Lots of people liked to claim Barry was "elevator music," but secretly, he had a huge fan base and still does. Very good voice, good lyrics and tune. He's unique.
"Lola had to go through some sh!t" One of the best summations of this disco ditty ever. I was born into a Barry household, with a ‘70s housewife mother playing his records all day, so not sure whether I’d be a fan otherwise. I don’t particularly care for love ballads, and even my wife derides “gushy” music----but she’s a Barry fan as well. However, as others have stated, in my 51 years on the planet, I've never heard a more beautiful love ballad than "Weekend in New England," and it certainly must be one of the greatest love songs ever written/performed. This sort of music comes down to sincerity, which Manilow has in spades. You don’t see that today. I’m not knocking millennials, but I am knocking the music industry that mostly feeds them drivel. Only raw, heartfelt sincerity could pull off a line like “With you, there’s a heaven, so Earth’s not so bad,” and you knew he truly means it.
It’s always so funny to me when there’s such a classic song you just assume everybody has heard it at one time or another I love reactions when someone has never ever heard it
In the forties they used to have nightclubs, such as the this, and they had a lot of classy people, dining and dancing. No, I never went. I was born in 1948. I really wish those clubs were still around. I love your reaction... it's as if you're experiencing what's going on in the video! You are definitely the queen😊❤️
My mum once met und talked with him in Berlin. She said he was an extremely pleasant person who seemed quite intelligent und he stayed there for almost 3 hours that day talking with his fans und signing everything they wished. An iconic und humble entertainer simply having his fun in life. :-)
It's kinda crazy to think of how much fun we've all had dancing throughout the decades to this tragic tale. 💃 Barry is the best. I got to see him at Boston Garden about 5 years ago. It was a fantastic show. He's 77 now and was still on tour when the virus cancelled everything. My favorite Barry song is "Could It Be Magic".
I was lucky enough to see Barry Manilow in concert in 1987. He was one of the most amazing showmen of that time! The scenes, prop, costumes and lighting were simply amazing! Neil Diamond in concert was awesome too, but Barry Manilow concerts were simply over the top entertainment!
Barry Manilow was one of the great talents in the music industry. He could sing, write, compose etc. I grew up on him along with many others. Back in the day he also wrote numerous famous commercial jingles. In one of his stage shows back in the day he did a melody of them to.
Being a teen in the late 80s-early 90s, my friends gave me a lot of shit for liking Manilow. Everyone was listening to MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice. Where are they now? Barry Manilow's songs are timeless. Listen to "Weekend in New England", "Can't smile without you", " Daybreak", and "Bandstand Boogie".
Same. I got a lot of grief over the Barry songs in my rotation. But I love all the pop and rock, from fluffy to psychedelic to metal from the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
This song makes me cry. My father and I would always dance to this. I was less than 8 when this was still being played on the radio. One of the few good memories of him.
The Copacabana nightclub opened in NYC in 1940. Many stars performed there, and was used in many movies. It closed after 80 years this past May due to Covid-19. It plans to reopen in 2121. Famous , iconic club.
One of my favourite Barry Manilow songs along with The Old Songs. Copa reminds me of I Go To Rio by Peter Allen, both still get me grooving! I also love Peter's Don't Wish Too Hard, Fly Away and Tenterfield Saddler. All great songs to react to.
Barry was my very first concert.....my dad took my older sister, my younger brother and me....I must have been 10 or 11.....and I’ve seen him many times since. Puts on a great show! He’s so talented! He was the piano player/back up singer for Bette Miller.
I loved that I adore Barry I've always wanted to see him live I'm 67yrs old so shame on me I don't think he will be touring any more but I hope he changes his mind and comes back to England one day because I will be sat in the front row I can promise you that India so please more Barry love your reaction ❤️from Denise in England 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧💖😘XX
Fun fact: in the 1980s there was a made-for-tv movie about this story, with Barry Manilow starring as Tony. It then ran as a stage show for a couple of years. I'm sure some footage is still out there somewhere. Manilow's music is just so singable, I always loved it for when I felt like singing, or it's good for those bad nights on occasion when you're having a pity party and you need a good cry lol. I saw him in concert once at Radio City Music Hall, he puts on a fun show.
