Where is this so called patriarchy and why don't they have any response to such hostility and open contempt? Oh yeah because it doesn't fuckin exist. Until Ken got a hold of it and brought it back to Barbieland, and then rejects it when he finds out that the Patriarchy is not about horses. Some reviewers bitch about the word Patriarchy being used so often in this movie, forgetting that half of the time it's Ken talking how much he loves the Patriarchy. I saw Barbie at a sold out Saturday night showing in Toronto that was about 3/4 women between ages 18-50, and they had a total blast. I was surprised that they laughed at almost every joke in the movie ( I laughed at maybe a third of the jokes ) and they gave it a loud "hoot" at the end of the movie. ( I've never heard women "hooting" at a movie before ) To me it seemed like Barbie was much more of a woman's movie than I expected.

The media we consume affects us. Especially those of the younger generations. It may seem like it’s harmless because you always have the choice to not agree or not watch it, but it really isn’t harmless. Movies like this which will draw a large audience of impressionable children are especially egregious, but that doesn’t excuse the others from being a more standard flavor of indoctrination and manipulation. The moment the activist can preach to you that you are the problem to your face and you remain quiet because “it’s just a movie” is when all is lost. If you decide to put stupid ideas in your movie then the movie deserves to be criticized for those stupid ideas. That’s just the way of things

I don't agree with it but let's not make it seem like James Bond wasnt also a controversial thing to feminists. We are "supposedly" getting shots fired at us men (I'll form my own opinion when I watch the movie and dissect it myself) but when James Bond was pretty much portraying women as conquests solely for Bonds subplot satisfaction dont you think feminists felt a type of way. Apply the same logic is what I'm saying if a movie glorifies the patriarchy and Male dominance or it seems that way to feminists and they complain it should be understandable.
@SentientMeatloaf1
@SentientMeatloaf1 3 месяца назад
@@TheRealDarth_Vader I don’t think these two things are necessarily equitable. I’ll be the first one to admit that bond isn’t exactly where you should be going if you’re looking for healthy relationship coaching, but never does Bond have anything to say about the feminine gender as a whole. Let’s not forget Bonds boss is a woman, and the romance subplot is reset every movie mostly because bond is in general a cheesy and campy spy flick and just wants to do the same thing over and over again, and therefore needs to recycle the trope of the “flirting with danger” type romance, continuity be damned. While it is entirely possible to get weird vibes from it as far as treating women like “conquests” so to speak, that almost entirely depends on interpreting the movies in a negative Light, in order to see the oppression one wants to see, where none of that was intentionally baked into the script. It’s Just a consequence of the style of storytelling that James Bond movies are trying to pull off, an unfortunate consequence, but not actually intentional or trying to say anything. Barbie, on the other hand, is just overtly mean. It knows damn well what it’s saying, what it’s doing, and near every line is an overt condemnation of masculinity as a whole. It says men are evil oppressors who are incapable of taking women seriously and actively take joy in oppressing them, and every claim otherwise is a secret sexist dogwhistle. It states this openly, and brazenly, And it wholeheartedly believes every word. It is the entire point of the movie to condemn and shit on men. It is propaganda in its purest form. I went into this movie expecting it to be a celebration of femininity. I expected some level of progressive and or feminist dogma sprinkled in, but figured it would be one or two lines to virtue signal and that would be that. Instead I was treated to 2 hours of raging non-stop bitterness and spite directed at men wearing the mask of a family friendly comedy. so, in conclusion, I get what you’re trying to say, but I don’t think it’s a very reasonable comparison. Your main point stands, but I don’t think James Bond is the vehicle you want to use to express it.

My favorite part was when the plan to retake Barbieland ended up being a plot to emotionally manipulate and sabotage the Kens around them by pretending to be interested or give a shit about them and then crushing their emotions at the very last second in order to get what they want. And all of this is treated as if it’s the most perfectly logical response ever, genius even, with absolutely no moral hang ups whatsoever. This isn’t exactly a glowing review of the feminine gender or way of thinking, although I doubt the writers see any issues with it, Men just deserve it after all. Oh, and the ease of which Ken was able to take over Barbie land just infers that the women there are a bunch of idiots who didn’t realize that patriarchy was exactly what they wanted all along. Ken is not smart enough to manipulate or brainwash anybody, he just showed up said his piece and everybody bought into it and was happy. It’s the main cast that was engaging in actual brainwashing behavior, kidnapping and “reprograming” the Barbies brains one by one by indoctrinating them with feminist platitudes, which ironically turns them from being content and happy with life into angry and bitter manipulators intent of revolutionizing the system so they can be in charge and reduce the kens to underclass citizens where they belong. (Not dissimilar to real life feminism on a meta level) It stuns me how writers can be so overconfident in their ideals that they write this shit into the script without realizing how easy it is to see the protagonists as the obvious villains of the story. This movie does not paint women, or feminism, or femininity, or anything of the sort in a very flattering light despite what it probably thinks.

