Ballasting Model Railway Track the Easy Way

In this video I present a system I have designed to speed up the tedious task of laying ballast to model railway track. I show the CAD processes employed to develop the system and the final results which show just how quickly ballast can be laid, and importantly, tidied before gluing down.
2023 edit: Since this video was uploaded I have developed this product further, and it is now available from www.makeitminiature.co.uk, along with my range of turnout actuators.

Echoing the thoughts and comments of many, what brilliant, simple idea. I think the big benefit you have is looking at the various tasks with a new set of eyes and not being fixated on the ‘we’ve always done it like that’ approach. Well done and thank for for ALL your great videos.

Brilliant and practical solution. This is similar to how I ballasted my recent layout, almost discovered using controlled vacuum by accident (ie vacuum collector with spacer), but the hardware was not as elegant as your solution and required precise hand control as was too heavy. If you ever sell or produce the 3D prints on shape ways or other please let us know.

Hi James, I really think you should be on the blower (or should that be the "sucker"? No pun intended!) to Peco / Hornby straight away with this before they pinch your design! As for an improvement, if it could clean up the shoulder of the ballast edge at the same time, leaving nice, clean straight lines it would be perfect - possibly with some sort of "Fence" at each side of the attachment which directed the suction to the edges? Imagine just having to dump the ballast onto the track without having to take particular care to spread it evenly, give it a quick once over with your tool, and all done. I think you're on to a winner here.

Thank you Paul. I have designed a version with a built it hopper/shoulder former, which I'm sure would work very well indeed. The set-up shown in the video works really well without any extra 'clutter' and is great for other clean-up jobs too. My thoughts are that this ought to be available with two 'heads', one as you describe and the one shown in the video.

Hi James. I rather like this idea and also the shoulder former you mentioned in your reply to Paul James. I have a few questions: have your ideas progressed at all? You mentioned that it also worked on N gauge track; exactly the same tool? Although yet to start ballasting, I have bought a mini handheld vacuum cleaner for ballast and static grass. I don't know if all mini handheld vacuum cleaners are a standard size, but could you design/build an adaptor for the minis? Look forward to hearing from you.

From what i have seen, this is one of the best idea's in model rail ballasting i have come accross. Please carry on with this. I live in Holland and i am a member of a model rail club and most of my fellow club members hate ballasting. I think with this idea you will bring even more enjoyment to the hobby

I don't think you need to think about taking your invention further i would be applying for a patent on it now, what with your other abilities regarding model buildings etc which could be made in kit form in no time you be giving up your day job where it sounds like your talents are not appreciated, to be very much appreciated by all us modellers

Brilliant! Especially because it's such a simple concept. (I want one, NOW!) You must make sure your idea is protected. You could, perhaps sell the software/program, which would give you some sort of return, without consuming your time. I, too, have a daughter with a lively, creative mind - she has been a constant delight to me, as I'm sure your daughter is to you. I think you have done probably the best thing by getting it seen on RU-vid to get the general feeling of modellers. Its a job many peopke hate and put off doing particularly in N gauge, ballast hoppers became and still are very popular, but yours easier and quicker as you demonstrated. If you have your own 3D printer produce some kits and let the big boys in railway modelling promote them. Good luck with your project James.

It's a superb idea, and product. I'm sure it'd sell, depending on price, I'd buy one. If required a version for collecting excess scenics, flock, static grass, would be most saleable.

Hi James...just had another thought on using any `hoover' of any power/suction...Just looked at my hoover and there is a small slide switch on the pipe extension which you slide open/shut to increase/decrease the suction. You could incorporate a similar switch on the pipe section just prior to the flexible pipe connection. Then possibly any power hoover would work by adjusting sliding open/closing the slide switch. (it certainly works on my hoover). 2. You could also put a slide-on mini brush at the tip to give a final dust off as the hoover is dragged along the track. 3. I like the size of the ballast collector as well.. Maybe a similar size ballast dispenser could be attached through a splayed tip (as your collector). Hope you can follow my gobbledegook James. Very interesting James, the ballasting of my track is a task I’m not sure I’m looking forward too. I have one of those track ballaster box things that sit on the track but your hoover attachment looks like something that could save a lot of time and by the looks of it makes a really neat job. I’d certainly be interested in one if you start producing them, cheers John

