Excellent job providing all the details here! One note I'll make is everyone needs a day off to unwind! Without that day off, it would be difficult for our muscles to repair when there's strain from all the contracting and expanding! And of course, hawks are the same way!

Thanks, that’s exactly why Peggy had Wednesday off! And it really works, I have done intense fitness trying with falcons before and then when flying then after a rest day it’s like a different bird!

I'm a US-American falconer in Germany and getting ready for my first Harris hawk, who will move in in August if all goes well. I recently found your videos and love them! So much great information and helpful training tips. Keep them coming!

@@MercerFalconry I definitely am! Going out tomorrow with my mentor and her Harris for our last crow hawking of the season. I am in awe of this bird, and she has accepted me as her trainee! :-)

Excellent, it’s really nice when you start to build that bond with a hawk, not many people get to experience it

I did enjoy this video, I enjoy seeing Harris Hawks following on , and by the response you can understand your Hawk. Personally I am fortunate to fly daily on fairly long typical days, so the fitness becomes natural to our needs as the season moves on. My hawks weight will vary so much due to him being a hunting hawk and I’m a one catch feed up person, we fly the next day at a heavier weight and slowly he will burn weight over the next few days, I could almost guess his weight by the altitude he has during the trip out, although of course we do weight them. Some days I think the hawk is training me, I loose weight during the season for sure. Great video.
@MercerFalconry
@MercerFalconry 2 года назад
Oh of course, I often say to people getting their first bird that the hawk will teach the falconer more than the falconry training the hawk

So, its basically a body building cource for raptors. I wonder what do other raptors think when they see your bird flying... ''Hot damn, this dude is jacked! I bet roids!''

Great video, always providing great information. How did you get your barn owl to fly the circle around you before returning to the glove ? Did you use a lure ?

First of all thank you for your videos and for sharing all this amazing knowledge I am an apprentice falconer and am “assigned” to a Harris Hawk (Maximus). Love my new best friend. I have a question, this training sessions you show on this video, how long do they usually take? Or that varies?

Hi Dan! This may be a bit of a stupid question but how do you call your birds to your hand if you don't know how to whistle? Thanks!
@MercerFalconry
@MercerFalconry Год назад
A lot of falconers wear a whistle round their neck, same kinds of whistle used in dog training

What quarry do you hunt with your birds
@ryanfreed4467
@ryanfreed4467 2 года назад
So how do you get the bird to return to the perch after you call it to the glove? My red tail just sits on my glove.
@MercerFalconry
@MercerFalconry Год назад
I train them to the perch in the same way to a glove, putting food on the perch for them to fly back to, it’s also a safe space for them, if anything ever spooks them or goes wrong they take themselves back to the perch. Quite quickly they learn that they have to go back to the perch in order to come back to the glove for more food

Why don’t u use spinning lures easier then running around from perch to perch

Thanks for the reply i hope fully will be getting my first passage peregrine next fall, and my first falcon period. So im just trying to read and learn as much as I can about working with a falcon in general. Is it the same process as a passage red tail generally. Manning to free flight ?
@MercerFalconry
@MercerFalconry 2 года назад
There is a bit more lure work involved with the falcons but other than that yes much of it is the same!

I’m not sure how possible it would be in London, the best thing to do would be to check on Google maps for the closest falconry centre to yourself
