Bangkok is a safe city compared to most large cities around the world, crimes against tourist exist but are preventable with a few precautions and common sense. I walk around Nana's nightlife on a Saturday night and look at what risks you face and chat with those who can offer sound advice including the great Bill from ‪@UTCM‬ channel. I also took a trip around Din Daeng flats, an area that was supposedly a ghetto according to netziens. What find was definitely different!

Bangkok police have cracked down on riding motorbikes on sidewalks, and even have a snitch program where you can get 1,000 Baht for reporting sidewalk scofflaws. It hasn't stopped it completely, but is definitely much less than before.

I lived in Soi 6 a few years until year 2000. Never had any problems. Then I moved across the road for the last 20+ years, still never a problem. Obviously I avoid those hugging "ladies" and I don't try to argue with drunk or aggressive guys. Never any problem with any bouncer or tuk-tuk or taxi drivers. If they want to overcharge just ignore them. As you and others mentioned in your video some guys just drink too much and think let's party and what can go possibly wrong. They find out what can go wrong - mostly losing money and valuables. Some guys learn from that experience. Other need some more time...

My first trip to Bangkok was in 1997, we stayed at Wendy House on Soi Kasem San and wandered about Bangkok for 4 days and nights before heading further afield. Having never been to Thailand I was struck by the kindness and helpfulness we felt wherever we went, often being the only Farang's to be seen in many places. All of your advice is what we heeded back then and I have made 3 more trips there and following said advice have never felt in danger or taken advantage of. As any pilot will tell you, if you don't have situational awareness you will find yourself in trouble. That applies to life in general or traveling out of your own comfort zone. Stay polite, don't make the local folks lose face and use your head if you are heading out for a night carousing and you will be just fine. I've never felt threatened anywhere in Thailand or SE Asia in general by following those rules. Great subject and hopefully people will pay attention to your advice, Thanks Pat!

Soi dogs, sinkholes in the footpath, heat stroke. Not scary at all. Cargo pants with zippers instead of shorts with open pockets will not only deter thieves but prevent you from losing things. Cheapo phone and local SIM for travelling. I'd put Bangkok behind Tokyo alone, on a level with Hong Kong. Thanks again, Pat. Interesting to see Din Daeng.

@@BangkokPat Anyone's who's taken the taxi from the airport into the city has seen the Din Daeng signs when you dive under the Sirat Road, but I wondered what it meant. As the crow flies, it's a hop skip and jump from where I normally stay but This Is Bangkok and I'd ask the concierge to send me there in a taxi. It's too easy to wander into a dead-end alley and it's awkward when people see you do that and you have to walk out again like a n00b.

Was travelling with a couple of golf buddies on our first trip to BKK when approached by a Tuk Tuk driver in Silom to see a "famous" Ping Pong show. Being complete newbies, we thought WTF and jumped in. First he took us on a high speed tour of the city. I remember going past the Grand Palace until 20mins later we arrived at a very seedy industrial complex. We realised we may have made a big mistake so we prepared ourselves for whatever was coming. We were shown in a door for 500B each where there was a dimmly lit stage surrounded by seating. All the operations "staff" looked like hardcore mafia types. No welcome smiling faces in this place. The show began and all I can say is we will never be able to unsee what we saw without going into details but it certainly wasn't the glamorous models featured on the Tuk Tuk drivers laminated brochure. At least we weren't beaten, robbed and left floating in a canal somewhere.

About 7 years ago a taxi driver offered to take me to a place with "sexy girls". We ended up in this poor looking bar located right down the Makkasan end of Sukhumvit Soi 3, laneway heading west right at the bend. It was between Nikhom Makkasan Rd and the Saen Saep canal. The taxi driver was friendly enough and told me to have a look and he would wait if I did not like it. I went inside and there was a lineup of 5-6 older, not that attractive women, all looking rather bored. I had a beer for about 100 baht and then told the taxi driver I was not interested so we left and he took me home. No hassles. No rip-off. I actually felt a bit sorry for the women there because the place was so out of the way I doubt there would have been much business, other than taxi drivers or tuk-tuk drivers. The taxi driver himself was quite friendly and seemed to think he was doing me a favour by finding a girl for me at 4am. It was an interesting experience and I did not feel threatened at all.

