Live November 1984.
Good video and sound (mono). From SP speed normal VHS video tape (master) recorded from original broadcast.
Saw the Bangles with the Fuzztones at the Ritz, NYC a couple of months before this broadcast. Bangles were a great little secret before the massive fame they achieved later.

Most people had never heard of the Bangles at this time but you can just tell they’re going to be huge. Four gorgeous women who can play, harmonize and have a ton of charisma and a knack for catchy harmonies. Just a killer appearance.

Back in the 1990s, there was a VH1 show (I think it was on VH1) where Al Franken introduced old clips of SNL musical guests. When it came to The Bangles he totally trashed them in the intro, saying something like, “And now here are The Bangles trying to prove that they have talent.” Well, it is clear that they can play their instruments and sing in tune, so I can only guess that he tried to sleep with one of them, was rebuffed, and years later was still upset about it. And when he made the comment about talent I thought, “Gee, pretty big talk from a comedian who was almost never funny!”

They wanted to be a 60's throwback band that wrote and performed great albums and great songs like in this performance. The industry wanted to sell singles and Susanna Hoffs' looks. The 80's was a funny world where women in the alternative scene were about art, but in the the corporate world wanted them to be about sex. It would wear anyone down.

Agree about the camera work. Letterman Show USUALLY had great camera work (for the time) for music acts (see my Nick Lowe Letterman "Raging Eyes" post). Not one solo shot of Michael Steele on bass - her part during the break (1:48) should have been featured. The show was not broadcast in stereo. Only Tonight Show was conducting test experiments in MTS stereo at time of this Letterman broadcast. So ease your mind, stereo does not exist and this is as good as it gets. Check out this click with improved MONO sound (sound level was low on this clip): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yRRHSH3v7Ek.html. From Wikipedia: "Sporadic network transmission of stereo audio began on NBC on July 26, 1984, with The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, although at the time only the network's New York City flagship station, WNBC, had stereo broadcast capability; regular stereo transmission of NBC programs began during early 1985."

This is for those complaining that this band had its sound evolve. Do I have to remind you that The Beatles sound of 1964 and The Beatles sound of 1969 are two different things? anybody can replicate early pre Beatles 60s sound at least for a while. There was a band that made it to stardom a few years before the Bangles, the stray cats. They got famous rehashing the late 50s early 60s rockabilly sound. And then they faded away because they never evolved. If every Bangles CD sounded like early 60s pre Beatles today nobody would give a crap about them.

She looked even worse in prior years. And had an ADHD type stage presence that now looks flaky. Within a year of this, I assume Vicki went blonde, lost weight, and got rid of her twitchy stage presence. Debi looks great here, she started to look slightly worse in comparison after this as Vicki and Susan began to look better. And Michael is just Michael, just rock solid and consistent most of the years. Either you liked her look or you didn't. I did not like Michael's look during the 1980s, now I love it. Liked Vicki the most in the 1980s, now she is 3rd on my list behind Susan and Michael. Go figure. Debi, well, poor Debi. Being the drummer and the larger of the 3 girls, well ...
