Whether it's via being a druid or getting the ability through some other feature, it's always worth getting the ability to talk with animals in a Larian game.
Favorite class by far. Just really cool all the way around. It can do pretty much anything. You can tank, do solid, Melee, heal, or use offensive spells. Best role-playing too.
@@electriczagnut4937Indeed! As an American, these books weren’t part of my childhood; I discovered them at 16 when I was fortunate enough to take a trip to West Germany (at the time), 41 years ago this year! I still have some of the books packed away in my attic!
I remember in Neverwinter Nights 2 you could have Natural Spell, a feat that let you cast in wild shape form and you could turn into elementals and be a giant elemental caster, D&D 3.5 edition was really fun, good times.
Personally, I prefer 3.5e. I also liked NWN2 as you could take on Plant Shape with the expansion. You could take the Elephant's Hide (+7 natural armor) feat right before Natural Spell, and could take Oaken Resilience (immunity to poison, sleep, sneak attack, and critical hits) as the next feat. Elephant's Hide freed up the Barskin spell slot, was instantaneous, and could not be dispelled. Oaken Resilience made rogues obsolete against Driuds.
Important note - wildshapes restored on short rest, and it’s duration allows you to rest in animal form. Past level 4 you can permanently remain in wildshape form if you wanted to. It was crucial difference for Gritty Realism game I played :)
Can't decide between Druid or Bard. Its gonna be one of the two for sure. Elf will be my race either way. I always choose elf if its an option, its a personal tradition of mine 😊
One note on the Spores Zombies, is that even though they only have 1 HP they should have Undead Fortitude, which allows them to make a CON save to keep from dying every time they take damage. They are much more difficult to kill than they first appear. At least for a free body to throw at your enemies.
It's also about action economy as well. Whether they get a chance to make an attack roll or an enemy waste theirs attacking it instead of you is a massive benefit.
@@johnmcanus3349 i kind of wish we had a "summoner" option besides necromancy. I know wizards can summon elementals and warlocks have their one pet if they have pact of the chain, but as far as i know nothing other than necromancy lets you summon more than one buddy at a time.
@@coolvin9307 it is. I just thought that, as with 5e rules, summons would require concentration. I was elated to find that they didn't, but bothered by how my ice mephits would literally nuke me after each long rest
It's important to remember that there are a surprisingly large number of animal npc's which have VERY useful information, such as pointing out secret locations, or showing you where something is buried. Druids in wildshape can't talk to people properly, but they can talk to animals all day long.
I"m really excited to try a Drow Circle of Spores Druid - I hope its viable. I wish we knew more about how Larian is adapting them from ttrpg if at all.
Trust me it'll be viable. And if it's not? Just respec lmao. Pick up some mutliclass features to tweak it around or drop it and try another class for your character entirely. But I'm pretty dang sure that spore druid will be tons of fun to play

I would say that you should not focus on spellcasting or wildshape... they work best when used together. Almost all good spells of druid are actually concentration spells, meaning you dont really need to be casting all that often. Doesnt matter if land or moon, once you have your spikegrowth/entangle/summon spell out, you can freely do whatever you wish - heal allies, reposition enemies with thorn whip, illuminate dark areas, scout for enemies, go bear and smash, go cat and hide or owl and fly so you dont lose your concentration... Only when your original concentration is not used you are supposed to cast other one.
Thank you so, so much for the sheer level of effort you put into providing actually easy to parse information for people who might be overcoming their own worry that they're not bright enough to grasp D&D rules, or any other number of reasons. These videos are a must watch imo and you've been nothing but helpful since the day I subscribed to you last year - thank you for the work you put through to us!
I'm thinking of a multiclassing as a barbarian druid, using my rage to attack and throw enemies and then getting so angry to the point where I turn into a literal bear, seems pretty awesome to me
Having a hard time choosing between Spore Druid and Moon Druid coz i heard you can wild shape into dinosaurs at higher lvl. Illithid powers also have special wild shapes so thats cool too.
One of my favorite multiclasses for druid is monk 1/moon druid x. The idea is just gaining unarmored defense with wisdom and dexterity. By the 5e rules you keep your own mental attributes, so your own inteligence, wisdom and charisma, making it so you can have an AC of 15+ wild shape form dex mod. This combos insanely well with some forms like spider and air elemental that have high dex, making for very high AC forms that can also tank due to extra hp. In bg3 however, we don't even know if this will work.
