The Super Mario Bros. Movie was *this* close to being the highest-grossing film of last year. THIS. FUCKING. CLOSE. And then came this movie and people would rather see this sorry excuse of a Barbie movie (STOP HATING THIS VIDEO AND DEFENDING THIS MOVIE, YOU DISNEY SHILLS WHO THINK “WHITE FEMINISM” IS BETTER THAN REAL FEMINISM WHERE REGARDLESS OF THE COLOUR AND GENDER, EVERYONE IS TREATED LIKE EQUALS INSTEAD OF SOLELY WHITE WOMEN!!!!!!!!!) so that they could make fun of TSMBM losing to… THIS!!!!!! (and a few other movies for that matter, even one or a couple animated movies. It lost to at least one of the Frozen movies (TSMBM on its own, for as amazing as its success is, is only this much more successful than Frozen 1, yet opening weekends aside, more people would rather see another Frozen movie and anticipate more Frozen sequels than Illumination’s Mario movie sequels, but what if TSMBM2 is the highest-grossing animated… or general… movie in the late 2020s and Frozen 3 & 4 surprise the world by making less than, say, half a billion on a 2 hundred million dollar or more budget?) and The Lion King, which wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t the 2019 version (and its upcoming prequel that will lose to Sonic 3) because I’m sick and tired of people talking shit about the Disney Renaissance films just to make the remakes look better despite having all the more political (in)correctness, visuals that replace beautiful and lively hand-drawn with CGI that is supposed to look more realistic but also looks faker and less originality, but I just know that making failure after failure after failure, because of the sheer likeliness of Mufasa: The Lion King making under three hundred million dollars at the box office, if the Lion King remake were made in the 2020s, it would also make this little money or less)

I agree. I told one of my friends that I didn't care much for it, and he told me I'd missed the point. I said I understand existential crises (I have them every ten minutes). I understand the often contradictory expectations placed on a woman and how you can't really meet them. I understand that the Barbie world, where the Kens were essentially treated as accessories (like women are, especially to wealthy men, in the real world) was not a "better" version of the real world. I understand the need to find yourself. And with all that content, the movie managed to make me feel absolutely nothing about any of it lol. The execution was very meh. They had a lot to say and didn't say any of it well. But if I say that, I'm a "woman-hater." Correction: I hate everyone equally.

I feel like Pirates of the Caribbean is the gold standard for making a fun and engaging script with basically zero source material. Nobody really had high expectations going in and had those expectations shattered at the theater. What's notable is the development for that script began in the early 90s and was a passion project. You can't just say "we're gonna make a movie about X property, write me a script" and expect gold, and that's exactly what Mattel did. Disney executives had to be convinced by their writers to make the pirates movie.

It's more so the investors and studios want a recognisable IP rather than something original. The writers would love to create original works, but to get the funding they basically have to do an in name only adaptation of an IP because that's all that gets greenlit. And then BOOM! The end! Barbie Girl remix plays! And images of Barbie and Ken dolls (and Alan) flash across the screen while credits roll. I was like "What? That's it? That's how the movie ends? I dont dislike either of them as filmmakers generally but I’m basically describing Barbie and The Last Jedi It’s obvious as a mushroom cloud they want to do something ambitious but don’t know what, as I mentioned before. They are given the task of a modern installment of a classic franchise and they feel the need to do something unexpected with the main character but not only are they confused but they’re not considering how it effects these characters in the long run. Why would Luke Skywalker toss the same lightsaber his father wielded, the same object he lost with his right hand seconds before discovering his fathers identity.

