I really like how you're talking about "class fantasy" in these BG3 videos. Most guides just talk about what the classes do mechanically and overlook how they fit into the wider world of the game, which is a big deal in an roleplaying-heavy game like this one.
@JeannieLove damn what gave it away that its a video game? I would argue a majority of the players would care consider its an rpg. A larian studios rpg that takes role playing a lil mote seriously
Super important note: Helmets, Gauntlets and Boots do NOT count as armor usually, apart from some specifically heavy armor outliners, thankfully they added this as them being counted as armor, not wearing anything was pretty much a fatal detrament.
I was hoping for a Wizard this time, that maybe you'll start the series from the casters. I'm thinking Wizard/Fighter for the first playthrough, waiting patiently for overview for these. Great content as always!
For me it would be the biggest struggle to choose subclass. Berserker seems like the most damage but wildheart seems more interesting and I'm curious how wild magic is gonna turn out
Roleplay idea: Dark Urge Berserker 10/Fighter 2 called Kratos (coz why not move him to forgotten realms), ur more like in God of War 3, leting ur rage take over whenever u feel like it is time for some fatality :D Usually played berserker in BG2 coz he felt pretty OP and u cant get trapped by Kangaax imprisonment so i just smack him together with Korgan Torn between this and sorc/warlock or warlock/fighter (maybe if wyll new origin story turns out to be great)
I don't know if you are, I am guessing maybe(but not too in depth since the changes) I am thinking of doing the Monk but I know they did some changes so. Hope to see that guide❤
I wonder if they still have the Gnomish trait in this game where they get advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom AND Charisma saving throws from Magic. Gnomish Barbarian, sounds weak, until you consider the ignored aspects.
This video brought to mind a debate that my friends and I have held for ages: is Conan a pure barbarian, or a barbarian with a couple of rogue levels, or a fighter, or a fighter with a couple of barbarian and rogue levels?
I feel like as Robert E. Howard wrote the character, he’s more of a Battlemaster Fighter 10/Rogue 2 (in Baldur’s Gate terms). He is a cunning thief that leans into his skill and power with the sword, the control of which is never usurped by his emotions.
Conan was written before the Barbarian became the rage fuelled beast he is primarily thought of today so mechanically he's a Fighter/ Rogue multi class like the first reply says.
@@CrazyxEnigma I am of a similar opinion to the replies posted so far: Conan uses his wits rather than blind rage to defeat the enemy. During the Queen of the Black Coast run of the comics this can be seen very well: Conan uses armor to gain an advantage against enemies that don't, he combines martial arts with his regular fighting, etc. To me, he might be a fighter with a couple of rogue levels.
I love that you pointed out the nuance of the class fantasy beyond "brute". I've always kind of imagined them as the "charisma caster" of melee classes. Instinct and emotion over training doesn't have to mean that you're a hulking dumb-dumb.
I ran an Eladrin wild magic barbarian/battlemaster fighter in a tabletop campaign recently, and I flavored his rage as merely an innate channeling of fey magic. He was of average intelligence, could hold a normal conversation, and didn't fly off the handle really ever.
Conan in his novels is quite intelligent and he's what a lot of people think of when you say Barbarian. Barbarians all being stupid is flanderization of an old trope.
Barbarian was my favorite play through in EA. Only problem was the Barbarian specific intimidation dialogue was super fun to use, but it normally let you avoid combat. I’m a barbarian! I don’t want to avoid combat!
That depends. Are the enemies you have to fight little weak girly boys or something that's will pump you up;). May chose to intimidate the boring trash and go have a drink until a real challenge shows up.
Barbarians are awesome tanks and do some pretty epic damage, even at low levels! They are pretty fun to play in D&D. I like some of the homebrew stuff Larian has done too! Another thing they mention is that Barbarians can throw other members of the party - or enemies - so they can throw halflings, gnomes, goblins etc... which could make for some really fun hijinks! Especially if you are playing multiplayer, you can be proficient at throwing your friends into your enemies haha! There really are no bad classes!
Actually (at least in early access) the "throw" ability isnt class specific at all. Anyone can attempt to throw both objects and creatures, your capability at doing so depending on your strength. For example in an encounter i used lei'zel (fighter) to throw my halfling barbarian up on a cliff.
@@Bzk-- Berserkers get the enraged throw tho, wich knocks people prone without any checks, it's legit op, you can legit throw anything you got in your pocket at an enemy, knock him prone, and blast him with a melee attack after.
@@Jajalaatmaar shit that would be fun!! On a future play through, I am totally gonna have a gnome or halfling rogue and have a big half orc barbarian throw thrown around in battle! I would totally build around that just for the fun hahaha!
At least in early access the barbarian had some of the most amusing class specific dialog options to also make up for the fact that they're not built to be a very good face character. You can kinda just roar at people and intimidate them into backing down often with situational advantage.
