Come join us for a Balkan Food Review in Ljubljana, Slovenia at restaurant Čevabdžinica Sarajevo '84 as we share our impressions trying Bosnian food for the first time. One of the most exciting things for us as we travel through Slovenia and down to Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro is that we'll have ample opportunity to try many different kinds of Balkan food for the first time. Our overall impressions of Bosnian food at this restaurant is that we loved it and want to try even more. With Mostar as a confirmed destination we'll be visiting in the near future we're keen to sample as many things as possible.
Balkan Food List: (Bosnian Cuisine that we tried)
1) Bosnian red wine: rdeče vino blatina
2) Bosnian beans and sausages: prebranec s sudžukico
3) Bosnian pita and meat: čevapčiči
4) Bosnian stuffed red pepper: pečena paprika
5) Bosnian cheese bread rolls: bosanske pide or burek

Balkan Food Review - Our first impressions trying Bosnian Food in Ljubljana, Slovenia Video Transcript:
It is time for lunch. We are still here in Ljubljana and today we've decided to have Balkan cuisine. We found a restaurant called Sarajevo 84. Apparently it specializes in Bosnian food and have we already mentioned that we're kicking off our trip through the Balkans in about a week's time. Hmmm. Haha.
Now would be a good time to mention it. It is a good way to announce it with Balkan food. I can't say I've ever had Balkan food before. I don't really know what to expect but I've been like glancing over at other people's plates and you know nearby tables and everything looks really good. It looks like it is meat heavy. Lots of bread. We've ordered I think like 5 different dishes and we'll see what arrives because we didn't even know what the names meant.
The wine is here and Sam is having the Rdeče Vino Blatina I believe.
This is the one dish I really wanted to try. It is basically beans and sausages served in a ceramic bowl.Let me find it on the menu first. I believe it is prebranec s sudžukico. Either way it is beans and sausage.
This next one may be called čevapčiči or something similar. Yeah. And check it out. It is basically grilled meat rolls in a flatbread. Alright, time to take a bite of this and I like to eat with my hands.
Moving on to dish number three. We've got ourselves some roasted red peppers and I believe this is called pečena paprika maybe. Let's hope I got that right.
And yeah, it looks like it has got some chunks of garlic there. That looks really good. That is really nicely presented I have to say.
This right here would be the Bosanske Pide which means which is the Bosnian pide. Yes. The Bosnian bread. And we ordered the one with cheese. Oh yeah. And this is very different from the Turkish one we've tried because the Turkish one is shaped more actually it is shaped more like the serving plate. Yeah. Whereas this one is very much round. Yeah. .And these are also wow they're thick.
Dessert is here. We have ordered the tufahija which is an apple and nut dessert. Though right now it is covered in whipped cream.
Time for price point. It came to 23 Euros just slightly over 23 Euros. And that included five food items and two drinks so 7 things in total. I think that was like outstanding value. I would agree. It was really good food & good quality. We're really full so that is a sign of a good meal. We'd recommend coming here for sure.

Pointing to random things on menus and trying them when they come out is one of my favorite ways to experience food and travel. I visited Ljubljana for some time last year and loved it. Now I'm cooking a meal from every country in the world on my blog/youtube channel so this was really fun to watch! I checked out this video because I'm doing Bosnia and Herzegovina this week and wanted some inspiration :)

5:10 - I've actually had this dish before and the Bosnian kind as well! I live in Idaho and in the Boise/Meridian area, there is a significant Bosnian population. They have a restaurant called Sofra's Bosnian Grill and this was one of my favorite dishes. The meat and the fact that the bread itself is dipped in a broth before its grilled - amazing!

Glad you guys liked it!! My family is Bosnian and Croatian so we eat this stuff at home. The Cevapi, I would have taken the lepinja (what we call the bread), broken it off, put 1 cevape inside the piece of bread, some ajvar (red pepper spread) & onions. Btw Audrey, good pronounciation on the pecena paprika! You guys should try Bambus (red wine and coca cola).