Barbie as a character was underwritten. It was like the movie tried everything in its power to NOT make this a movie about Barbie. They added dozens of extra "Barbies" and a variety of Kens and other side characters to take the focus off of Barbie being the main character. She was supposed to be "Stereotypical Barbie", but this wan't really explained or explored. Why was she "stereotypical"? Where was her backstory? The whole thing was too focused on having a message of some sort and having pretty sets and costumes, while neglecting to actually have a story with some kind of substance or character development.
@CandieP
@CandieP 3 месяца назад
She was stereotypical Barbie because she wasn’t the President, she wasn’t a scientist, she wasn’t part of the Supreme Court justice, she can’t fly a plane, she doesn’t even have a job, she’s just the Pretty Barbie, hence why she told Ruth Handler she wanted to be apart of the world that makes things and not the thing that’s made. All of this was explained in the movie when Stereotypical Barbie had her breakdown 🙄

It drives me nuts how worshipped this movie is. And I 100% believe it was thanks to the marketing and memes. People think this movie is a cultural milestone empowering women thanks to the marketing and it's popularity. But it really is badly written, and people just can't see it? It really could've been a good, fun movie. It had potential to be a lot lighthearted and funny. I think it could've been improved a lot if they added 1-2 more songs and pushed the comedy further, because those parts of the movie had sooo much potential. Kens were funny, Barbieland was great, and the dancing was fantastic. The problem was the fact that they decided to make it preachy, instead of trying to make a traditional story with a concrete idea. Instead of embracing the FUN of Barbie. I honestly think the early 2000's content for girls had it right. They knew back then how to make good shows/movies for girls that were feminist, relatable, wholesome, and just simply fun. Series that come to mind are Totally Spies, Winx, H2O Just Add Water, or WITCH for example. Barbie could've been something like that, but the director clearly did not have that intention. It was ruined by online activism, bad writing, and cynicism.

Barbie is such a strange experience. I can't say in good faith that I didn't enjoy it, because I did, it was a wild ride in the theater and a very entertaining investment of both time and money, although not the kind of entertainment I expected with everyone praising the movie. To its credit, it has a very unique aesthetic that helps tremendously with landing jokes, I genuinely laughed more than once during screentime. That being said, it's the kind of movie I won't see twice, it's a very effective flashbang but once the flash subsides, you get to see what was hidden behind... and the more you think about it, the more it falls apart, Mattel being the most egregious example. It serves no purpose other than making slapstick jokes at the expense of world consistency, that entire section was just awful really.

I still belt out "what was I made for" it's a gorgeous song, and the montage it plays over COULD have been really powerful if literally ANYTHING in this movie prior to it lead up to it. that speech given by the mother at the end pissed me off. like putting aside my thoughts on the contents of the speech, if you're going to have a character give a speech like that.... it is basic storytelling logic to have shown them experiencing/dealing with these issues beforehand. otherwise it comes across like they're extremely privileged and complaining about problems they don't have. it would have 100% made more sense for barbie (the only one we see actually experience sexism in the story) to have made that speech right before she decides she definitely doesn't want to go and be a human. adios. humanity sucks.

The thing about her not feeling like Barbie anymore and wanting to live in the human world is handled so poorly. Especially considering the point was that her issues start because of the mother's feelings. Instead of romanticising the real world and have her wish to be there for no reason when she knows nothing about it and they didn't even explore it, they could've made a point of her not being able to stay as just Barbie now that she's seen the real world. Maybe she would need to find someone else to play with her but even if she tries to stay and enjoy her ideal doll world she's conscious now, she knows how things are not as perfect in the real world and more importantly she's learned the own damage her doll has made too (taking the point about the physical image you mentioned which was such a wasted opportunity). She could've used THAT as her motivation. Yes, she doesn't KNOW anything about the real world but she wants to, because she would rather come back to Barbieland to make it better but that's why first she needs to go and experience the real world and learn about it.

I enjoyed Barbie but it wasn't the "best movie ever made" like people kept saying it was. The real spectacle of the movie was the marketing for it and like honestly cultural reset, pink was everywhere, never seen so many people so excited to dress up for a movie in all pink!! And the premier outfits that Margot wore were amazing, the all girls Mariachi band in pink for the Mexico premier made me tear up, it was real sweet. But the movie itself was just a movie. Not the worst movie ever but no where near the best. It also felt like a slap in the face to all the women who went all out in pink ready to see Barbie show that being cute a feminine doesn't make you any less intelligent, only for her to become a sad beige Barbie at the end. If you wanna watch a better version of the Barbie movie, just watch Enchanted and Legally Blonde back to back.