Morning James, what a brilliant idea, and I've been reading some of your other comments and some people have suggested shoulder and other mods , I must say I like the simplicity of the original design, it looks versatile. Could be used for loads of clean up on the railway. The main thing for me would be cost! If you're only just starting out then maybe you could invest in something like this, if like me your layout is mainly done and only a bit of alterations to do you would need to think about it. It would all come down to cost. Your very lucky to be able to print your own bits, and what a great inventive mind you have. Very well done. Hi James. You can put washable PVA on a length of greaseproof paper. Put the track down on top and sprinkle the ballast. Leave to dry overnight. Turn the track upside down and the loose ballast will fall off.

Bugger! I invented (utilised) a cyclone (using a pop bottle) for my vac to collect ballast, years ago! I recently (a few months ago) had a go at 3D printing a tee tube vac end too! It's not the first time someone has brought to market a product that I had thought of years ago! Richard of DCC concepts will attest to being a better businessman than me! lol

¡Hola buenas tardes James! Having spent the best part of half an hour practicing my very first ballast laying (on a small diorama test piece) my jaw dropped as I watched the first video clip you showed. I say this as, the half hour I spent ballasting was 90% vacuuming-up and, relaying various trial amounts of ballast material. Ignoring the issue of the shoulders being tidy, the fact that your system can actually remove just the excess top-of-the-sleeper ballast, has to be a winner. Should you find a way to provide this equipment commercially, I would definitely be adding my name to the preorder list! Brilliant James and, so well demonstrated. Un saludo. Gary

Thank you Gary. I've tried this now in various configurations, and believe me, this simple first-effort is by far the best. Modifications to produce a tidy ballast shoulder have worked well, but hinder the wider use of the tool as a vacuum. If I could only find a way to get the idea out to the masses I'm sure it would be a winner. It needs to be dirt cheap though, and therein lies the problem. It may be that the best solution is simply to make the files available for 3d printing at home. I tried Shapeways and it was way too expensive. Thanks for the support though, it's much appreciated. :)

Get a patent or something to protect your idea. This is so brilliant, such a time-saver and more importantly easy to use everyone will want one. I know i'd have one tomorrow. I've got a boatload od ballasting to do and this wouks same me hours and hours. Well done.

First of all I want to say "Great idea". To add to this I must say that I personally find ballasting therapeutic. It also marks an end to the construction of a section of the layout and the beginning of the 'tarting up' and the final stages of the section. Having said that, I love gadgets and would probably buy one if you intended on selling them. This brings me to the next point. I do 3d printing and with the sim to sell and unless you can make lots of an object in a short space of time it is not viable to sell and make money from it unless that is the product is so unique and people really want to buy it irrespective of cost. So yes, brilliant idea, very simple and like mist simple things not much to go wrong. If you do intend selling them let me know and I will buy one. Regards Geoff.

Thank you Geoff. I think that 3d printing these to sell myself will not be possible. I work full-time and just don't have the spare time available. I am considering looking into crowd-funding to see if there's a way to make these cheaply available to all. I'll keep you posted.

@@BexhillWest I know the feeling too well. I myself am working full time and when I get home I can often be up to the small hours 3d printing and generating stock for when the exhibitions and shows resume so I can sell the things I have made. At some point I need more than 3 hours sleep a night.

The first thing I would do is to take out a patent on your device which I think is brilliant, When I saw the demonstration I could not believe my eyes when you sucked up the ballast material and yet the ballast between the rails stayed in place. Looks like a good idea, a couple of things come to mind:- 1. can you attach to any vacuum cleaner with a hose or will more powerful cleaners suck out the contents of the collection hopper and weaker ones not have enough power ? If it will work with multiple different cleaners then all you need is some sort of universal adapter 2. I think I saw a couple of rail width grooves in the nozzle so do you need different sizes for different gauges ? 3. Will this work with lighter materials such as flock ? If so this could be a really useful tool for anyone working in any type of scenery not just model railways 4. Maybe a couple of extra tools for getting into tight locations might be useful ? You might want to design to use some sort of easily obtainable standard size container as the collector