This is a really interesting idea! I suspect you'd be looking at significantly higher than 15 AC, as monk's unarmored defense would give you +5 AC alone with a 20 Wisdom druid. A wild shape with 16 dex would pump it to +8 AC total. And this would be added onto whatever your base AC was.
mix druid with barbarian, lvl 1-4 druid( circle of the moon)/4-8 barb/8-12 druid, dont worry about physical stats cause wildshape will use its own, just stat up your mental stats as they dont change, game play is basically rage then wildshape into whatever you want i prefer bear, once you our of rage/wildshapes for the day, your still a full caster, welcome to barbearian :)
Год назад
you are not really full caster with 4 levels in barbarian, are you? :D
i was wondering if it will be viable to dip into barb as moon druid, the unarmored bonus ac of barb and rage works with wildshapes then? and why 4 lvls into barb? thought i'd go just 3 for subclass. i imagine bear+bearheart being a fairly solid front-liner. is there something interesting about fourth barb level or just because extra feat (which also sounds interesting)?
Год назад
@@d3lus10n yes, you can go 4 levels for asi/feat. Or you can go just lvl1 barb for rage and physical resistances, not disrupting your wildshape and spellcasting progression that much.
@ Since druid don't get anything at level 11, might as well take 2 barbarian level and get reckless attack. 10-2 is the best combo for BG3 imo. Enough to get CR5 Elementals.
I think I'll do a Warlock run first, just to see how deep the patron interactions go. But as a longtime DnD player, druids have always been one of my favorite classes and I'll certainly complete a druid run at some point.
I got the feeling that the additional options for... Romance will make the druid a whole lot more popular than previews iterations Edit: 69 likes. Excellent!
I was thinking of being a moon druid but honestly the issues with dialogue - not being able to talk as the animal and forced dialogues jumping to companions doing the talking - means I won't. in my tabletop group I'm a wildfire druid, too bad that one isn't in. that would be the easy choice for sure if it was. Sorcerer or ranger? can't decide
My friends tried to get me to play D&D and I never gelled with it despite playing for over a year. These videos somehow still make me nostalgic! Really looking forward to this and I feel like I understand D&D better in general after your videos. Thanks!
Druids look like so much fun, running around as a little or big furry animal! It is a great class! It probably won't be my first playthrough, but I definitely would like to play it at some point.
Is it just me? Or does anyone else hope that there's an option added to the game that penalizes using Jump in combat? I hate the fact that they've implemented Jump as a better means of getting around than normal movement in combat situations. Like, make it so jumping within engagement range of an enemy imposes an attack of opportunity that utilizes the enemies reaction (if they have it available). And jumping up, or down, a certain distance (or more) imposes a dexterity check to ensure you don't fall prone when you land. This would make it so people would only jump when the risk vs reward is worth taking. Or when the chance of falling prone is outweighed by the positional advantages you'll get in subsequent turns. I know this seems random to post on a druid overview video. But the amount of jumping I was whilst going over the class triggered the thought.
Would it be possible to play a druid at meele range without wildshaping? I'm thinking of multiclassing with a fighter so I can do close range with a sword but still have the ability to wildshape.
At such a dilemma. I want to play this game so much, but don't want to play too much of EA so I don't get burnt out or spoil much of anything..sigh..first world problems
Just play :) theres no way you will see everything in act 1 even after a few playthroughs. Plus EA is only a portion of act 1. At release they said there will be around 33% more content in act 1 on top of things being moved around, rewritten etc. So release act 1 will be completely different. You can mess around on EA and still get a fresh experience at release.
A decent constitution modifier is good for more than just hit points, the modifier is applied concentration saving throws, and almost all of the go to druid spells require concentration.
The one thing that bothers me about this class is that the nature skill is extremely appropriate, but putting a bunch of points into intelligence just for that is a bit of a waste.
I don't think I'm playing druid directly... but I'm eyeing Magic Initiate: Druid hard right now. I've wanted to try a Shillelagh based build for YEARS, but never had the chance on table-top. So very stoked that one cantrip is actually going to be in the game!
Isn't open hand let u use your weapon prof to flurry?, and it's free per round asking for a friend? If so mace monk sorcerer for dragon bloodline and sorc defensive spell, I'd be satisfied with only 5 ki
I got the EA because I couldn't wait anymore and I'm having a blast. I plan on putting a few hours in, getting used to the mechanics, and then restarting when all the options are there.
@@Dominick77 generally speaking you take the form of a creature and each creature has a set value of stats. Imagine like your stats get overwritten by the stats of the creature you turn into. Then you add circumstantial bonuses on top, for example a cleric could buff your AC through spells.
