Bar End Mirrors Installed On A Triumph Bonneville

I wasn't sure I wanted to go with bar-end mirrors on my 2010 Triumph Bonneville or not. I liked the look, but I wasn't sure about the function. So, I bought some knock-off Chinese made bar-end mirrors for $15 to try out. In the end, they seem like they will be durable enough to last a little while, despite the poor quality. This video shows how to install bar-end mirrors using the Triumph handlebars with threaded inserts instead of the rubber plug that comes with the mirrors.

Awesome video. Seems like you could pick a lock very nicely. I may have a job for you. It's a the local bank near ya. 🙈👌😁😁😂😂

This is a great video explaining what’s involved. Just purchased the Moto Gadget bar end mirrors and adapter only to realize the adapter screw is slightly too large for the existing pre-drilled hole in the inserts. Does anybody here know if Triumph produces an adapter extension for bar end mirrors that would fit on the 2014 mag wheel Bonnes (7/8 OD bars). I really want to avoid drilling and tapping the holes if I can.

If I understand your predicament correctly, all you need to do is to purchase replacement screws for the adapters in the correct size. You'll want stainless steel metric sized bolts with the correct head. if you can't find it locally you can go to Amazon and find them there.

@@tinderboxarts That might be a solution! The stock screw is a 5mm which you pointed out in your vid; the moto gadget screw on their adapters is a 6mm I believe - I’m hoping the 5mm actually expands the adapter enough to create a proper friction connection to avoid rattling. Anyway, I appreciate the response! Cheers.

Nice vid for those going with the stock bars. I ended up going with Biltwell flat tracker bars which can accommodate this style of mirror nicely.

Using the rubber hose to expand inside the handlebar was genius and worked very well for me on the clutch side. I have Kuryakin grips on my Triumph, and doing the same thing on the throttle side made the throttle bind. I'm going to have to figure something out for that side. Thanks for the video, it helped me get started on the process.

Why not just pull the insert out?
@tinderboxarts
@tinderboxarts 3 года назад
You're testing my memory, but I believe the insert is either press fit by machine or welded. In other words, it isn't coming out unless you drill it out.

No, sorry. It's "baked" into the glass I'm afraid. I'm used to it now, though.

I have a 2005 t100, and my first bar ends were like your's. But I'm old and like a larger mirror. Then I bought the 80 dollar set, but hated the way they fit. Finally I bought the Triumph bar ends for 195. Ridiculous price I think, but u only go round once. But honestly, the quality is not a whole lot better than the 15 dollar pair. But they're full size, they look very,, similar to the 15 dollar pair but bigger and round. So they keep the old school Bonneville look. Maybe by now you've gotten the fancy ones as well. Ride safe.

You know, I've been happy enough with the cheap mirrors. I have two bikes and my Bonnie gets used mostly on local back roads where the mirrors have less importance. No doubt the Triumph mirrors are much better quality, but their utility depends on what kind of riding you do. When I go on long trips or highway, I tend to take my sport touring bike instead.

@@tinderboxarts True enough. This is my first Triumph. Over the years I've had everything from a suzuki gt 500, first bike, to a 94 VMAX sold about 4 years ago. And several in between. No sports bikes though. I got the t100 cause I missed riding and looked sweet for a right price. The mirrors were a luxury,no doubt but just doing it as a , making it better,,thing. Don't do any long runs anymore so this is it. Last bike thing I guess. But you're right, the cheap ones did just as good, just smaller. And when you're older, better vision is a plus. Take care.

Have one of those for the cafe and I swear they always move. At one point I will drill from the top down through the Handel and make it permanent lol..
@tinderboxarts
@tinderboxarts 5 лет назад
Yeah, many of them do tend to move. If you leave them alone in the "right" position they do tend to take a set there but if you start adjusting every ride they get loose.

You know, when I first put them on I thought it might be an issue, but now I don't even notice it. It's kind of like wearing sunglasses in that you don't notice them after a few minutes of wearing them. I don't do much night riding on this bike, but mirrors at night have limited utility anyway.

Interested in knowing how these are working out for you? I bought the same type for my scrambler and while I got them in the bars okay I could never get them to squeeze the insert enough to keep them from rotating.
@tinderboxarts
@tinderboxarts 6 лет назад
I've put hundreds of miles on these now. I'd probably have more, but we've had thunderstorms for two weeks straight! Anyway, I've been very satisfied. They don't rotate or move at all in the bars, and I can adjust the mirror without moving anything else. Sometimes in the garage I bump a mirror while walking past, but there's no rotation of the arm, just the mirror itself moves. I think the idea of using the existing threaded insert in the Triumph bars works great. You definitely want to tap for the larger thread, though.

Could you please provide any link for these mirrors? Thanks for the beautiful video btw :)

The place I bought these no longer offers them, but they are widely available with various brand names on ebay and amazon. Honestly, they are all probably made in the same factory, so if you just search "bar end mirrors" and pick the picture which looks right I think you'll be okay. There are also higher-end models, but these cheap mirrors have been working fine for me for several years now.

Can you comment on the field of visibilities of these bar end ones compared with the conventionals?
@tinderboxarts
@tinderboxarts 3 года назад
Of course the field of view is smaller. The mirrors themselves are smaller and they are mounted low. However, I haven't found it to be a problem. It took me a couple of rides to get used to them and once they are adjusted correctly I can see anything I need to see. The one drawback I've found is that they tend to get knocked out of position while parked in the garage. You walk by the bike and whack the mirror with your hip, or you reach for the handlebars to move the bike and knock it out of position. I usually stop at the top of my driveway and check the mirrors now before I roll out to the street.

what type of bolt did u use to secure the break reservoir.
@tinderboxarts
@tinderboxarts 4 года назад
I can't recall what size it was, but it is metric and I did find something locally, so it isn't anything unusual. I'm pretty sure I bought a bolt too long and then just cut it down with a hacksaw and grinder.

They are M10x1.25, normal(right hand) thread types. You can also find specific mirror hole plugs.

You can find them on ebay or Amazon and probably other places too. They all probably come from the same factory but with different names attached. Whatever link I used is probably long gone now!