Interesting tale, Dexxter. He'll find many desperate guys after closing time who will jump at a chance like you had. You asked about experience with tuk-tuk drivers and those sexy girl brochures. I let them convince me a long time ago. Let's look... It seems they bring people to massage parlors to collect commissions. I am not sure how many of those still exist, there were lots of massage palaces on Petburi road. The tuk-tuks and taxis bring customers to those places and they get commissions. If someone wants to look around and see some options: go ahead, do it. And if the driver gets his commission then all is fine. If you don't spend money in any of those places then I think it is fair to pay the driver a decent amount. All fine, no hard feelings, enjoy the day. I can't be sure about this but I think there is some kind of agreement between the police and the guys who invite tourists to do this and that: Be nice, take your commission, and if they are stupid enough to buy overpriced jewelry or overpriced entertainment that is no problem. If tourists would be robbed or left in dark streets far away then I am pretty sure the police would tell those criminals to stop that or else.

I only experienced being robbed once some years ago in Khon Kaen. My wife and I were walking back to our hotel after dinner. 2 young guys came silently behind us coasting on a scooter with the engine off. They stole my wifes hand bag from her hand . She didnt have the strap over her shoulder. We reported it to the hotel security as it happened on their land. Totally not interested at all. We then wasted 2 hours at the nearby police station reporting it . They were equally not interested. Should have known. My wife only had a cheap holiday phone and a thousand baht in there so no big deal. The next day we decided to call the phone and see what would happen . A young thai guy actuall answered it and wanted us to meet him with a couple of thousand baht to get phone and bag back. Of course we didnt we wrote it off as a bad experience. Despite it not being a violent situation it was very unsettling. I never wear any jewelry or watch when out and my back pockets are empty Money in the front of my pants only with an additional 2000 baht well hidden under my clothes just in case.

The most dangerous thing I encountered, alone and more than a bit squiffy, was walking up Sukhumvit (I lived along Asoke), was a fully grown elephant coming towards me on the pavement. Although encountering a pack of soi dogs, alone, at 2am in a back street is very scary.

One of the fun places on Soi 3/1 are the Middle Eastern nightclubs. The normally operate after midnight, and they go on till dawn. In old days before Thaksin, you could be there till 9 am! There foreign dancers in there, from Syria, Tunisia, etc. The music is very loud, it's like being in the Middle East. Quite an interesting experience in there. And you should see the way they tip the dancers. Really crazy!

@@BangkokPat yes mate I,ve lived and stayed in Thailand before over many years. It's a great country but if you are going out in the night, just keep your head up for sure. The people are honest enough, it's like anywhere else good and bad. The only reason you may get in trouble is 99.9% your own doing. Very rare a Thai person would hassle you. And if they do the other Thai people will see that and sought it out fast. The Farang is the biggest problem, I,ve had a couple of incidents where other farang have had to bigger mouths but never had an actual altercation. Just bluff them and walk away. It's easier then all the bullshit if the Police turn up. Besides like I said the Thai people will take care of idiots. Enjoy the country for what it is especially if you are a single man. I don't think there is many places on earth like Thailand it's very unique 👌 seeya mate cheers 👍

I can't actually imagine why a Westerner would want to live anywhere in Bangkok. If you want to live in Thailand , great ! ( not me though !) There are so many nicer places in Thailand than Bangkok. Each to their own. In my opinion Thailand is a fun place to visit, have a holiday , but no way would I live there. I live in Taiwan which is fantastic.Have done for more than 30 years. It's one of the safest places in the world , unless China decides to invade ! High standard of living , low cost of living. Not as cheap as Thailand , though. I notice in Thailand Thai food restaurants are half the price of Taiwanese ( in Taiwan ) food restaurants. Yet Western style restaurants cost about the same in both countries. In many studies, Taiwan is often rated as one of the best places for expats to live in the world, let alone Asia. But , hey ! This is a video about Bangkok...Enjoy...May is nearly here...Enjoy the insane heat Guys...Back in the 80s I picked up a girl from Soi Nana. We had a great time, but I noticed later she had some capsules..I asked her what they were for and she mumbled something I didn't understand. She later left, but apparently stole some shoes outside another room in the guesthouse. True or not , I don't know. I think she had originally planned to drug me and rip me off, but we got along really well and she had a change of heart.

It´s really that simple: Don´t get drunk in areas like Soi Cowboy, Nana or Patpong when you are alone. If you take the risk looking for some entertainment there: don´t complain about loosing money. I lived some time in On Nut and in Huai Khwang . Always felt safe. And when it was too late in the night just went by taxi or motorbike taxi. For me Bangkok is safe!. Compared to Rio de Janeiro or some places in London, New York, Banlieue Paris or on Reeperbahn in Hamburg.

I have been around the world more times than I remember. Everywhere where there are tourists there are criminals to rob them. But criminals will watch a crowd and pick the one-in-fifty that looks like a mark. I don't want to be racist, but Japanese tourists come from a culture where there is no crime, and they are a bit naive. Don't be the person who looks like a mark and the criminals will choose someone else.