When you reacted to the line, '...she lost her love' with a "NO" and you arms up in the air, young me was with you. I'm not sure when I first heard this...maybe the eighties...but we all sympathised with Lola. There seemed to be a calypso vibe around the time of this song, because there was also the Peter Allen song, "Rio de Janeiro" that was also hugely popular. I reckon you might enjoy that one too.
I have always like Copacabana. It not only tells a moving story but you get to hear what happened to Lola decades later so it become the narrotive of someone life rather than just an event. It also makes you think about how the world changes and you can either accept those changes and change with it on stay in the past with your memories for comfort.
He still tours, I saw him not so long ago at the O2 (huge venue) in London, danced all night LOVED it, he started with a full on full on rave, glow sticks waving by the thousand, beats pumping out, he still parties x
Love this song by Barry Manilow!! Yet another song me and my 4 sisters like to sing karaoke to after a few drinks, lol. Great reaction!! You're Awesome!! 💜
Barry Manilow was my first concert. I was in early grade school and my mom took me with her. I can still remember how crazy some of the ladies went when he said he needed some palm trees for his next song (Copacabana).....they were jumping up and down by the stage screaming, "I'm a palm tree, Barry!"
I also grew up in a Barry household. I was always most impressed that Bette Midler started out singing backing vocals for him. 'Could this be magic' would be my pick too.
1st! Love this song! Barry is wonderful. Try listening to some old standards, like Moonlight Serenade, done on Singin' with the Big Bands. Lovely music...
You were the first reaction person I followed. And I still love you so much! I love your reactions, your energy, just everything about you. Thank you for bring some joy to all of us!
Also for many years Barry added lyrics to Les Elgart's "Bandstand Boogie" that was featured on American Bandstand on Saturdays overall from 1957 to 1989.
Absolutely!!!"Could this be magic" is the joint..his best song ever..im African American Female..love me some ole Barry Manilow..shhh low key dont tell nobody 😎
I'm so glad to see you do another reaction video to one of Barry Manilow's songs. He is one of the all-time greats and one of my personal favorites. The next Barry Manilow songs that I'd love for you to do reaction videos for are "Even Now", "Can't Smile Without You" and "Daybreak".
Nope. They just play two or three songs every morning to time us at lockers, and they just left this on loop for three weeks. It’s normally changed every week.
LOL I never fully listened to those words until today! I love that song! Didn't realize all the words!!! You need to watch his Jump Shout Boogie, when I was in high school gym class we could take "Aerobics" (this new way of working out! hahahaha think precursor to Zumba), and we had a routine to Jump Shout Boogie!
The Copacabana was and is a nightclub in New York City. It’s current location is in Times Square. Barry’s Copacabana was the original nightclub that operated earlier in the 50’s and 60’s.
Back in my younger days I loved Berry Manilow’s voice. He was really a popular singer. The thing about Berry, you either loved him or hated him, very little in between❤️❤️
Saw him live a few times... Puts on a great show.... I have this on DVD.. This is from the 1978 concert that was on HBO.... I remember telling my father and brother to shut up with their fighting so I could watch the show as a spunky 7 year old... LOL
I heard a story about Barry Manilow at an airport years ago, being mistaken for Joe Montana (49’er QB) when the excited fan asked for Joes autograph, Barry good naturedly and not letting on, signed Joes name. I thought that was sweet.
The Copacabana WAS an actual nightclub in New York City. I'm not sure whether it's still around or not, but back in the day, it was THE hot place to be. I'm sure the song was not true, although...who knows; maybe, in its history, something like this COULD have happened. Great story telling by Manilow. LOVE his voice! GREAT reaction, as always
I’m new to your channel and your choice of Barry Manilow whome I love listening to and your expressions of what his song was about, you got me hooked .I subscribed right then and there.🥳🤩😍🥰😆😃😁😁
The Copacabana in this song refers the the night club in New York City. It moved to several different locations throughout their 80 years. The last space was in Times Square. Unfortunately I say "was"... they became another victim of the pandemic and permanently shut their doors in May.