@@zzxp1 personally i dislike when It works like it does for example in the pathfinder games cause it encourages dipping to powergame, even when it doesnt make any sense roleplay wise. In tabletop if you went for that kind of thing you would have to back it up with your roleplay, in a videogame tho all that extra package is missing and so you either powerplay or you accept being sub optimal. Which isnt a big deal in tabletop but it can be in a videogame, depending on your chosen difficulty of course.
I Don’t understand NOT playing moon Druid. Even if it wasn’t the strongest subclass for Druid in DnD… WHY are you playing a Druid? To wildshape! Otherwise you’d just play a hippie Bard or something lol So just go all in in wildshape to get the most out of it.

saaame :D If you are not shapeshifting, just go play cleric or some shit
Im going moon, but i will say fungus druid sounds fun too
Год назад
@@Freekymoho fungus is great, even tho I would love some tweaks, like his halo of spores not ending when you lose your temp hp... Very annoying. And also action economy is shit, on your first turn you have to use action to activate halo of spores, bonus to activate shillelagh, second turn you can cast concentration spell and only then can you really start using your extra meele and so on... So actually, you are mostly using just those temp hp to be tanky caster with some nice new thematics spells.
My very first DnD character was a halfling druid. Still one of my favorite characters I've played to this day and I might try to recreate him in a playthrough at some point. Doing great with these overview videos Mortym! Really enjoying these.
I'm new to DnD and Baldurs gate. Can I play as a ranger with an animal companion and multiclass as a druid shapeshifter? Can I have a wolf companion and also change into a wolf myself?
You can. But the animal companion scales with ranger level. And the druid wildshapes scale with druid level. By multiclassing this way your animal companion and wildshapes both end up underwhelming unless Larian makes significant rule changes
@@phantomsplit3491 Thanks for explaining this so well

@@phantomsplit3491 primal companion from tasha is weird mix - everything scales by your proficiency, so it would work perfectly while multiclassed - with exception of hitpoints which scale based on ranger level :( So one hit and your companion is gone sadly if you are not leveling ranger. But there could be some value out of it anyway if you can use the companion veeeery carefully - lets say using only beast of air with flyby and keeping it out of reach after every attack :)
after that 200k video, you got my sub finally (I know, it's only 1 sub). Anyway, you sound like you had an interesting life, and I totally relate to playing games with your kid. I see my 10 and 12 year old every other weekend and we play on the 2 Nintendo switches all the time. I am slowly teaching their gaming knowledge (red things usually blow up, follow yellow colored things, explore before you leave a screen because it might lock you out of coming back, etc.)
Wish circle of the land got a ability to use their shape-shifting power to use a ability associated with the land they chose as their focus is spell casting and would help add some much needed flavour. Shape shifting is only useful early levels for them anyway as their ac is bad.
I'm getting tempted to go with a druid, especially a spore druid, over my usual automatic choice of wizard. A gith spore druid seems so absurd I just might have to do it.
Dunno if it's been brought up, but I think you previously mentioned the "absord" multi-class, one level in each class? Could you do a video on attempting something like that? What order should classes be picked in, and how should the character be built? I am playing at launch with some friends and want to use that opportunity to see what that type of playthrough could offer. I appreciate it, Mortym!
druid is just the best thing that fantasy setting can offer wild shape can be interesting but having wide range of elemental and healing spells makes one of the most useful characters that i can imagine without multiclassing then we have story importance like talking to animals and interacting with all kinds of natural weirdness spore druid i really don't like idea of just rotten necromancer even in real life there are all kinds of spores/mushrooms that can be parasitic and symbiotic while being used as food or poison and so on with that in mind fantasy magical world should offer far more than all schools of magic combined in other words rotten necromancer sounds LAZY and UNINSPIRED and i hope that larian will do a lot to change that
i play the beta long time ago and i see the hunter summons are stronger (high level skills the druid don't get) than the moon druid wildshaping, it's fell strange . it's still the same?
Thx for all overview mate; I was playing Solasta Crown of the Magister for 3 years now, and your overviews are helping me to get prepared for the changes that Baldur's Gate 3 implemented
One of the two must have classes in your party. You are obliged to take a druid or Cleric for Guidance. No divine soul sorcerer sadly. And a lvl 4 feat is a thingy but a bit much. Guidance just enables every single check outside combat it's stewpid 😅
In general in the ttrpg yes, so maybe, as for this game we have yet to see. You'd get the powers either way but the armor/weapons you can use depend on what you start as. For that specific multiclass though, not really because you'd wildshaping and that uses the wildshapes stats
