Here are the Latin verbal components (with English translations) of the BG2 spell schools: Abjuration: "Manus, Potentis, Paro" = "A hand, powerful, I prepare" Alteration: "Praeses, Alia, Fero" = "Protecting, another, I bring this forth" Conjuration: "Facio, Voco, Ferre" = "This I do, I call, to bring you forth" Divination: "Scio, Didici, Pecto" = "I know, for I have studied, with my mind" Enchantment: "Cupio, Virtus, Licet" = "I want, excellence, allowed to me" Evocation: "Incertus, Pulcher, Imperio" = "Uncertain, beautiful things, I command" Illusion: "Veritas, Credo, Oculos" = "The truth, I believe, with my eyes" Necromancy: "Vita, Mortis, Careo" = "Life, and death, I am without" (or "Life, death, decay" if "Careo" was mistakenly used instead of "Caries," which means decay or rotten. I like the latter, myself)
Thanks for this. Latin does seem appropriate since in our world it's kind of a dead language and, to my understanding, on the Roman Catholic Church uses it. My favorite is "Incertus, Pulcher, Imperio" and "Vita, Mortis, Careo". It would be interesting for newer games that have more memory, if they had more chants, perhaps one per spell. A fireball might be the Latin equivalent of: "Flames, go forth and burn"
The clerics pronounce it in "Church Latin" while the mages pronounce it in "Classical Latin." This is particularly noticeable with how they pronounce "incertus" in evoctaion.
Thx for compile - good old days ;) If someone still wondering what they say here is a small hint 1) Illusion: "Veritas, Credo, Oculos" = "The truth, I believe, with my eyes" 2) Alteration: "Praeses, Alia, Fero" = "Protecting, another, I bring this forth" 3) Necromancy: "Vita, Mortis, Careo" = "Life, and death, I am without" 4) Divination: "Scio, Didici, Pecto" = "I know, for I have studied, with my mind" 5) Abjuration: "Manus, Potentis, Paro" = "A hand, powerful, I prepare" 6) Evocation: "Incertus, Pulcher, Imperio" = "Uncertain, beautiful things, I command" 7) Conjuration: "Facio, Voco, Ferre" = "This I do, I call, to bring you forth" 8) Enchantment: "Cupio, Virtus, Licet" = "I want, excellence, allowed to me"
+szczurNocny 1. oculus can also mean through the power of sight so i think what its saying is "the truth i believe through the power sight", though it seems weird to me that oculos is in the nominative case wouldn't it make more sense to be in the ablative, because then it could be an ablative of means. Also if it was being used as an adjective wouldn't you put it next to veritas. I know latin sentence structure is flexible but i am confused. so maybe it says "true power of sight i believe" 2, it literally says "I carry or bear another protector" 3. mortis is genitive so its saying "i am without a life of death" 4. pecto is a verb meaning i comb, but i can also mean i can give a thrashing so i think this one is saying "i studied i know i can give a thrashing" 5. potentis is genetive so it says " I prepare a hand of power" 6. it says imperium which i'm assuming in this case means power of command and incertus and pulcher are both adjectives so it is just saying "uncertain beautiful power of command" 7. i think this say " I make, I summon, I support" this one makes no sense i have no idea 8. this says "i long to be allowed to be couragous" or something like that
Evocation: "Incertus, Pulcher, Imperio" = "Uncertain, beautiful things, I command" Enchantment: "Cupio, Virtus, Licet" = "I want, excellence, allowed to me" Necromancy: "Vita, Mortis, Careo" = "Life, and death, I am without" Divination: "Scio, Didici, Pecto" = "I know, for I have studied, with my mind" Conjuration: "Facio, Voco, Ferre" = "This I do, I call, to bring you forth" Abjuration: "Manus, Potentis, Paro" = "A hand, powerful, I prepare" Illusion: "Veritas, Credo, Oculos" = "The truth, I believe, with my eyes" Alteration: "Praeses, Alia, Fero" = "Protecting, another, I bring this forth"
Do you have incantations for the first Baldur's Gate? The first installment had more powerful sounding incantations. Some of them were down-right terrifying.
+Allan Mardle Yes , 1 male and 1 female casting sound but divine and arcane casters use different " tone " and say some of the words different from each other. I can give you example . Listen 0:40 - 0:43 and 1:16 - 1:20 and notice how she says it different ( I'm sorry i dont remember which one is divine and which one is arcane for female ) 2:35 - 3:23 is male divine caster's voice ( druid , ranger , paladin , cleric ) and 3:23 - 4:00 is arcane caster ( mage , sorcerer ) Divine caster's voice also includes enemies like shamans , dragons , demogorgon but im not sure about demons/devils .
I like the BG2 Chanting-Sounds, but its sad, that they dont took the BG1 sounds. In BG1 the chanting was a fantasy language and not latin, which fits totally better into the forgotten realms.
You really gonna complain about this? 99.99999% of people would never know this is Latin first off. Second its amazing and actually really cool they went to this length rather than GOOOGGOOOGAAGAGA. But you probably watch critical role so no wonder you have awful taste.
much more immersive though, instead of 1 female 1 male voice 1 or 2 clips per school of magic we have like 3+ per spell all voiced by individual characters. multiple hours of voicelines just for spell chants.
