Sometimes, it’s just time to hang it up. I’m arguing in favor of retirement for these 7 bands, either from recording new music, touring, or BOTH.

I feel another band that could be on this list is 30 Seconds to Mars, which has slowly become The Jared Leto Experience. First two albums were great, This Is War is pretty decent though the overuse of the "oh's" and "woah's" from either Jared or this crowd of people he bought into the studio drags it down a bit, fourth was mediocre, but their fifth is disastrous. America also sounds like a desperate attempt to be mainstream but fails, and they lost multiple fans like me after that album and Tomo leaving the band. They were one of my all time favorite bands a decade ago but quickly fell out of love with them after their bad releases. Jared's ego is just as big as Adam Levine's, and why does he need to treat his fanbase like a cult? And does he really think that he is Jesus? 30STM should just retire if they are not gonna live up to their full potential and I think Jared should just focus on his acting.

I only really ave thoughts on Coldplay, Maroon 5, and Weezer. I think Coldplay should have moved to occasional singles and touring after A Head Full Of Dreams, Maroon 5 should have gone out after V, all 5 of those albums were great, but after that it went downill fast (after that, I did like 2 or 3 red pill blues songs, and Jordi had a handful of keepers, I still listen to lost & lovesick because though not as substantial, they remind me of Overexposed and V, and Memories, Beautiful Mistakes, and Nobody's Love, were all good, and I kinda like cant leave you alone but posthumous features not intended by the artist make me feel a lil icky). As for Weezer? The issue is they have almost re-booted their career 15 fucking albums in, with ok human, van weezer, and sznz, so I think were going further

as someone who’s favorite band is Linkin Park, i’d argue they should also retire completely. while i hope they continue releasing 20 year anniversary box sets for every album like they did with Hybrid Theory, it just wouldn’t feel the same without Chester’s presence. they could always rework unreleased tracks with Chester’s vocals into new material, but i’d prefer them to just keep releasing demos and unreleased tracks from album eras

I would add KISS to the list. They haven't released new songs in ages. And just like what was mentioned about Angus running around in a school boy outfit when he's in his late 60s, the same can be applied to 70 something year old Paul & Gene and their replacements in facepaint and leather. The sad thing is that they have had several " last tours" or " end of the road" tours yet they still roll on.
@MusicMasterTasmania
@MusicMasterTasmania Год назад
KISS should have called it quits in 2018 when they resorted to having Paul Stanley lip sync to get through each show. They need to wrap up this 'final tour' real soon. There are some EMBARRASSING clips out there of Paul's voice horrifically cracking even when talking!

I agree that kiss should retire they've been around long enough have a lot of Records and they've told around the world many times over I think that kiss has nothing left to prove they done it all pretty much and besides they're getting up in age I don't think they can do a long tour at their age in the 70s do maybe for a one-off show somewhere right now pretty much I think they're calling it a day they deserve it pretty much

System of a Down is one of my favorite bands since 2007 so i feel your pain of never getting the excitement of a new album release by them. SOAD nowadays is the very definition a nostalgia act. I saw The Who in May of 2022 and I went because the ticket was purchased for me. To be honest though, I was a little worried especially after seeing Roger sing on You Tube and, of course, his voice is nowhere near what it used to be and rightly so because of his age. But I was surprised on how good a show it was. I think today it's a matter of choice and opinions (just like on this channel) that vary wildly on whether bands should keep performing because of age and / or no original members left. Hard to say. I went and saw The Who with only 2 original members, but then again it was free for me. Would I pay top dollar to see REO Speedwagon (no original Members now), Foreigner (one original member, sometimes), Styx (one original Member) or Journey with only one original Member left? Probably not especially with their boring set lists, Journey especially on their 50th Anniversary tour. They're basically playing the same set list as when I saw them when Steve Augeri was at lead vocals. Pretty disheartening especially for the price tag. Time for everyone to retire.

@Christopher Bingham I saw Foreigner during their heyday around 1979-1980 as well as Styx and the Foreigner concert blew away Styx at that time. As far as Styx the debate will forever go on between Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw. Without Dennis the band would never have gotten to where they got without him but I also say that it was a band effort to do what they did until the band self-imploded after 'Kilroy Was Here' was released. As far as REO I've been listening to them since 'Live: You Get What You Play For' and their next albums were stellar (Love 'Nine Lives') but when 'Hi-Infidelity' came out you could see the direction they were heading but I can put that album on and enjoy it. Remember Gary Richrath was instrumental and producer in the making of that album too and as much as he rocked out on previous albums he did write 'In Your Letter'. Been a Journey fan since 'Look Into the Future' came out before Steve Perry. And that band is the worst soap opera ever right now.