@txwtw I think it is a better portrayal of the fish out of water story where Giselle really gets to explore the real world and fall in love with it, the good, the bad. She learns new emotions that she never had before and concepts she hasn't heard of and we actually really understand why she wants to change worlds. Barbie was fun but the real world seems to be told to her rather than experienced by her. She gets told how women feel and how men act. She's only in the real world for a little while before she has to go back to Barbieland to reset everything and in that short time it's hard to imagine she was given a genuine valid reason to want to go back. Giselle truly falls in love with the new world while Barbie seems to want to leave just because she can

What the film proposes as an answer to modern male/female relations is that the two sexes should just be atomized from each other, and that's no surprise when he whole film is a visualization of the feminist argument against the Genesis story. Many hate the fact that Eve was made out of Adam's side (not his rib), as if that meant she was lesser than him because her creation was dependent on his', but that's not the point. The reason Eve is made out of Adam's side is to show how we as human beings are relational creatures by nature--both of us (but women especially). We are both interdependent of each other. You can literally not explain one sex without the other. That's the point. But in a society that values autonomy and hyper-individuality above anything else, interdependence seems like a threat. Hence, there's no Barbie and Ken working together to solve their world's problems. There's no Barbie and Ken, period. The film could only propose "it's Barbie and it's Ken." Its answer is that men and women have to learn to separate themselves from one another to reach self-actualization, which is such a bummer. It could have actually been so much more.
@Femmeaesthetic
@Femmeaesthetic 2 месяца назад
this idea of "you have to find yourself" pretty much came from feminists, it's very obvious they hate Adam and Eve working togather since these radicals intention is to segregate the opposite sex, ken didn't need to "find himself" the only thing he wanted was a basic level of respect from Barbie, the same people who say "ken is just an accessory" are the same people who say "Ken needs to find himself to get out of Barbie's shadows" people defending this movie just gets worse and worse. Ken is meant to be a supporting character for barbie & barbie has that appreciation from him which this movie destroys the healthy relationship between these two characters. *not to mention ken dolls did have occupation*

Why would women be more relational than men if we are supposed to relate with each other?
@blondetapperware8289
@blondetapperware8289 2 месяца назад
Well, yes. Both men and women relate to each other. It is impossible to look at the male body or the female body and try to understand it by itself. It is only in relation to the other that it becomes clear. And that says something really beautiful about humanity as a whole: there is no "default" human body. There is no default human. Instead, there are two kinds who are made for relationship by nature. No human can withstand social isolation for long periods of time. It is just the case that women are especially relational. We can see an example of this clearly in a woman's reproductive system. Unlike a man who (biologically) has a very minimal and detached role in procreation (He only offers his sperm. The rest of the process takes place entirely within the woman), the woman is involved in the creation and her relationship with the child intimately at every step. Many women who have given birth describe feelings of this relationship being so deep that they cannot visualize themselves apart from their child. They feel like their lives are intrinsically connected to them, even after gestation.

Ken understands the intrincacies of "freedom" and grows as a person, the Barbie World under "masculine rule" prospers before the Kens are psychologically manipulated into fighting each other by entitled women (Barbies) and the status quo is restored and finally Barbie and Ken recognize they need each other to actually thrive (nuclear family). I said it before and I'll say it again: Barbie may be the most hilarious (unintentional) parody I've ever seen.

Right for all but the last point. Hollywood could never. Ken and Barbie don't realize that they need each other, but that they can only thrive atomized from each other. In other words, "It's Barbie and it's Ken." She point blank tells him he needs to be Ken without her.

