The Yankees also had a tie that year and played 163 games. Maris hit his 61st in the 163rd game. Neither Maris nor Ruth hit a home run in the tie games. Judge hit his 61st in the 155th game, so I think he has the record and Maris keeps the asterisk although tied. But if Judge hits 1 more he is the undisputed home run king. Bonds, McGuire and Sosa had obvious "advantages", but all know they were wrong. At best, they only deserve asterisks, they have their money, they don't deserve to be in the HOF. Thank you Jesus. The advantage with steroids is faster recovery and more plate appearances. More chances = more home runs and the extra power didn’t hurt either. All those smooth brains out there thinking it’s only about distance have never been prescribed steroids for an injury. They’re borderline miraculous. He didn’t beat the record by 40 HRs. It’s perfectly reasonable for the juice to account for the extra 13 homers.

I understand people being angry at the steroid era, but there's literally nothing we can do about it now. Players reacted to their environment. Yes, Fay Vincent sent out a memo in 1991 saying that steroids/PEDs were banned and that there would be consequences for using them. But there was no way of enforcing those consequences, and no specific details about what those consequences would be. So when McGwire and Sosa and Bonds and Clemens and all the others were using the late '90s/early '00s, the reasons to take PEDs were: quicker recovery from injury, meaning increased playing time-->better strength and stamina-->improved individual performance-->improved team performance-->improved chances of playing in the postseason-->contention for major postseason awards (individual glory)-->bigger contracts, adding up to perhaps tens of millions of extra dollars in contract endorsement earnings. And what was to stop them? An unenforceable memo. It sucks that this was the case, but we can't change that now.

The biggest effect is that it allows 'Roid users to play much longer without having their body breaking down or their skills declining that is a natural process of an aging athlete. It also helps them recover from workouts and injuries much faster than a "clean" player. Look at how little time Bonds spent on the DL late in his career...it wasn't physical fitness and clean living that caused it.