Greetings from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Watching this episode was very enjoyable for me, since that restaurant is named after my home town. That "cheese pie" is originally a countryside food, perfect field snack during a long day working on a farm. :D But it is also the most popular food in Balkans, there are many versions of it in many countries around here and it goes by many names. "Ćevapčići" the sausages, is also very popular, and your pronunciation of it was perfect. And about how to eat it properly, both of you got it right. Girls eat with cutlery, boys can't be bothered. xD
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 6 лет назад
Thank you very much! I can see how the cheese pie would be a countryside recipe. It sure has that satisfying quality to it. Oh, how rare that we both were right in the way we eat something ;) We're usually both wrong or only one of us correct...hehe

Hi the bread is called "lepinja" pronunced (le pin ya), the translatin is "sticky bread". The meat čevapčiči is ussually translated "the naked sausage" because it does not have a sausage casing. Čevapčiči from Bosnia are made from beef and lamb combination - no pork, other balkan countries make them from beef and pork combination.

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos Yes, all those foods you had in the Bosnian restaurant are iconic foods in Bulgaria as well. There are slight differences though in flavor and preparation from region to region. By the way I don't think you guys spent much time in Bulgaria the first time round. You only stopped by Sofia for one day or something. You should visit Plovdiv - one of the oldest cities in Europe and European Capital of Culture for 2019. Veliko Turnovo is another great place to visit. It's Bulgaria's old capital if you like ancient fortresses and history. Varna is another beautiful city on Bulgaria's sea coast. And that's only the beginning...

Restaurant staff in the Balkans tend to chill their wine but often not to chill their Coke. The red wine you had, Blatina, stems from Herzegovina, not Bosnia. Bosnia is also a beer-drinking country while Herzegovinians make great wine and prefer it to beer. People in the Balkans like their beans strictly savory - none of your American molasses or brown sugar. Generally speaking, sugar is an unwelcome ingredient in savory dishes there. I'm guessing that Audrey must be the first person in the history of cevapi consumption that cut off a piece with a knife and ate it instead of putting one whole sausage inside a piece of bread (somun) and biting into it that way.

Red wines can be served chilled. This is especially done when they are lighter and young. Often they're fruity.

I don't get the fuss about chilled wine. In Hungary too red wine is chilled while white wine comes at room temperature, those are pretty much the rules.

Hi Sam and Audrey what site do you use to find Air BNB places I have never done it but going to Europe this year We want to going to Paris, Prague , Berlin and Sweden thanks hope you can help
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 6 лет назад
Thanks! Cool to hear. You can start off by going to airbnb dot com and creating a profile. Once you've done that select a city you want to visit and choose your custom preferences (price range, entire apartment or shared, etc) and then move around the map to a location in the city you're most interested in staying. You can zoom in and out. Once you're satisfied with that check out some listings. Generally ones with 4.5 or 5 stars are the best with lots of reviews. Read the comments a bit to see if recent visitors have had a good stay. Once you're sure about it confidently book and have a nice stay.

I love Balkans a lot, have been there several times, however I never really found their cuisine that good, and because of that I mostly stick to more western food when I'm there, which is a bit of a shame. Their meat is mediocre but the bread is really really good. I hope you guys are going to Croatia, definitely the most beautiful country of the Balkans!
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 6 лет назад
Thank you! We'll be traveling in Croatia more than any other country on this trip. We're really excited about it. Good to know about the food. Did you find that it was even more disappointing along coastal touristy spots?
@themeltedchocolate
@themeltedchocolate 6 лет назад
Along coastal touristy spots you really only get maybe three regional dishes plus a lot of seafood, everything else is western food.

@albertslat9119
@albertslat9119 4 года назад
Quit simple with your hands. Čevapi u somunu are a tipe of dish that local people come to eat because they know that they can get messy and enjoy their meal. You take peaces of it and your start eating it with your hands that way your combining all flavours like a peace of somun + a bite of čevap and then its followed by sliced onions. I eat it almost 3 times a week its that good 👌🏻