Thanks David, you always leave a positive comment! 1. This works on a standard domestic vacuum cleaner. I've designed it to connect to my Numatic Henry, but I'm sure it would fit most. An adaptor ring would enable it to fit just about any vacuum I'm sure. 2. I designed this for OO, but tested it on N gauge too and it worked just as well which was a surprise! 3. My thoughts exactly, I think it would be perfect for lifting static grass. However to do which I think a filter inside the collector head might need to be added as the lightweight fibres would not drop from the cyclone separator. 4. I've already designed a couple...watch this space. :) Finally, the collection head will fit a wide range of containers as is. Thanks for the feedback, it's much appreciated! James

Hi James I think this is great idea in our club we usually have a ballasting night that way a boring job is dealt with with loads of spoon tapping an brush work to get it done. My only question is when are you going into production with this thing, I think you have a winner. Regards Alan Massie

Excellent idea James, how about elongating the suction sole over the total width of the track including the shoulder? The outer flow of the suction should have the slightest impact as your flow diagram showed. Haven’t come to laying track yet, but when I do, I will certainly apply ballast with your method. Also, your Mary Poppins reference is greatly appreciated, as is your short story about your daughter. Truly saw her in the hardware store with those doubtful eyes kids can share, your narration on the surprise of the shared success following all the more heartfelt. Thanks for sharing.

Hi James, I will be ballasting a decent sized layout in about February 2022 & I would certainly buy this as a product to help the ballasting process. You should market it yourself or sell the design to a manufacturer as soon as possible! I hope you make some money out of your work. Well done.

Yes, excellent video James. It's a great idea. Looking into the future though,what would stop us automating the whole ballast laying set-up into a fully functioning model? I'm thinking of the laying, profiling and "wetting" of the ballast by a series of trucks hauled by say an old class 47. Food for thought eh. Keep up the good work, your articles are most interesting.

Brilliant concept and execution James. You could add a `reverse' snow plough guide (perhaps a snap on/slip fit to the funnel to make the shoulder clean up all in one pass. Find a bulk builder and sell this `GEM'. Thankyou

James you never cease to amaze me, that is not a good design it's a brilliant design my friend. Using a hopper with it you will have fantastic results along with it being very quick to use. It is totally amazing and like everyone else I would love to have one for use on my N gauge layout. I will try to remember to mention this fantastic gizmo in my next video. You are truly onto something, at the moment only for use with ballast laying on a model railway but knowing you you will very likely find other uses for it, it is certainly not a daft idea. At a model railway show it would sell like hot cakes. You should think about taking a patent out on it, I think that's what it is called before some nasty person steals your brilliant idea. Thank you Chris, I though of you when I tested the idea on some N gauge track. Although this was designed for OO it worked just as well on N gauge. I suspect it will work well on O gauge too. I have registered the design, so we will see if it's possible to take it further. All the best, James

That is pretty cool but you can achieve the same results just as quick with a ballast spreader and a spoon/brush handle. The ballast spreader on the same piece of track takes about 10-15 seconds to put down, then you just rush a brush through the center track, then take the brush (or a spoon) and gently tap the rails. This will remove the ballast pieces from the sleepers. You will still get ballast pieces back on the sleepers once you spray the track with water, then water-pva mix. Might be why the idea was abandoned?

Wow just come across this and as I have in excess of 200 ft of track to ballast I think it is brilliant. I would definitely be in the market for such a handy device. Have you thought about starting your own cottage industry, certainly you could put me down for one.

Hi James. I'm convinced. It does a fantastic job. However the success or failure of this as a commercial product is the retail price. Firstly I would copyright it. Secondly I would approach a manufacturer say WWS to make it under licence and pay you a %. The problem I see is a ballast machine like static grass applicators is that they are used once as the layout is set up then they have a tendency to gather dust on the shelf. So overall they work out to be rather expensive. Its personally why i'm still debating whether to buy an applicator. Yet. But its definitely worth further exploration.