I didn’t see this movie, oddly enough because I happened to see the poster for it when exiting my theater from seeing MI-7:DR and getting really weird vibes from it. I’m so glad I adopted a “wait and see” approach. I will say, other than that tiny hint, you are 100% right that the marketing department really nailed this one. I am truly puzzled by the feedback I have seen on this one, ironically from all sides. I saw media sources reviews on RT come out against it, the last ones I would have expected even, and men come out meh at best and “dear God, I need a drink” at worst. Two in particular I have never seen so upset by it. Then there are the women. Most I think share your opinion Vex, but others really seem to be going to bat for it and it is blowing my mind. The amount of times I have heard the word “satire”… did this movie seem at all satirical to you??? I’m honestly wondering and a bit confused. Now to the real part 😂 Fanfreakingtastic review as always Vex!!! So was looking forward to seeing you skewer this crap like a shishkabob and you of course never fail to disappoint 😂🎉Honestly, yours I think was the first that really made me consider what itCOULD HAVE been, and it at times made me even sadder for the missed opportunity it took by putting out this heaping dumpster fire. It could have been great! I really liked how you pointed out that it missed out on showing how the genders truly can complement each other. Gosh, I don’t usually say this, but it could have even maybe gone strides to actually healing and bridging the gap that has become more and more of an issue between the genders. I found it really interesting that you pointed out how much of it was likely a commentary on Roe v Wade. It’s sad they took this golden opportunity and just wasted it by spewing vile disgusting messaging and insulting men, mothers, marriage, and kids. It sounds like a REAL piece of work, and not in a good way. Good grief, it’s getting tiresome!! Like, how hard can it be to make a good movie, it’s not rocket science??! Anyways, sorry! Great review and great spice as always Vex!!! I am so sorry it was so disappointing, and that you had to sit and endure this one. Thank you for seeing it so I don’t have to!! ❤️

It’s insulting how the Mattel board of directors currently consists of five female leaders. But, in order for Gerwig to make her hamfisted and vapid patriarchal metaphor. The board at Mattel is comprised of, surprise, surprise, all white men. Likewise, her equally vacuous message of female suppression completely ignores the legacy of equality established by Barbie for over 70 years prior to this shitty movie. Barbie and Ken were equal counterparts who complimented each other at “home” and “at work.”

The funny thing is that with how quickly all the Barbies went along with the Kens’ patriarchy, it shows that women have a biological and instinctual need to exist in a world run by men where all they have to do is be compassionate and loving, and they’ll have all they need from a good man.

This really could have been an AMAZING comedy/drama about mental health, depression, imposter syndrome, etc.....but no...men are evil, women are good. But how strong and independent are the Barbie's, really, if a single Ken could subjugate them ALL in like 12 hours? In nother video, they mentioned how all the "brainwashed Barbies" seemed perfectly happy and content with their Kens and the new Kendom....

My biggest dissappointment was that Raquelle and Ryan weren't in the movie. They were the highlight of Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse. Having this Kim Kardashian wannabe and her wannabe Heart-throb Musician brother trying to split Barbie and Ken apart but failing spectacularly on the Big Screen would kill me especially if the script was written by people like Lord and Miller. But I don't think even they could have salvaged this movie.

The human dynamic hinges on two things 1) wanting to reproduce and 2) wanting to live long and comfortably. Barbieland has neither of those issues so there wouldn’t be a need for any “gender based” politics. There aren’t even genders. Just dolls with different interests. Kens are just taller, short haired, shirtless Barbies. Which makes you wonder why there a homeless 2nd class in this smaller long haired doll ran society? Secondly, the movie’s conflict was Ken bringing his natural sexuality to the virgin Barbieland. He basically created college life. How long would that last with no sex, no female sexuality (it was explained as a trance that the Kens put on them), and no physical need for a larger stronger doll? I get that the movie is pretty surface level and shouldn’t require this much thought to get the “men are usually ruining things for women” moral.

Hey Vex! Great work as always! I love your videos: they're always very well informed and never fail to shine a different light on several aspects that I may have not considered or just flat out flew well over my head... Could it be that you're not giving the movie enough credit this time around tho? Sure enough it is far from perfect: I do agree that the movie is at its best when it's just a silly caricature of what it's expected it to be and that it completely falls flat on its face in the second half... But I also feel like there's plenty of fun to be had if you manage not to pay too much attention to the whole "political" side of it (I know, very hard at times... Still!) Don't get me wrong, some scenes had me roll my eyes to the back of my head as well (America Ferrera's monologue is borderline unsufferable to say the least), but most of the time I felt like the whole Kendom and patriarchy and overall humor was pretty aware of its absurdity and went to the absolute extreme only for comedic purposes. Ahah I don't know... Maybe I'm the one being too nice to the movie now or maybe my hard work on divorcing myself from this kind of narration in order to start enjoying some content again is starting to bear some fruit! Anyways, hope I managed to make some kind of sense! Keep up the good work, much love from Italy 🤌

Thank you so much and I really appreciate your take! Going in, despite my excitement, I was hoping that I could divorce the ideology from the film. First 20 minutes made me truly believe that. But it just doesn't stop with the injection and it makes it very hard then to admire all the things this film does REALLY well (sets, direction, exposition at times). By the end I felt irritated because on top, it couldn't decide if it was a satire or comedy or drama, so the messaging becomes even harder to ignore. The Ken moments, even his musical numbers, were what made me stay in the theatre. Gosling was a GEM in this. I really wanted to give Barbie the benefit of the doubt, just the movie wouldn't let me 🥲 Cheers and I hope you are having a lovely weekend 🤗