I saw Van Halen on their final tour with David Lee Roth and yup, Roth was never a great singer and had gotten worse but it was the show that you went to see because it was a great show. I saw Kansas also in 1979 on their 'Monolith' tour and I would have to say that was the best concert at that time for me, better than Styx and Foreigner. Those guys just had it buttoned up and Steve Walsh was amazing during that time, probably all drugged up but at least he could still sing. When I saw them again during their 'Somewhere to Elsewhere' tour the difference in Steve's voice was beyond noticeable and not in a good way. Still a great show but his voice somehow didn't do the music justice. By far, Rush has been the cream of the crop for me. I saw them for the 2nd time during their final tour and what a show. If you like Dennis check out his last 2 albums that he released, '26 East' Volume 1 and then Volume 2. For me, those albums sound more like Styx than Styx did on their last 2 they released which just didn't have enough of the classic Styx sound that got them to where they got.

@Christopher Bingham I think it might depend on when they saw Lou Gramm. I saw him around 1979 so the band was really in their prime and basically still had their original members. From what I can remember Lou Gramm was stellar in his performance. For me the last 2 Styx albums although rave reviews by some and those fans will defend those 2 releases to the end I just can't see it. While the albums in themselves are okay they are both basically written by Will Evankovich who Tommy brought into the band and who seems to be a permanent fixture of the band now and will probably replace JY Young (IMO) when he can no longer tour leaving the band with zero original members. Only the song 'Gone' from the 'The Mission' really had that Styx sound. I loved 'Brave New World' even if everything was written separately and all because of the continued feud between Dennis, JY and Tommy. M y favorite album from the band to this day is 'Equinox'. Had it on vinyl and 8-Track back in the day and played it to death. Another current great band I've seen a couple of times in concert is Transatlantic. If you like progressive rock then this band is awesome. Typically 70-80 minute studio albums. They're basically a supergroup of Prog Musicians. If you've heard of Dream Theater, ex-drummer Mike Portnoy is in it. Great music for that genre and great performers live. I can go and on about music if you could tell so I'll stop here.

Coldplay got caught up in what a lot of 00s bands did when the 2010s rolled around, they started incorporation more pop and electronic elements into their music, and collaborating with artists outside of rock to try to stay in the game because rock was falling out of mainstream favor. It's all about staying on the charts. In this a lot of identity got lost, and the moment passed and a now even that era is fizzling out and a lot of them are stuck for the next direction. For example that latest Coldplay album feels like it could have came out in 2012, and that sound just isnt it anymore.

Through all their ups and downs they’ve remained my consistent all-time favorite band, and in a way I’ve come to love even a lot of their weaker material and see it as part of their charm, like no one else can be bad quite in the same way Weezer can. I do understand your logic, though, and would love to hear some more hidden gems in concert as well, as I got SOOO excited when they fired up “Fall Together” from Maladroit one time I was seeing them only for it to be used essentially as a transition song.

First of all, congratulations on 10 years, Jon! And speaking of the hilarious segment on the Adam Levine show called Maroon 5, I feel that OneRepublic might want to consider calling it quits as well, since Ryan Tedder is, in my opinion, grasping for straws to stay relevant, at this point. And also given the fact that (technically) the band has been around for over 25 years (yes, Zach and Ryan's roots are the band's roots). And the same has to be said for my favorite band, unfortunately, Pantera. Phil, vocally, is just not able to cut it, anymore, as well, as to me the band lost its core with BOTH Dimebag, and Vinnie Paul gone. This "reunion" tour, to me, is nothing more than a nostalgia act, and not something authentic, as it would have been had Dimebag and Vinnie still lived to this day..... but anyway, I'm glad to see you back at it....

SOAD is my all-time favorite band and i really think it's a shame that for so long now they've been put on an indefinite hold with just sporadic touring and no new releases. they've left a legacy of a such a beautiful and unabashedly astounding discography the likes of which very VERY few bands are able to hold up. in my honest opinion, i think they shouldn't push themselves too hard to create a new record if all the members aren't seeing eye-to-eye creatively. i would much rather them call it quits and leave SOAD as the untarnished, monumental work of art that it is than continue trying to push out new music that would end up mediocre at best because of its forced nature. every single member: serj, daron, shavo, and john are all so unbelievably talented and i adore scars on broadway along with serj's solo work. but my point is, no truly good art is forced. art which leaves a huge positive impact comes naturally through people's experiences and bonds. something as incredible as SOAD can't just be forced, and i hope that if, by some miracle, we do get new music from them, that it'll stay true to who they've been as a band for so long now.

