Yeah but what is he going to do for that long? He’s not going to try to win some woman’s heart being that he’s an outlaw. He’s not going to have someone be a threat to him given his comedic demeanor would be ruined. So idk what story you could tell. He can’t just ride around from bar to bar for an hour.
@@samwatson8108 not if you want to make your money back. That’s like arguing and alien vs predator movie should be an hour and a half of predators fighting aliens. That will work for some people but not most.
You know people say Bugs Bunny is a really psychopathic cartoon character, despite his upbeat charismatic demeanour. I think you could say the same for ol Buster Scruggs over here also!
I wonder if that's an homage to the movie The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (Paul Newman) in which he shoots an outlaw with a shotgun and opens up a hole in the guy all the way through.
What's interesting is that while Buster goes in ostensibly asking for a drink, he leaves without taking one, which makes us wonder about his motivations here. Notice how he escalates the situation so that it has to become violent and how cheerful he is about the fact. Buster Scruggs is portrayed as the good guy both through his narrative, white clothes and the comic dust but the reality is something different. He's a merciless killer who takes joy in provoking violence, which he is expertly able to inflict.
It was the BARTENDER first and then the scruffy guy who escalated that scenario, not Buster. Mr. Scruggs did nothing but very eloquently, and in old fashion, DEFEND himself.
@@Eazy-ERydernah man...he went in to pick a fight. Could have drank water from his canteen. He went in to a bar and asks for a drink and never has a sip even though he could have drank up the whole bar after taking them all out. The insults and the grin on his face just emphasizes he was there for killing.
Honestly I was wondering the same thing. However I don’t think he would of shot anyone if they didn’t brand a weapon and that’s including the bartender… Buster just don’t give a F and does what he wants
"I'd like me a splash of whiskey to worsh the trail dust off'n my gullet and keep ma singing voice in fettle" is my favourite line of this entire movie
I have not ever seen this movie nor know who this man is outside of clips. I LOVE his demeanor and the part where he pats the dust off him in one go and leaves behind his shape was pure GOLD!
This movie truly SUCKS, imho, except for the first 15 minutes. Scruggs was dead by then and the entire movie was thoroughly depressing & anticlimactic from that point on. The title of the movie is misleading as it makes you think the entire movie is about Buster, but it's not. A HUGE disappointment. Buster was an amazing character and could have easily carried the entire movie but the writer killed him off in the first 15 minutes. Dumbass move if you ask me.
You actually saw everything there is about Buster just in the clips! You're not missing anything either, the rest of the movie was a huge disappointment after Buster died.
That was him quicksaving. Pretty sure he went through tjat fight several times. On that last one he just decided to call it good enough, rather than reloading again just to get that last guy
@@realcritical-kr2dd are you really questioning that when this man literally got shot in the head, continues to speak, and his spirit starts singing? Surely you don’t know if a movie is playing fiction or fact and know how to enjoy a film 😂
I actually love the little foreshadowing in this scene. The first and most obvious is that he kills the first guy by shooting him in the head just like what happens to him later. The second one though is when he talks about the last person crawling out of the bar. We just think it is funny how he'll leave him to the dessert critters but he mentions it being sloppy shooting on his part. Hinting at maybe he isn't as good as he used to be and there is room for someone to overtake him. This was such a good story and character.
@@wealldieatthehandsoflovedones Each vignette had its place and its own charm, but I'm still wishing for a Buster Scruggs prequel movie more than I am "what did the prospector do previously... oh yeah, I bet he prospected elsewhere before..." ^_^
"The Coup-de-Grace I will leave to the wolves and Gila monsters, Adios Amigo!!" Best parting line ever, in any movie. That-there is some fancy writing, ol' son!
googled it for you just incase "A coup de grâce is a death blow to end the suffering of a severely wounded person or animal. It may be a mercy killing of mortally wounded civilians or soldiers, friends or enemies, with or without the sufferer's consent. Wikipedia"
This was the best part of the scene, as looking back, they were showing that Buster Scruggs ain't as good as he used to be. Something that doesn't really sink in until the end when he was no longer the best.
I love it to you know Buster was just itching for a shootout lol.....if they were polite this wouldn't have happened.....just goes to show dont judge a book by its cover.
@@ethlvi The movie is made up of several short stories. Five of them, if I remember correctly, and each one is independent of the others. The entire movie is called the "Ballad of Buster Scruggs" but the character is only present in the first story. Edit: Just double-checked, there are 6 stories in the movie.
@@topgrain I am telling you man... for the last couple of times I was working in my yard and I was pulling out some weed, and I was talking to myself in that same tone and accent, "They's outlaaaaws" lol Its addictive.
We're all talking about the scary grin he gives to the barkeep, but for me it's the look he gives the 4 other guys just before that. It's almost like it's a clean slate, "Hey there, fellas!"
I swear to god, this segment is the best. Buster has such a folksy kindness to him that contrast to how fast and brutal he is. And the ending just gets me.
This segment was kinda too simple to be good, entertaining character sure but not much else. The wagon train segment and the gold digger segment (gotta love Tom Waits) were the best. The Liam Neeson segment I didn't like at all. The rest were good.
