Following the most controversial episode of Nick's Top 50 list, he's back this week to reveal three more stars from his rankings. This time around, he's got an undersized big-man who dominated on the glass, a prolific scorer who helped form one of the most efficient duos in league history, and one of the great 7-foot shooters the game has seen. What are your thoughts on this week's players? Let Nick know in the comments!

Who's your favorite player from this episode?
@semi6544
@semi6544 2 года назад
Charles Barkley. I grew up a Sixers fan. I am a Sixers fan today. The first time I became a bigger player fan than team fan was when the Sixers traded Barkley to the Suns. The Suns became my favorite team because Barkley was traded there. I believe Barkley more than any player all-time outplayed his physical gifts. Barkley was a 6'4 PF. If you didn't know who Barkley was and looked at his career stats; you would have guessed he was probably 6'9 or 6'10. He was exciting to watch. Barkley could dribble, pass, shoot, and dunk on you. Very exciting to watch and exciting to hear his comments.

Another thing about Dirk that wasn't mentioned but probably should have been. As the only all-star on his team, he carried the Mavs to 11 consecutive seasons of 50+ wins. That might seem arbitrary, until you realize the only teams to do better are the Showtime Lakers and the Duncan-Popovic Spurs, and the next teams that are comparable are the 60s Celtics and the 80s Celtics. Dirk by himself accomplished a streak of regular-season excellence that has only been done by the greatest dynasties of all time.
@velikoslovog7526

Should be noted that Dallas might have won in 2006 had it not been for the refs. Now if Dirk had 2 chips, he'd probably be the universally accepted no.2 PF instead of everyone kinda having Barkley, Giannis, The Pedo, KG and Dirk kinda randomly assigned from 2-6

@@SirGOATT so you are counting Dirk's loyalty to Dallas against him? He was recruited by the Lakers and other teams. He took less to stay in Dallas and chase his ring with the team that drafted him rather than pull a LeBron or a Durant and find an easier title path elsewhere with other stars. Cuban buying all his players an Xbox and having premium towels in the locker room kinda pales in comparison to Dirk being loyal and steadfast in the face of 2006 near miss and 2007 adversity.

The 2011 Mavericks made the greatest title run of all time. There is no team in NBA history that defeated more prime superstars on their way to winning a Championship. Dwayne Wade, LaMarcus Aldridge, Paul Gasol, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Chris Bosh and Lebron James all met their demise in the 2011 post season to a Mavs team with a single superstar player in Dirk.

Something that often gets buried in that 2011 run is how it looked like Dallas was going to be in for yet another disappointing postseason. In that first round against Portland, they had a game where they blew something like a 24pt lead in the 4th quarter. After that game the narrative about Dirk being soft, and unable to lead a team to a title started up again. Even me, a Dallas fan since I started watching the NBA seriously in 2004, thought "Here we go again. Portland tied the series and has the momentum now. They're going to knock out Dallas in the 1st round again." And I was still hurting after the disappointment of 06 and 07 (doubly so because I live in Miami). But they regained the composure, and Dirk closed them out in 6 with two very good games to close out the series. The rest is history. A Dirk who wasn't battle tested, and who wasn't on a mission may have let that loss get to him. But he was on a mission to get that elusive ring. Nick should have talked about that game 2 of the NBA Finals. That was the real turning point of the series, scoring the last 2 baskets in a huge 4th quarter comeback. I still get chills thinking about it.

For me Karl Malone is the prime example of why looking at only stats is the wrong way to evaluate these players
@SuperSonic_868
@SuperSonic_868 2 года назад
@Eternal Boss Reborn Not sure what Seun's answer would be, but I would agree with his original statement. We can't ONLY look at stats. Imagine a stat nerd who never watched any basketball analyzing Westbrook. He's a stat machine. Great on paper, great for stat padding, terrible for team dynamics, and terrible when it comes to winning.
@seun0125
@seun0125 2 года назад
@Eternal Boss Reborn y’all both have contributed to my original point. For me I believe the anecdotal “eye test” is just as valuable in analyzing how great a player was as the overall stats. In Malone’s case, I’d argue he’s been overrated in this list largely because of his stats (particularly his stats that largely focus on his longevity). Especially when we put that with the anecdotal evidence where many people who covered the league didn’t rate him as highly as this. Again it’s just my opinion, but I believe that matters.
@gumballwaterson1957
@gumballwaterson1957 2 года назад
@Eternal Boss Reborn I'm generally of the mind that stats are more important in the regular season than the playoffs where the stakes are higher and dumb plays cost more. Malone, for example, may have averaged great numbers in a series, but the stats won't tell you the game situation when he was doing his damage. For example, consistently missing free throws late in a game when the score is close doesn't pop out in overall game or series stats but it's pretty clear when watching the game that the impact is much more that just missed free throws.
@Milosenpotion
@Milosenpotion Год назад
Karl not only has the stats to show he's clearly underrated in this list, but also has the accolades. Almost nobody can match him in terms of MVPs, 1st team All NBA, All Stars, etc. Almost nobody can match him in terms of stats. Maybe it's you who is biased (prob by media)? The man played in the smallest market in the NBA, and they were a very good to great team his entire career. His owner DIDN'T BELIEVE IN GOING INTO THE LUXURY TAX. Do you know how insane that is, and what a diff it makes? If they go into the lux tax in 97 98 (2 of the closest finals ever), then suddenly he's a 2x champ, the only person to beat Jordan in the finals (twice), Jordan has 4 rings, etc. It changes everything. Now where does he rank? He's very easily top 10, prob around #6 or 7. But instead, because he had a cheap owner and played in a tiny market - 2 things out of his control - he's being compared to Dirk at 16 which is ridiculous.

Agreed. I like the way Jxmy did his top 75 list by creating an algorithm. Because Luka has so many records broken, he ended up in the top 75, but because it was weighted, career points, assists, rebounds, titles, all star appearances, etc. still had him below guys like Kahwai who have more finals appearances, more career points, more titles.