I couldn't agree more Gordon. I think a product like this should be available very cheaply, sub £10, after all it's just two bits of plastic and a pipe!. So far I'm not having much luck in finding a suitable manufacturer. :(

Maybe it could also have some additional tools/heads, so it could also double as a cleaner for computers, keyboards and even the modeller’s workbench (that way, any precious screws, etched parts, etc., could be recovered from the intermediate ‘pot’ rather than end up in the main vacuum cleaner?

This is the second time I have watched this video and this device continues to fascinate me. I have one question and this is it. Our vacuum cleaner as a variable setting knob which controls the suction power of the cleaner, so can I assume that the suction setting would need to be set at the lowest suction possible. Thank you Greg, I'm using a standard 'Henry' vacuum cleaner set on 'low', although it works just the same when switched to the 'high' setting. It really does make an irksome task rather fun. I reckon a yard of track could easily be ballasted and vacuumed ready for glue in less than a minute. Thanks for watching (again) :) James

Hi James , as others have said a Brilliant Idea I reiterate what others have said in the comments get the Idea Patented before some Cowboy starts production themselves , could this be used for removing excess static grass instead of the " Lets put a sock over the end of the Vac " method because if it could I can see its appeal to War Gamer's and Diorama hobbyists . Looks a clever, simple design. In your demo, it did look a bit like witchcraft that it only removed the excess ballast! Interesting that you said the idea has been around for ages, so it's curious that it's never been developed. Maybe because modellers are inately conservative (with a small c), and there's not been the impetus to move on? Though the ballast hoppers are, I think, a relatively recent introduction, or at least I don't remember them 30/40 years ago. Presumably, as well as delivering consistent suction across the head, it's important to be able to control the suction too? N gauge ballast would be finer (and therefore, at least to my non technical mind, lighter) than OO, and O gauge would be coarser and heavier. I don't think you'll make your fortune and be able to retire on the proceeds from this, unfortunately. Wonder if it would be worth talking to the makers of the ballast hoppers, or other similar firms, to see if they would be interested in producing under licence?

Thank you Andrew, You raise some interesting points. The device does indeed just remove the excess ballast from above the sleepers. I've tried it with fine ballast and a coarser grades and the effect is the same. If raised above the track by the rail height it lifts only the loose ballast, but if pushed directly into a pile it will lift all in front of it. Although the principle has been around for some time, my innovation really has been the collecting head and the design optimization of the nozzle. In the video I'm using N gauge Gaugemaster ballast on OO track, as that it what I plan to use at Bexhill West. But the system worked just as well with each of the grades of ballast which I have to hand on both OO and N gauge. I don't have any O gauge track, but I'm confident that it would work the same. There is no need to control the suction as that variable is controlled by a vortex generator within the collecting head. I didn't detail that part in the video as it's a bit technical and I didn't want to bore the viewers. Especially, as I don't really know the technical jargon for doing so! I agree the idea isn't going to make me rich, but I am considering how I might be able to make a little from the idea with a view to being able to invest a little back into the channel so that I can make better videos. The design is registered so licencing may be an option, although I've no idea how to make that happen! :) Thanks for watching, James

It's brilliant in its simplicity - which is the key to all good design, is it not? Please take this to the next level. I noticed the two small indentations which looked like OO/HO gauge track so I was interested to hear you say you had tested it in N gauge. Presumably those indents are intended to keep the head centralised on the rail. Versions for other track gauges would be easy enough to produce would they not OR for the purchaser to modify to suit? [ I have HOm (12mm) gauge track] I would like to buy one, even a prototype. Keep safe and take care.

Hi John, I think there's always an elegance to simplicity, which is what I always aim for. I've experimented with this some more today and its seems to work perfectly with different grades of ballast, and sand too. I would have every confidence in recommending the prototype for 12mm track. Just come across this and it is a great idea. Any chance you will share the STL files?. I also fly RC planes, there is a company that design planes you can 3D print. They are called 3D labprint it might be worth talking to them about their business model and how they go about selling the files etc needed to print the planes. Either that or you could publish them here for free 🤓