They aren't on their prime anymore and they haven't been for a very long time Same with AC/DC, although they are better, despite still putting out music that sounds exactly as what they've been doing all these years. Then Maroon 5... yes they're still young and can play for lots and lots of years, but there's no band. I'm surprised they haven't broken up yet knowing the majority doesn't seem to play a part on the studio. They for sure are the definition of selling out. I love their old material but they're the 1st band that I hate despite actually having been a fan. You could say that back then they did "radio music" too, but it was one that for being very popular and commercial in a way was suprisingly good imo. New decade and everything went downhill. People say Jordi is their worst album, but they had got to rock bottom already with Red Pill Blues. They got there on that album and with Jordi they were on the ground face down on the concrete.

OK Human was absolutely fantastic - maybe they have another album like that in them, but maybe not. Impossible to say. As much as System of a Down helped shaped my musical tastes, I've wanted them to break up for a few years now. They're never going to get it together for a new album, and at this point I'm not sure I'd even want one, as it would probably just sound like a Scars on Broadway record with Serj on backing vocals. Thoughts on your list Coldplay=Definitely agree. Hope they end up going back to their roots on their last album as it would suck for them to continue on that Pop sound a la Maroon 5 and end up tarnishing their legacy. AC/DC=Agreed mostly after the reception of PWR/UP although I liked Shot in the Dark and Realize. I've even seen people say that this album was the best rock album of 2020. Personally, I wouldn't say it is the best when BMTH's Post Human: Survival Horror exists. Incubus=Agreed. I don't personally really care for stuff after A Crow Left of the Murder and don't really listen to them although Pardon Me, Drive, Wish You Were Here, Nice to Know You and Megalomaniac are great tunes. The band to me that is continuing on that sound but heavier is Nothing More. U2=Totally agree. I didn't even know they still made music after How to Dismantle an Atomic in 2004 System Of a Down=As much as they are my 5th favourite band, I think they should just be a touring band and not release new music as they would end up ruining their legacy just like Coldplay Maroon 5=Agree. To be fair, their popularity is likely falling off now mostly because Jordi flopped in 2022 (Don't be surprised when Todd in The Shadows covers this for Trainwreckords in 2026) and cheating allegations of Adam Levine in 2022. Weezer=I think they should just be a touring band at this point. Most of their music Post Green Album is just hit or miss in my eyes.

Pretty much agree with every one of your choices here. I just really hope that Coldplay can end off strong with their last one or two albums, cause they haven't put out a decent one since Ghost Stories (which I think is very underrated in their discography). Here's a few bands that I would add: - Stone Temple Pilots: Props to Jeff Gutt for doing his best, but they honestly should've retired for good after Scott Weiland's death. Plus, none of their post-reunion material comes close to their 90s output. - Dream Theater: They still put on an decent concert, but their creativity has been running on fumes ever since Mike Portnoy departed the band. - Architects: Sort of on-the-fence with this one cause I don't want them to retire just yet. However, the material they've been putting out since For Those That Wish to Exist has sounded very uninspired. I still have faith that they can make some great music without Tom Searle (Holy Hell proves that) but if they keep making songs like Meteor or Tear Gas, then I'd be very convinced that they should hang it up. - AFI: The band members clearly have no passion for AFI anymore and seem to be way more interested in their side projects. - Alice In Chains: I'm cool with them continuing to tour (still want to see them live), but there's no need for them to continue making music. Their last two albums were a slog to listen to. - Green Day: They peaked with American Idiot and haven't made an album since that has reached that standard. Sorry Jon. - Asking Alexandria: I mean, come on. The sky is blue.

to talk about bands that should be or already are retired is no challenge for me because close to all of my favourite bands fall under one of those two things. I feel that the biggest outlier of my favourites is LINKIN PARK. Much like other people mentioned in this comment section, they've talked about potentially getting a new vocalist, and I have to agree with the others when they said that there's no chance that'll fly. Chester was one of many vocalists who is irreplaceable, much like Chris Cornell of Soundgarden (notice how they called it quits not too long after his untimely death). A similar but more obscure situation that I'd personally like to bring into the light of day again is Blind Melon. While their new singer Travis Warren is good, I have to say that their glory days are long gone. Shannon Hoon's death should've been their stopping point because the guy was pretty much the driving lyrical force for every album. They've been putting out countless singles with Travis but never a new album because there's no chance they'll ever get back what was lost when Shannon passed.

Their new song "EDGING" was fine, sure, but the fact they got Tom back for that song just comes to show how much of a nostalgia act they are now. One that needs to retire is in the same vein as SoaD, and that's Rage Against the Machine. I love their work and listen to those three albums every couple of weeks even after all these years, but the idea of them releasing a new album together just seems like a dream at this point that's never going to come true. They had a lot of insightful and provocative things to say with their music but after Prophets of Rage it's clear they're not going to have anything new to bring to the table and this tour they've been trying to get going on is just not working out for them at all. It's at the point where I'd be happy just to keep those three albums in my collection and go see a cover band instead of the real thing. Love me some Rage but I think it's time for them to go their separate ways and just do anything else.
