiring loom length approx. 950mm
Brake Levers: Artek brake levers, cut-off sensor on the left side
Spokes Stainless steel, silver Rim 26″ / 27,5″ / 28″ hollow-section rim

36 is probably battery voltage, 28 wheel size, 150 might be the amount of magnets in your motor, but that's just a guess.

Hey bud, just a question. Here in Spain the legislation requires the bike to NOT be able to star on its own with a throttle, PAS is fine. 1- Can you only hook up the pas and not the throttle and the bike will still work 2- Is there any way to make the throttle only work after the bike is already moving? Thanks a lot if you ever reply haha
@protectaa

Hi just build one myself, you can not hook up the throttle. We have the same law in the Netherlands so I skipped the throttle as well.

Dear Bob, you mention in the comments that you’ve experienced the BBS01 and Tongsheng mid-drives. I think the Tongsheng is torque sensing whilst the Bafang mid drive and hub drive are cadence drives. Can I ask you please, which is your preference between the two mid drives and also what is your preference when you also throw the swx02 hub drive into the mix? Thanks, I really cannot decide what to go for! Yours Steve

I have a 250w 10Ah bike with 1 - 5 pedal assist, 20" wheels and six gears. It depends on how fast you want to go and how much exercise you want. I live in a hilly suburban area and have the bike for exercise so I do not have any assist on the level or moderately rising road. On moderate hills I will have it on level 1 using second gear or if I am going too slowly then on level 2 and I can pedal in third gear at maybe 12 to 16 kilometres per hour on moderate hills. If I am in traffic I crank it up to level 5 and can climb even moderate hills in top gear at 25 kilometres per hour. On a really steep hill I use level 5 and drop back to second or third gear and maybe 12 kilometres per hour. I balance the assist and gears so I can keep up a steady cadence and effort. I am 74 and weigh 65kg.

seems rather pointless . low top speep. next to 0 power. and just added a bunch of weight to the bike. you could get up hills easier just by pedaling a lighter bike without the battery controller and motor....
