In this video I will be showing you how I trained the fastest animal in the world, well kind of. We have likely all herd of the peregrine falcon, but there are other species of falcon too! Some people argue that the Gyrfalcon is in fact faster than the peregrine. Unfortunately, I do not have a pure gyrfalcon but I do have a Gyr hybrid, so depending who you ask, in this video I show how to fly the fastest animal in the world!
Flying the fastest animal in the world is not easy, while flying a falcon you must know how to swing a lure. This is a challenge in itself and I will not be detailing the exact process of how to lure swing in this video.
Knowing how to fly a falcon, and how to train a bird of prey can be broken down into key steps and stages. Training birds to free fly will differ between every bird and trainer and each step will take different amounts of time and patience, however these are the steps I take when training falcons for falconry displays.

She is truly magnificent. I do love the predator birds, but I also love their "meals". Have always had rodents etc as pets so not sure I could falcon. But I do appreciate your channel and allowing me to see the process.

Hi Dan - just a few questions for you if you don't mind! Firstly, when Skye's weight went down to 941, were you concerned and increase her food or was that still an ideal flying weight for her? Secondly, how do you calculate how much food to feed each bird? Is there a formula for weight of bird to how much food they require? And lastly what's the name of the telemetry you use that shows live on your phone? Thank you so much for your time and your videos - my daughter and I are learning so much!

Hi, I’m very happy my videos are helping you and your daughter learn, that’s why I’m making them! I wasn’t concerned with her weight being at 941 because she spent a lot of time off during the bird flu outbreak so she had fat reserves, as well as weighing her daily I check her body, with experience you begin to learn how the birds body should feel, you can check the keel to feel how much tissue is around it and on the sides of the body under the wings. Unfortunately there isn’t just an easy formula to follow, every bird is individual and by checking these things you start to learn how much food the bird requires to keep level or gain weight, it all just comes with practice. The telemetry I use is Marshall’s GPS system. Hope all of that helps 😁

Cool video and a beautiful bird.it looks like a pure Gyr.very cool. As to speeds Peregrines are only the fastest in a stoop. In flat out horizontal flights gyr’s are the fastest. Not only are they the fastest they can maintain top speed for alot longer than peregrines. You should check out Ben Woodruff’s falconry channel. He’s very knowledgeable and goes into a lot of detail on subjects.

It depends on the birds appetite really, usually it’s just one step per day as it requires the full reward but the speed of progress is really up to the bird

I've saved a baby bird, falcon/buzzard. It had been between railways lines. My guess is that were her first attempts at flying. When I got her, the right wing had a mark of blood and the bigger middle fingers were without flesh on them and the right leg and all the fingers clasped and hurt also. After some veterinary assessment, we continued with vitamins in the water and later with dust against parasites on her. I succeeded to let her be touched with a feather. It is calm and quiet. Problem is that it now pecks at her good leg. It already destroyed another finger from it. The vet says that they do auto-mutilate. How do you stop that? Do you do assessments?

Hi Dan, having rewatched a few of you videos not for the second or third time either. Having spent the last 2 years researching and learning about B.O.P, it is an area that I would like to get more involved in, luckily I live in an area that has a few B.O.P centers in close travelling distance that I plan to try and become a volunteer in one of to learn more and gain experience before getting a bird of my own, (of course ensuring that before getting a bird have the other priorities in place flying permission, mews, awareness of appropriate veterinary services in local area) Would it be possible to get a video about your mews, the reasoning behind the choices you made, and things you would change if you were to re build, it also appears that you also choose to free loft you birds rather than having them tethered (based on the snippets observed in your daily life video) Also if possible a video or some advice on gaining permission to fly from land owners and farmers. Keep up the good work I look forward to seeing more great content from you in the future

Hi Chris, thanks for watching and enjoying the videos, watching the videos helps to support the birds and business so I appreciate it. It’s great you have centres close by to go and volunteer at, it also wouldn’t harm to try and reach out to any local falconers and ask if you can join them occasionally with their birds for a bit more 1 on 1 learning. I have a notebook with all my video ideas in and housing is definitely one in there that I am planning to do (when I get round to it!). Most of my birds are freelofted but some are tethered. I hadn’t thought about making a video about getting flying permission but I will add it to my list, I have actually just acquired a load more land so it would make sense to make a video about how I managed that. Keep an eye out because they will be made but I hope you appreciate that between flying all the birds and running it as a business it takes a bit of time to get the videos out, the next video that is almost done is Imprinting Vs Parent rearing

question buddy, what kind of meat did you give to the bird? especially for daily food. do you always used same meat to keep the bird health? because sometime bird loss their appetite, so how you think to keep their appetite?

She gets a mixture of chicken and beef regularly, and things like quail and rabbit as extra. If there is an appetite issue either the bird just isn’t hungry and is overweight or it has a health issue

Hi, a few questions, how does the falcon benefit from any of this? Since they can learn how to fly and also hunt prey for themselves, they can live well in the wild, what do they get from this training exactly?

It’s actually very difficult to live in the wild and only the very best of them survive, with me they get shelter from the weather, a guaranteed meal every day, vet care, and they get to fly free every day for their food, a falcons lifespan in captivity can be much longer than the lifespan of a wild falcon

Thank you! The outer layer of the beak is very similar to our finger nails so grows continuously, if they pick at enough bones in carcasses they can wear it down naturally but sometimes in captivity we have to help them with it to prevent it growing too long and cracking

There isn’t really an answer to what’s a minimum amount of flying to keep them fit, their fitness will kind of match how much work they are doing, if it’s not often they won’t be very fit but if flown every day can build up lots of fitness. And no I don’t plan to get a golden eagle, they are only really suitable for hunting and my birds are all for displays, would be way too dangerous to try and do a display with a golden eagle, someone’s small dog could disappear quite easily 😂

Was it necessary to cut off the tip of the beak? That's crud On the other hand, I like your video. Do Goshawks also trained in the same way?

Yes it was, their beaks grow like our finger nails and if left for too long they can break and crack and then the bird can get infections in their face
