Analyzing our own game video is the number one way to improve as basketball officials. Following closely behind is analyzing plays from others’ games. What can we learn from the officials on these plays? Let’s review positioning, working of the system, call accuracy, rules knowledge and game management. It all comes together on the court. Let’s look at Plays!

If you have a question about a play, adding a timestamp (MM:SS format) makes a huge difference in our ability to respond. Here is our linktree for additional content and communication avenues: linktr.ee/betterofficials

Play 3 - excellent call on white #4 for push in back on rebound. We need to get more of those!

Bonus play, 27:55, I don't believe the official was fooled. First, is it a blindside screen? I believe it was. Second, ball handler moves before screen is set causing defensive contact with screener before screener is set. Third, the screener's wide stance coupled with right hip and knee movement. Good call.

I believe there was a “Carry” near HC.

Agree. I had block mostly because of direction. Great play to dissect

bonus play, I think the Referee saw the defenders hip move and knee move out and was called for that.

Charge is my ruling. Defender established legal guarding position moving obliquely while ball handler crashes into the defender. Note: all players have a right to a position on the court as long as they establish the position legally. In my opinion, the defender played text book defense. I do agree about the mechanics of the calling official, it should be cleaner, especially at the high school level. -DW

Play #2 - saying the defender was moving forward is tough. We don't get to officiate the game in slo-mo or with the aid of a video machine. I think this call is good as is & if one felt the D was still moving forward, then yes, a block call would be good too. You're spot on about the C finding the other players after the made 3 & getting ready to officiate. I loved how the C didn't run away, but yes, he should have broke away a little sooner & put his head on a swivel to see across the floor & the impending play in front of him.

Block. Also, thank you for the video. Just a couple weeks ago at camp, I made the same mistake as play #2 essentially. I switched my eyes over to the player receiving the ball and missed the pass and crash in the paint as C. I felt like an idiot when I had a no call on the bodies on the floor. Definitely a tough one to shake off right away!

I really need your help regarding correctible errors. Im jam from the Philippines. We have a basketball tournament here and during our championship game in the fourth quarter with score tied at 66-66 with 1:54 remaining on the clock, a foul was called by my teammate which is a good call. We were on the defensive side, now there was an error regarding the foul, because instead of 4 fouls committed by my teammate, the table had an error in tallying the foul and said he had five fouls. Everyone knows that it was his 4th foul but the table had an error in tallying. We reviewed the video and we were right, its his fourth foul not the fifth foul. Both teams argued and we ended up cancelling our championship game. What should the correct decision be. Can we correct table error mistake in tallying fouls. Please i really want your help regarding this issue. Thank you, will be waiting for your reply and hopefully a video regarding this correctible error. Thank you

Badly need you help on this one. Because the opposing team insist the wrong error and they said it should not be corrected even if we have evidence showing that the error was made in talkying the fouls. They know there is an error in tallying but still insists

Sorry to hear about this, especially during a very competitive championship game! Rule 2 (Officials and Their Duties) Section 11 (Scorer’s Duties) Article 11 states: “[…] a bookkeeping mistake may be corrected at any time until the referee approves the final score […]” This sounds like a bookkeeping mistake to me. I’m sorry to be responding 3 months too late. What was the end result of this dilemma? As for “Correctable Errors”, it is my understanding that those are referring specifically to errors occurring from a Rule inadvertently being set aside. Your issue goes beyond the scope of that, as you haven’t inadvertently set any rules aside. What instead happened was a mistake in the scorekeeper’s book. This is distinctly different and important to consider, as it does not force you to adhere strictly to Rule 2 Section 10 (Correctable Errors).

Play #3 - If there is a push on a legal screen at the same time as there is a three-point attempt what happens to that attempt first if it goes in and/or if it misses?
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials Год назад
If there is a foul by any defensive player, continous motion would apply if the shooter had begun their habitual throwing (shooting) motion. If the try was successful the goal shall be scored. In either case, the foul would be penalized.

Play 5 - The dribbler gained an obvious advantage by carrying the ball mid court. should have been called.

26:00 Bonus Play: I’ve got a player with Team Control setting a screen with a wide stance outside of their vertical plane by not being approximately shoulder width apart, extending their hip into the path of the defender, and setting that screen behind a defender outside of their visual field without allowing the opponent one normal step backward without contact. Team Control Foul. Illegal screen all the way. My question is, how do you signal this team control foul (illegal screen) when reporting to the table? Is it the Block signal? Player Control signal (since Team Control is no longer recognized)? Something else? Thanks!

I use TC Mechanic and verbalize illegal screen

@@tomhickey9287 I believe I heard the signal for Team Control (fist punch) is no longer being utilized in High School mechanics. I could be mistaken.

Timestamp 15:55 Help me out. You say he "jumped off one, landed on two" but the camera angle from the baseline shows clearly that he gathered during the hop. Either foot can be his pivot. He took one step before being fouled.
@BetterOfficials
@BetterOfficials 9 месяцев назад
During the hop. As in, did not hold the ball until he was in the air?
@OpaTheOpenminded
@OpaTheOpenminded 9 месяцев назад
@laynemangum349 This play was very difficult for me, especially in a live game scenario. With the benefit of slow motion replays, I have it the same as you. The gather occurring as player has booth feet in the air, landing on both feet simultaneously with control of the ball. This grants them either foot becoming pivot (so no travel on their next step). I then see Blue 4 legally dislodging the ball, however Blue 20’s upper right arm illegally contacts White’s right arm, leading to a common foul. White was in the habitual shooting motion, however the ball had been legally dislodged prior to the illegal contact, meaning there was no continuation on a try for goal. That’s my take on it anyway, tough call! Anyone else?
@OpaTheOpenminded
@OpaTheOpenminded 9 месяцев назад
I have changed my opinion on that final bit. I think Blue 4’s legal dislodging of the ball and Blue 20’s illegal contact occur simultaneously. White (4?) is shooting 2 free-throws. Tough call & I could still be wrong. This is why we watch, we can only strive for continued growth.

Would a no call on the carry in Play #5 because of the game situation?
@tomhickey9287
@tomhickey9287 8 месяцев назад
That looked almost like a double dribble. At the division line, the dribbler lifts the ball with both hands and carries it across his body and starts a second dribble. This seems too obvious ignore. What did I miss?
@deankirkpatrick7658

no should have ben called - was an obvious advantage gained. I can see the officials not seeing it - but if they saw it - it should have been called