@@flybeep1661 I rather enjoyed Tim Blake Nelson as Buster Scruggs, and like many would love to see a full length feature. The gold digger segment was alright, but not nearly as entertaining as the Buster Scruggs character. I concur the Neeson segment wasn't the best. I honestly would have preferred him in the pots and pans short.
Yes, the opening skit was by far the only worth watching. I tried making it through the rest of this movie and always struggled after this guy vanished...
It would appear the "they," are as ruthless and evil as the iron twirling, trigger pulling, death dealing "hero" and scoundrels -- who may or may not be worthy of a drink at a bar, or a shave and a hair cut, or the right to draw even one more breath, before some pencil lead catches up to them to air condition their hat with a little ketchup ...
Christopher Ryan It’s actually a movie. Don’t know why it’s called the ballad of Buster Scruggs though, on account of him being one of many stories in the anthology.
...actually, that's kinda the way life was in the wild west. Might meet an interesting hombre, but guy'll catch a bullet the next day and be six feet under.
Buster Scruggs is one of my favorite characters ever. His constant, unflappable smile and his folksy way of carrying himself are so charming, so disarming... He's like Saitama; someone you wouldn't take seriously, until they started getting serious, and then it's far too late and you're screwed
Lewandowski lmao if that’s all you took away from red dead then you are an idiot. I would say that RDR2 shows extremes of both sides. Obviously you didn’t see the annoying feminist SD, it’s satirical representation of 3rd wave Feminism. Most of Rock Star’s games are satirical representations of American society, which is why I Love their games, it shows the stupidity of both extremes, which makes me an person with moderate political beliefs feel less isolated.
When Buster walks through the saloon doors and pats the dust off, love how it forms the perfect shape of his outline before dissipating, Classic Coen Bros attention to their cinematic style. Such a strong and brilliantly performed character, they could easily devote a whole movie to Busters previous exploits and it would be a huge success!
Both the dust silhouette and the beam of light (through the gunshot wound) are perfect examples of VFX looney tune gags. Someone pointed out that buster Scruggs is pretty much bugs bunny, and now when I watch him in this short it makes sense.
ChrisTtheCarpenter Yeah I don't care how long it would take, I would really enjoy a full movie with this character as long as it mantains the same quality as the shortfilm.
ChrisTtheCarpenter - yes totally that was the most fun character. I was sad when he got killed so early in the film, but the way he looked at his hat to realize he was dead, and sprouted wings and flew to heaven was cool.
Love how he goes in asks for whiskey, shoots them all dead, and departs without ever having taken a drink; the whiskey was just the excuse he needed to initiate a confrontation.
No, he wanted whiskey. They started the confrontation. There are a number of reasons why he left without drinking, one of which is that taking the whiskey after shooting the barman dead would make him a thief. And Buster Scruggs is not a liar, coward, or thief.
@@jadedandbitter I hadn't thought of that! I think that's one reason why Buster Scruggs is such a complex and interesting character. He is labelled a misanthrope and seems to sell us this idea that he does have a very low opinion of humanity all together since they all seem brutish and violent. But for Buster, I think that equally he tries to live by his own moral code and honor - he surrenders his pistols even though he could have kept the concealed ones and never kills anyone who isn't threatening to kill him first. Yet, his gleeful abandon at taking delight in such encounters doesn't put him quite at "honorable" imo.
The guy that he failed to kill that crawled out the door was some foreshadowing that Buster was losing his edge a bit which eventually led to his downfall. Like everyone else I believe we need a full Buster Scruggs movie. To let this character only be known in this short film is criminal though it leaves much to the imagination and any movie would no doubt fall short of expectations...but one can draem.
@@mungo7136 I don't speak French, obviously, but whatever makes you feel better about yourself there buddy. Ironically the word ended up being similar to "grace", ha ha ha.

“Well don’t let my white duds and pleasant demeanor fool you. I too have been known to violate the statutes of man, and not a few of the laws of the Almighty.” Such a Coen Bros. Line 😂😂😂
There's a lot to love in this scene but for some reason the little detail of the light pouring through the gaps in the wall also shining through the bullet hole in the bartender is what really makes it for me. Such a fun little bit.
Well, it could be about a happy cowboy falling in love with a girl, only to get her killed in some kind of avoidable confrontation. And now there he is, getting into every confrontation, hoping someone better would outgun him, only to meet her. Screw me, I am bad at telling stories. 😣😣
anyone whos read a episodic book from the 1880s onwards knows what the cohen brothers were going for. buster scruggs is the perfect charismatic character that so many people want more of, and many, including myself appreciate how underutilized he actually is. a man of charisma and a strong lesson against getting comfortable in causing trouble.
@@NoahSpurrier my favorite by far is "wild animals i have known" i have a first edition print, sadly some of the pages have come loose... but ive still have them all. its a collection of stories about animals and sometimes how they interacted with people, but mostly with each other. it was written by an outdoorsman, conservationist, and founder of the boy scouts.
