There are lots of excellent bare metal options out there nowadays, but what about achieving tonal variance in the metallics that matches the worn patina seen on so many Cold War-era aircraft? Time for some experimentation!

From here; looks like the 'rusted/corroded aluminum effect' is more apparent on both wing root areas....... A nice lesson in metalizer colors; and opposed to the general thought of only using 'gloss black color' as a base, I never thought of using white or gunship grey or even a translucent shade of emerald or sapphire color over the gray base before the metallic for certain effects...nice work..!!

Have you tried pencil tips graphite, to polish? There are various tones (the number on the pencil)...

I think you could marble in different tones for panel variation too (same glossiness)... do you think it's for 1/32 only? Or large 1/48 as well ... I've 1/72 Russian bombers - I think these need a cleaner look at that scale.... I've an Dragon 1/32 P51 just waiting to experiment on before the Tamya P51.... thanks and cheers

would you do a series on how to clear coating metal finishes properly. I don't really like the clear coating over metal finish look, anyways to bring the naked metal finish back after a gloss clear coating?

To me, not an experienced modeler, looking at the Sabre for example, the variances appear as squares, rectangles Cool it be that different panels have different age metals, and therefore different shades?

You will find one beautiful sheet of bare metal on Air Force One and all the other aircraft assigned to the 89th Special Airlift Mission airfcraft....it's called: cleaning & buffing after every mission :)

I'm wondering what might happen if, instead of using an underlying tonal variation, you used a gloss/matte variation? Gloss black marbled with a matte coat?

+Scott Roby two main challenges with that as I see it from some past attempts at sheen variation. First is that it's hard as hell to see what you're spraying when it's a clear. Second is that Airframe Aluminum and the other high-shines really depend on a smooth, shiny undercoat, so there's a good chance that anything matte could break that magic. I've thought about doing something like that for non-NMF aircraft though, and every time I've tried it's come out looking terrible. Not ready to give up yet, but it's a different nut to crack, for sure.

How do you apply the salt? It's a technique I've been wanting to try but I'm not clear on how to make it adhere to the surface for painting over.

Use lukewarm water (may need some surface tension breaker added - you don't want it to bead), apply salt, then hit it with warm air from a blow dryer on low
