I got a new bird of prey, a crested caracara. In this video I show briefly how to prepare for a new bird, and the first few days with her.
The bird doesn’t yet have a name, so please leave a suggestion as a comment bellow!

Hey dan, it would mean a lot to me if you would reply to my question! There's this juvenile brahminy kite that comes to my backyard for over a month now. I think it's a juvenile because I've read that juvenile brahminy kites are darker and develop that white colour around their neck only when they are adult. I've formed a nice relationship with the kite and it comes for food to my backyard every single day. It even takes food from my hand. However it doesn't really like me touching it. So my question is, is it okay if I set up anklets and jesses on to it's feet forcily and provide it with a proper housing? Im just worried if I do so its gonna be aggressive and lose its trust on me. Is a bird of prey okay to be done that way especially when it's just straight out from the wild?
@MercerFalconry

I would pick for her name: Magellan. Why because she in reality from Tierra del Fuego. Thou the breed extend from Argentina to Florida. Caracara are birds that prefer dry areas rather that moist or jungle, I think I could be wrong. Now, you might have chosen a hard bone to chew on by picking this breed of bird, I think. The diet seems to be quite difficult, and they are not exactly a bird of prey rather a bird of opportunity, correct me if I'm wrong. I think I found a dietary sample, I'm going to try and paste it...Behavior A bold, opportunistic raptor, the crested caracara is often seen walking around on the ground looking for food. It mainly feeds on carcasses of dead animals, but steals food from other raptors, raids bird and reptile nests, and takes live prey if the possibility arises (mostly insects or other small prey [such as small mammals, small birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, crabs, and worms], but at least up to the size of a snowy egret). It may also eat fruit. It is dominant over the black and turkey vulture at carcasses. The crested caracara takes live prey that has been flushed by wildfire, cattle, and farming equipment. The opportunistic nature of this species means that the crested caracara seeks out the phenomena associated with its food, e.g. wildfires and circling vultures. It is typically solitary, but several individuals may gather at a large food source (e.g. dumps). Breeding takes place in the Southern Hemisphere spring/summer in the southern part of its range, but timing is less strict in warmer regions. The nest is a large, open structure, typically placed on the top of a tree or palm, but sometimes on the ground. The typical clutch size is two eggs. Young adult, showing the distinctive light 'windows' in the wings

Hey Dan. Little over a month watching your channel and I just wanted to ask if you have any suggestions on what the best bird of prey to start with as an apprentice falconer. I live in the U.S where there are a crap ton of laws and regulations to falconry but I have been doing my research on the sport and I hope to eventually become a falconer just like you.
@MercerFalconry
@MercerFalconry 2 года назад
That’s difficult to answer because I’m not too clued up on how it all works in America but a lot of it comes down to what land is around you and what you want out of the bird

I appreciate it Dan. I live specifically in the North Eastern part of the U.S. (New York) where there is prey such as squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks. I’m guessing the best bird for over here is the Red Tailed Hawk although they can get quite moody 😄 Thanks a lot Dan 🙏

I’m not sure, I don’t hunt with my birds, they are all used for displays. I recon it would be difficult as they a largely scavenging birds
@Therzis
@Therzis Год назад
Crested caracaras hunt a lot if that's what they need to do, even birds. They mostly hunt rodents and pickup any small reptile or bug they see but you can get them used to hunt birds and big prey. However, they are not good hunters for many of reasons. They are VERY rarely used for falconry for this reason and you'll find almost nothing falconry related about them online. They are very slow compared to most birds of prey and you would definitely need to use new ways of hunting that are quite different from what's normally used in falconry because they aren't made for that. Most people see them as complete or almost complete scavengers but you can get them to hunt a lot if you do it properly but they are hard to train because they are so intelligent they end up figuring out ways to train you and make it easier for them

Birds of prey tend to be seasonal breeders, because they need to be as light as possible to fly the reproductive organs tend to shrink out of the breeding season. I couldn’t comment on the exact biology of raptor reproduction but a lot more comes into it than just the age of the birds