9:05 Barbie comes to understand that there's more to the world than Barbie Land and that not everything is as it seems. She runs away because she doesn't want to be in ignorant bliss and can clearly see that the real world is not as she was told it was. That's why she runs away, she doesn't want to just go back to the way things were, she's been exposed to the real world, and it has piqued her interest. It's not about her changing her motivation entirely, she still wants to live in Barbie Land however there's a part of her that's telling her that she can't just ignore all the lies that were told to her. It's not bad writing when a character is exposed to a world that is entirely different to what they were told it was like and wants to explore it.

I can see how this story, and that speech (which gave me zero feels) would be revelatory to someone raised within very rigid traditional Western gender roles and isolated from most modern discourse. I do know people like that and have watched them have some of these first realizations. But this movie still isn't the amazing experience it was hyped to be. There is so much Barbie lore they could have added, like the Happy Family line having the first elderly Barbie couple, the grandparents! That could have gone with their aging gracefully message. I think That Star Wars girl channel pointed out something that most channels who criticized this movie aren’t pointing out (probs bc they don’t know). This movie is portraying this idea that kens are homeless & don’t have jobs but in actual reality of Barbie universe when look at ads, toys, animated movies/tv shows kens did have occupation. I remember Ken being a groomer, merman, cowboy, surfer etc but obviously this would destroy the narrative of the story. If Mattel really wanted a film director coming from “female perspective” they could’ve hired any female director who knew the source material because Greta herself admitted she didn’t know & did not grew up with Barbie but she was obviously hired because she’s a feminist filmmaker who’s well known for indie films like lady bird and little women, now she’s going to be a screen writer for Snow White remake. In actual reality Mattel had 40% of CEO’s but again it would destroy the narrative of the story. The moms monologue was all over the place, I could not relate to this speech, never in my life I felt embarrassed in the theaters!!! To me the most insane part is how Gosling got nominated for best supporting actor while Robbie got nominated for nothing. If that doesn't say anything, I don't know what will.

This whole video was great! I’m so glad you didn’t give us a long history lesson on what Barbie is, her influence, etc and just jumped into your problems with the movies. Despite the lengths you had to edit the video so you didn’t get struck by the (unfair) copyright stuff, it was hilarious, had me laughing! Thank you for this gem of pink covered shit of a movie! Hopefully, you can cover some other movies or media in the future that being you more joy than pain. Cheers to you!

Barbie could be like Paddington with nuance regarding adults behaving finnaly like adults while letting girls explore and have fun. Barbie could be an aspirational character, a pink hyper competent freak of nature

In a parallel universe they got halfway through shooting this movie and realized, ‘Everything we’re doing with Ken is just funnier and more coherent. Let’s just stop and make that movie instead.’ And that would have probably been an all-time classic comedy.

Wait, I'm leaving another comment cause yesterday I got distracted and forgot to finish the video. -_- So the first thing that came into my mind when I left the theatre in my stupid pink outfit, feeling like a fool, in utter shock and confusion by what I had just witnessed, the first thing I thougt was: "wait, this is actually everything that could have gotten wrong with the LEGO movie, but... barbie". And I'm so glad I'm not the only one who immediately made the comparison between the two! I've now watched several video essays on the barbie movie, and this is by far the best and most entertaining I've seen. IT EVEN HAS A BIBBLE. But the last part about the LEGO movie really made me scream, cause I have waited so long for someone to talk about this phenomenon specifically. I think there are so many interesting discussion we could make about the peculiar task of adapting a popular toy line into a big budget movie. And analizing the decisions that were taken during the making of Barbie and the LEGO movie respectedly, I think that the lego one succeded in every aspect the other has failed.

