His laces broke, which raises the question who is responsible for equipment condition and upkeep? Is it an equipment manager? Is there not a preseason lace check on players who return to camp with an “old” glove? This happened to Hosmer when he was a Padre as well. I’m guessing the Padre culture is that’s it’s up to the player when/if to replace/tighten laces. Perhaps they should have somebody do glove checks for this stuff.

As a guy that played 1st base his entire scholastic career, the webbing on a first baseman's glove is designed to help block the sun on pop-up's while using the webbing to still keep an eye on the ball on the way back down. The only gloves I ever saw that had no webbing at all were pitchers gloves which is understandable as you don't want the hitter seeing you gripping the baseball while it's in your glove and you're facing the hitter.

To make a glove more comfy and long lasting it is common practice to treat the leather, but... the leather strands that tie sheets of leather together can easily be over-treated by using uniform amounts of a compound as one would apply on the larger sheets of leather of a glove... because, the softening of the larger sheets of leather that make them more comfortable will soften leather strands to where they will be more prone to breaking. This is an easy thing to test for one's self. The flip side of the coin is, if the leather strands aren't treated ever, they become brittle and can eventually break apart due to the leather breaking down and drying out... unless you get lucky, sometimes an old glove will dry out perfectly and the leather knot petrifies perfectly (my dad had an old catchers mitt from the 50's and I've never seen another glove like it in terms of quality, comfort, and toughness)...

The moment you take one step past 2nd base (towards 3rd) you then have to retouch the base before going back to 1st. Think of it as if he ran half way to 3rd, he can't just run directly back to 1st, he has to touch 2nd then go to 1st. There’s a Rawlings executive disguised as a Padres equipment manger twirling his mustache right now as Wilson’s stock price tanks.

Don't know if Equipment Manager has any blame. He might have conditioned that glove or laced it at one point but it seems like players take care of gloves themselves. 1B was prob using his gamer from last year or backup. Maybe the new one wasnt broken in enough so he decided to use the older one

I think the laces just got worn and Cronenworth didn't notice. That not something that just happens, they probably had been wearing away all spring training. I'd blame the player, you have to check your equipment periodically to make sure its in good condition. But we sometimes can get lulled into complacency.

What a weird game. That happened to me once, many moons ago. I was playing second. Ball was a line drive and went straight thru the webbing.....and that was a softball game! My favorite glove. I repaired it but I never trusted it ever again....

you would think a major leaguer would be able to afford a decent glove. you would also think staff would check to make sure players werent sill using their lucky t-ball glove.

Webbing of my 1st base mitt broke during a game and I didn’t have a backup fielding glove. Me and the other first baseman shared a glove for the game. We were the only two left handers in the game.

Former highschool first baseman, there are options for the webbing on the first baseman's glove. I preferred his style too because it's easier to break in and more flexible overall. A first baseman's glove is more padded. Those infielder can rip it almost as hard as a pitcher. That rawhide tore. It should be replaced often to avoid what happened here. The equipment manager (I assume the pros have a guy that just works on gloves) missed it being compromised.

I kinda like the idea of a MLB first baseman playing with a glove that is 50 years old and being surprised when it falls apart.

That just didn't go through the hole in the glove it just destroyed the glove webbing. Definitely was either a faulty glove or it's been worn so much was time for a new glove.

The holes are to prevent dirt from messing up the catch on a ground ball. Its why outfielders can have a weaved web without holes. It broke the webbing apart so its not the holes fault

This is like the equipment guy failing his job and someone getting shot. You can see the ball tear through the glove so the binding must have been frayed, brittle, or otherwise compromised. But ultimately, it's up to the guy wearing the glove to do the final check.

That H-webbing is usually rock-solid for not letting balls through, and it provides a deep pocket to maximize retention of the ball. The lace looks like it just breaks at the knots. This looks like a case of insufficient glove maintenance, or perhaps bad luck on some sub-par lacing.

The holes and shape of webbing is mostly preference. Some pockets may feel deeper and pitchers tend to pick more busy/harder to see through webbings. Here though, the webbing ripped. Maybe it would be less likley to rip a baseball size hole if he had a different webbing- like trapeze.

This happened to Vlad Guerrero Jr. twice in less than a month back in 2022. The first time, June 13, Toronto had a ten run lead over Baltimore in the ninth inning, so no real harm done. Different story in Seattle on July 10. Bottom 5, 1 out, bases loaded. Comebacker to pitcher, throws home for second out. Catcher throws to Vladdy, ball goes through webbing, inning continues, runner scores from 2nd, and another run scores before the Jays get out of the inning. No error for Vladdy (scorer can't assume the double play) but those two runs prove fairly important as Seattle ends up winning the game 6-5.

The H style webbing is to assist with Pop-Ups to block the sun. This is why outfielders gloves are this way as well. Also, any brutal fielder on your team is likely wearing a Wilson glove.