After playing EA for a bit, one thing i really appreciate is that the devs managed to make even full martial classes A LOT more interesting and engaging than in many other titles (for example the pathfinder games) where often they can quite literally just use basic attacks all the time, thanks to all the extra stuff you have access to besides class specific features (combat maneuvers, weapon abilities etc)
Sadly the PF games went too by the book. The game becomes overwhelming. Without a mod to auto cast buffs or things like that, it's super boring. I started the game and kinda left it because of that. Things that work in PnP don't always translate well to video games. Also they didn't have a turn based mode, thats shit
@@Zorish373 i dont Remember kingmaker as it's been too many years since i played it but im still playing WotR to this day. If you cant be arsed to deal with buffs and optimized builds etc just tune down the difficulty. Infact i think the pathfinder games are a lot more enjoyable on lower difficulties
Thank you for pointing out Barbarians have nuance! They're Sorcerers to the Fighter being a Wizard when it comes to how they typically gain their martial prowess. I'm curious about the Wild Magic subclass I typically avoid things that have that type of rng but I may make an exception depending on how its implemented.
Melee is cool and all, but I prefer to throw my axes, hammers and chests at the enemy. So satisfying when you are not in melee range :D Also improvised weapons are so much fun. Got disarmed? Just attack with a chair next to you :D
in early access this was the most fun for me. Going into Frenzy and throwing Goblins at each other or throwing large crates down on people lol. They don't need a ranged weapon, because everything is a ranged weapon for them !!! SOOOOO Fun. Larian made them very table top.
Love the barbarian class, every time I start a new system (D&D 4e, D&D 5e, PF 1e, PF 2e) I start as a barbarian. So versatile and it gets you up and playing immediately. Loving the BG3 content so far
I just wanted to say, that this series of yours is a godsend, since I'm currently trying to decide if I should play a sorcerer or some two-handed wielder!
First thing I want to try is make a halfling barbarian duo and because your strength is high, and your weight is low. You should be able to throw each other into combat. Pull a fastball special!
wellllll.... can't wait for the 100% XD should take ....... weeks? months? YEARS? i hope not XD but still ..... i mean Tripple the Scenery word count from all lord of the rings books and twice of all of game of thrones lenght of cinematics XD
Can we use throw to toss our followers at enemies? I want to throw a barbarian into a group of enemies and make the dnd version of the fastball special 😂
@@MortismalGaming :O wow they really thought of everything! BG3 is really shaping up to be a once in a lifetime game! 1st rule of the fastball special is you don't talk about the fastball special
Barb, everything is now a projectile. Seriously can pick up some heavy things and stuff them in inventory. Toss that 40kg barrel of liquid, toss that chest, toss those crates. Some of these maps you are like 2-3 stories high. Javelins hurt a ton from up high, but a chest can squish 3 goblins. Or throw an enemy and push another one.
Not a ton of ranged options? What do you mean? Ive been carrying around a backpack of Javelins, Greataxes, Knifes, and explosives for when something is a little out of reach. Throwing a goblin or big rock works too.
This will be my first play through. I'd like to create a Guts inspired character. I'm not familiar with d&d and RPG games and the amount of information is overwhelming so I figured I'll play an easier character for my first run.
Great Video now I can't wait to multiclass a Barbarian Halfling with a Monk, bare fisted and angry, poking the enemies eyes out and snapping their necks in utter Rage and kicking them in the shins... mostly that probably...
Exhaustion seems to be broadly missing from BG3 compared to 5e. Which is good, it's a bad mechanic anyways lol. I'm glad that martials and half casters seem better across the board.
In the past whenever i tried barb they were cool but they always had 2 main problems : 1) you lose control and they attack rest of the group or npc so you must run or cast hold person , kill and rez him ecc... 2) in rage/frenzy status they become a piece of glass and they easily get killed or even 1shot by bosses. Did they change this?
I watched a video about Paladin breaking oath, which create kinda diff class (really reminded me lore accurate Death knight from warcraft) - so cant you be oath breaker if you are multiclass barb/pal?
What is the tankiest build? Barbarian, druid, or a combination of the two? I want to spam poison, have a ranger, and a warlock that affects enemies status like making them sleep, while I have a tanky dumbo up front.
the BG3 Berserker is exactly how I Homebrewed the class in my Game. Seriously, I have no idea why it had this drawback to begin with, an extra attack as a bonus action is not really that much stonger than what Totem or Zealot Barbarians get,
With multiclassing available in full release - I can't wait to try BEAR Barian - Half Orc - Druid (Moon) + Barbarian multiclass. That combination is wild in tabletop. Played it many times - always extremely fun :-P Will see how it translates into BG3, but I am very excited to try it. Love to play Barbarians and Druids. Barbarians 💪💪💪 Stronk!
I am gonna make Dragonborn Barbarian. I plan to multiclass sorc (as in BG3 Unarmored Defense may actually stack with Draconic Resilience ; in D&D it does not but in BG3 description of the passives is different than in D&D so it may stack). Alternatively I may try to multi class Druid as I have heard that we may get Dinosaurs wild shapes. Idk about you, but Dragonborn getting angry and then transforming into T-Rex sound awesome.
I think i'm gonna go for Karlach. I'll build her Barbarian Berserker 5 / Rogue 5 / Warrior 2 (or Rogue 3 / Warrior 4). A hell lot of mobility, action and bonus action !