yk what i thought the film was going to be about after learning barbie needed to go to the real world to find her depressed human (then finds out it's bc mother and daughter aren't getting along)? I thought the film would be about barbie getting these two to mend their relationship and it would focus on building their characters and establishing emotional attachments for the audience. That would have been a simple, wholesome plot with good stakes, and you could have had them all bonding only for it to be revealed near the end that barbie is doing this for selfish reasons or something and then mother and daughter get mad at her for like manipulating them and we have a brief separation before they reunite. If we'd wanted to throw in some social commentary about patriarchy and feminism then we could have done that along the way, i'm sure. But I'm convinced this film didn't exist to tell a story, it just existed so the writer could tell everyone her political views. Which, imo as someone who aspires to be a fiction writer, is not a good enough reason for this film to exist. Many, many people have written beautifully crafted stories to present a message they believe in. There is no excuse for this film to not have done that. The only reason I enjoyed the film was because of the way it looked and the fact Margo Robbie and Ryan Gosling are great actors. This film has no substance. i wrote a more coherent plot in 10 seconds in my head while i was in the cinema than anyone working on that film did in months.

I’m so glad people are finally voicing their dissatisfaction for this movie. I was so excited for this film. I thought it was going to be like a live action Life in the Dreamhouse. I watched it at home as soon as it came out and I couldn’t even sit through it all. This was not a Barbie movie, this was not even a family movie. I just wanted to have a fun time not be lectured on how the patriarchy has oppressed women. The internet’s reaction to this movie actually gaslit me into thinking we watched different movies. I’m so glad I’m not actually going insane and that I’m not the only one who thinks this. (Also the film feels so hostile towards the Barbie brand itself. Even the fact that they call her “Stereotypical Barbie” instead of like “Classic Barbie” that feels is so mean spirited.)

It's funny you should mention the potential story arc for Barbie. Since that's basically the story I'm writing. Except the main character is more like a Bratz doll than a Barbie and her story arc is basically the reverse of this. She starts off believing her base doll is more harmful than helpful and that she needs to over compensate for that to truly make a difference and empower her human companion and others. Over the course of the story she meets people who were inspired by her doll in one way or another and she realizes it's not so black and white. Resulting in her ending up a healthier well balanced individual by the end. She even befriends a Barbie-like doll. It's still very much a work in progress, but that's the general idea.

What most people miss about 'Barbie' the character, is that she is not a real human, nobody can be her cause she is not real, she is a doll. She really isn't a feminist icon but a female icon She is not here to command a girl power break of molds movement and all that jazz, she is here to sell an escapism, cause she is a toy, a girly toy! Like guys?? Let's not forget she is still the very spoiled daughter of a multimillionaire company! she is not a relatable girl with everyday problems, she is not. But that doesn't mean she is something bad. 'Barbie is everything you want to be' yeah! Cause she is a doll! She is a toy! She is an entreteniner, a medium you can escape to a perfect little pink fantasy A piece of plastic is NOT responsable to educate your children. Barbie has little to no voice on telling your daughter or son how a woman should be or act or even dress. And that same multimillionaire company is not either! Can we agree on that?? (I'm pretty sure they care more about sales!) Barbie is a nice, pretty, talented, and forever young woman. Likes to have fun with her friends and family and put on cute clothes. She is rich and popular but also kind and smart! She can trully be anything she wants cause she is just that cool! And like, thats it! There is no further depht to her character cause it doesn't have to be! As a toy she is a blank canvas you can fill any way you want! So just have fun with her! That's all In conclusion, just go watch Barbie life in the Dreamhouse. (Also I just found hilarious how the movie states a 'normal down to earth Barbie' would be a great idea when a doll like that literally got produced once and it was a total faliure. Girls want fairy mermaid princesses in sparkly shiny gownds guys, stop saying they don't)

I think being fooled by marketing is only part of the issue. When movies tackle certain themes, you can be seen as a bigot for being against said movie, even if the themes aren't good or well implemented. I remember trying to warn my friends about barbie, saying something along the lines of "when big companies take an animated property that has good lessons and morals, and try to condense it into a live action film, they usually do a bad job." And i got accused of 'hating like a man' and 'not being a girls girl.'