@@NoahSpurrier I hope you enjoy it! also the story reminds me of buster scruggs because the first story is easily the most known, that of "lobo, king of currampaw" and his wolfpack. but the stories of ragglylug, silverspot and a couple others are still great... even if less memorable.
Just goes to show do not underestimate anyone lol....and I just know Buster was hoping it would go down like that just to satisfy his trigger finger hahaha.
It would be overkill. We know how he lived and how he died. Anything else after the original short film would just be a contrived money grab and would ultimately be incredibly disappointing. Don't get me wrong I love this character and if they had of made a full length film about him it probably would have been incredible. But part of this short films appeal is that he is such a BIG, OVER THE TOP character and you only get a little time with him. It is overwhelming in almost every aspect but it's complete. Any of the questions you could really ask about him are more or less answered by his actions. He wouldn't seek settling down with a wife because he loves the gunslinger/singer lifestyle, he is honorable at least by his code which he won't break, he is fair, he is clearly not a pushover, he is actually happy with his life and lifestyle, he wants to be the best or to die with honor in pursuit of being the best. After seeing this I would hate seeing some buster Scruggs "mismatched/forced partnership that starts rocky but then they become best friends" buddy cop crap or some pointless origin story or, ugggh, a buster Scruggs romcom......🤮
@@cactusmanofdestiny3708 "It appears to do, yes" is now one of my favourite movie quotes. I don't even know which movie this is, but I will have to go and find and watch it. That was some fancy shooting!
I think Buster Scruggs is more Chaotic Order than lawful anything. He went into the bar, disrupting; ordering the chaos in line. He was disrespected. So he murdered just about everyone with smile, opening the door letting the guy get away. Broke the 4th wall. Didnt even get his whiskey, that he asked for because he killed the bartender. Despite that there was also whiskey on the table of the guys he gunned down. It was a structure to his chaos.
@@DirtCheapFU Fair enough .. however Buster follows his own set of rules. He did not just enter the saloon and gun everyone down (although I suspect that was his intention all along) He asks his opponent if he wants a count or not and he has a certain ritual that he follows before, during and after the killings.
What blows my mind is that of you hear the actor's natural accent you'd almost swear it was a different person. A very gifted performer who needs more work, but not until the strike is over.
I like how they specifically added a subtle visual effects where when he pats the dust off himself it leaves an impression. Adds to that cartoony effect of the character.
I’d love to watch a full movie about Buster. He’d be one hell of an interesting antagonist, all cheery and wicked fast and often breaking the 4th wall.
@@ravijain9909 I've never really taken any time to watch westerns, spaghetti or otherwise, but I really appreciate you offering up that title over a year ago because I'm having a wonderful time watching it right now. 1:50 you know it may not look like it, but when he said "sloppy shooting on my part" it was one of the many subtle hints that he wasn't going to have the upper hand much longer...
Would get old, I promise you that. The film's already stunning as an anthology, no need wishing for 2 hours of just buster which is guaranteed to overdose you with him.
How would they fill in several hours of a real life Bugs Bunny character into one cohesive plot? The Coen Brothers would have more success in just making some sort of modern, demented real life Looney Tunes with Buster Scruggs as the star.
I wish it was more about Buster, Tom Waits was great, the pan shot guy was funny, but I had no idea idea why I should keep watching the woman or that stump
"The coup de grâce I'll leave to the wolves and Gila monsters." Coup de grâce means: 'The death blow to end the suffering of one who is mortally wounded.' Buster Scruggs is spot-on with words too.
@@_Aieo more accurately, finishing off someone mortally wounded, ie: someone being shot by firing squad and the initial volley didn't kill you outright and the officer in charge of the firing squad takes a pistol and shoots you in the heart or back of the head to finish the guy off.
The Coen Brothers love mashing uo two genres. The Big Lebowski was like a 1940s Socal noir private eye movie, but with an affable, gently clueless stoner as a hero instead of Phillip Marlowe. Buster Scruggs drops the cheerful singing cowboy of Roy Rogers movies into bloodthirsty spaghetti western territory, and is totally awesome. I desperately want a full sequel.
@@lickakaka I disagree. Sun Tzu said, “Make the enemy prepare defenses in places you aren’t. Appear where you are unexpected.” It take that to mean, sneak up behind your enemy and really make them feel that boner!
Buster Scruggs MUST be made into a movie! 🙏🏻 The folksiness contrasted with rapid brutality is a stunning juxtaposition. (Not to mention his pleasant demeanour great smiling singing voice and white duds).
Every bit of his performance is great. I think my favorite moment of all is when he insults everybody in the bar and indulges in a goofy little smile, as if to say, "What are you all gonna do about that, huh?"
Satya Patel of course it was planned rockstar releases sell more than big budget Hollywood movies and not to consider them with a million dollar investment would be retarded
Well the Coen Brothers have always loved making westerns and released them without much regard for what’s in the zeitgeist, so while with anyone else heading the film I’d agree it was planned, with them it could very well be pure coincidence. Either way Red Dead is dope and so is Buster Scruggs and we all get to enjoy them, so everyone involved takes a W