@@VexElectronica Yes! I left the theatre with the same confusing feeling too! Was it comedy? Was it satire? They couldn't POSSIBLY be serious right? I love how the movie debunked the idea that the world is a patriarchy. Ken gets told that he can do whatever he wants, as a straight white man, so he goes looking for a jobe, but gets rejected cause he has no skills. it's a meritocracy after all.
@bethwilliams4903
@bethwilliams4903 11 месяцев назад
Damn this was good! Like every other girl I grew up with Barbie, altho my experience was limited by a few realities: 1. You could get her clothes on - or off. The plastic-rubber material of her body made it impossible to make costume changes easy or convenient. My Barbie’s were usually naked. 2. Ken was irrelevant. As were most of the accessories, like Skipper and Midge. I did like the car. 3. Pink was overdone in the extreme. To this day I avoid pink, anything. 4. My little sister chewed off the fingers, toes, nose from each of my Barbie’s. The hair Another story. So, the real world of girls playing with Barbie is nothing like what Gerwig decides to film, I was not alone with defaced, naked Barbie’s. But I can say this, no one I knew ever thought to take their pile of baby dolls, also somewhat ratty and worn, and smash their heads in on cement. Guess we needed to have the empowered 3rd wave Feminist movement for that 🙄 Saw you on Movie Cynic panel, discussion was on Indy 5, which I haven’t seen. But your comments blew me away, I love sarcasm and you have that but with a heavy dose of a very good nature - which I think the panel appreciated from what I heard and saw. And I just bet you were able to get your Barbie’s clothes on and off!!!

Excellent video. What really bothers me about this misandrist bs is that I see women walking around talking about the world like it really is presented in movies like this, like it’s still 1920 or they live in a Third World country where women are still subjugated. And they will talk about this while they are sitting in a café drinking a spritzer bathing in luxury having not a care in the world. It infuriates me to no end. It must be exhausting pretending to be a victim and a girlboss at the same time. Particularly because in reality they are neither. There’s no victimization here but certainly there is nothing to be bragged about either, no achievements, no real successes in life. These are just empty vapid women with nothing in their lives and too much time on their hands so they are bored and they blame that boredom everything but themselves. I tell them they can start a charity or go to a Third World country and help women that actually are being victimized. But now, that’s too much trouble. And yet the same women see nothing wrong about cheating on their husbands and lying to them and even shoplifting stuff that they perfectly well can’t afford. Yes I want these people running the world, NO THANK YOU. Believe all women? Not on your life. Because I know them.

I see the most hard-core biiishist feminists complain that there are no decent men to date. Gee, I wonder why. Somebody has a stand up and call for this insane madness to stop. Otherwise it’s going to be a very lonely place for straight women, who despite calling for the soyinization of men, never seem to be interested in partnering up with one of those simps. When we have kids do you really want your sons to be like that? Do you want your daughters be so narcissistic and self-centered that they don’t think effort is required for success? Do you not want either of them to have a chance to find a decent partner? Men women are like John Lennon and Paul McCartney. They may have a couple of decent singles on their own, but they need each other to create the masterpieces that comprise the Beatles catalog. I saw some crazy chick on TikTok that saying that a woman’s bone marrow creates sperm cells now so they don’t need men anymore. Is this the kind of delusional world that people really want to create? I don’t want to preach. I shouldn’t have to. But somebody has to stand up to this insanity.

 @VexElectronica recommends we "find a compilation of the Ken scenes because that's the best parts of this movie" and every male and female review I've seen (ok, six in a row) says the same thing. I guess I'll wait for that sort of thing to come to RU-vid which has been a more creative space than Hollywoke for some time. I don't know about the common trope that women can't be funny- THIS review proves otherwise-- but for damn sure feminists can't, so leave it to a shat-upon man to be the light in the darkness, the true entertainer, the chocolate in the Pepto Bismol vomit. Neatly making a lie of the whole grim angry Third Wave Feminist thesis underlying this latest cynical bait & switch of a once-loved brand.

Little Women 2018 directed by Greta was actually a better portrayal of being a woman and the beauty of sisterhood and the diversity of womanhood because we’re individuals who have different ambitions. The movie showed that some women want to just be mothers or career getters or both and that’s okay. Greta already said something feminist that was more balanced and made more sense since it took place in a time of history when women’s rights weren’t as expansive as they are now. Greta and the writers could’ve done what Toy Story did and explore the loss of innocence nowadays with social media. Young girls in particular are trying to “mature” faster and faster with each generation. Girls don’t wanna play Barbie they wanna do TikTok dances. If anything, the wanna-be-Billie-Eillish daughter should’ve been the focus of the story and her arc of being sad and miserable to more optimistic and silly as she spends time with Barbie. Basically do what “Life Size” with Tyra Banks did years ago. 🤦🏽‍♀️
