Commenting on the prize, Stewart said, “I am truly honored to receive this award. I have long admired and been influenced by the work of Mark Twain, or, as he was known by his given name, Samuel Leibowitz.”
“For more than three decades, Jon Stewart has brightened our lives and challenged our minds as he delivers current events and social satire with his trademark wit and wisdom. For me, tuning into his television programs over the years has always been equal parts entertainment and truth”
- Deborah F. Rutter, Kennedy Center President
The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters, Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social injustice and personal folly.
As a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Stewart received a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). Previous recipients can be seen by scrolling down this page.
Capital One® is the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor as part of the bank’s three-year, $3 million gift to fund Comedy at the Kennedy Center, a signature program at the Center focused on elevating comedy as an art form and uniting the community through laughter.
The 23rd Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is under the direction of the creative team from Done + Dusted, the Kennedy Center’s producing partner for the Mark Twain Prize since 2018. This year’s ceremony marks the 23rd year that the Kennedy Center’s marquee comedy award will be broadcast nationally.
The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception in 1998.

@FenrirLupo
@FenrirLupo 6 месяцев назад
@@M3N04 How has Israel been abusing and attacking Palestinians nonstop before? Honest question, better if you can point me to some reliable sources. Many, even Israelis, disapprove of Netanyahu and the current government, but I find that it is always a missile, a kidnapping, or a suicide bombing against Israelis that reignite the conflict. My understanding is that Israel wants to be left alone and have peace while Palestine Muslims want to push all the Jews to the sea because they want the whole region to be reigned by Muslims. Many people say that the Jews stole the land. Jews had been living there for thousands of years, then there was the Jewish diaspora, then they started migrating back because of the constant persecution and hence decided they needed a place they could call their own. And what better place that the one that had more significance to their origins and beliefs. They bought back land from Arabs, and with their knowledge and resources, they worked and improved the land and the economy of the region. Why is it that the lands where the Israelis are settled are more developed and people are more well off? Then they get invaded by the surrounding Arab countries, time when the Palestinians are told to leave to not get caught in the conflict. There was 2 major conflicts regarding that (1948, 1967), They won both. Israel had won territory but they were forced by the UN to give it back, which they did. After all that and just because they want peace and legitimacy. If Palestinian leaders cared about their lands and their people, they would have been investing in better education and infrastructure. Palestinians in Gaza should not have elected Hamas. All the money they receive from global organizations is instead used to buy guns and indoctrinate their youth into hating others who don't share their belief, especially the jews, who they have next door. How are the Isrealis at fault for that?

I had to get it on the website but I would literally follow it day by day. He was hugely influential for me, in me becoming a journalist, in the content of my reporting but also in the kind of journalist I wanted to be. Bassem Youssef is right. Yeah the whole point of this is that this has been the truth since 00’s. I grew up all over the place with an extremely conservative family and I saw the daily show on cnn in Japan and Australia it changed my entire life. It was the ONLY thing that made sense. For so many people comedy WAS the truth when Jon was in charge because he had the intellectual chops to back it up so as great as it is today, it’s still a bit shallower than it was back then.

As a Swede, with no ties to the middle east what so ever, I remember the few episodes of "Al bernameg" (the program) that I saw with English subtitles and wished there more. As funny as Trevor Noah can be, I still feel sad that it wasn't Bassem Youssef who took over "The Daily Show" when Jon retired. It would have been amazing.
@minasoliman
@minasoliman Год назад
Bassem Youssef I think would have turned it down. He turned down other countries who offered to revamp his show Barnameg. He is principled to say that he would only do the show in his country Egypt, and if Egypt won’t have him back, he won’t do it. I hope one day Egypt may “repent” from its close-mindedness because I do miss that show. And while one can disagree with him politically, one should be able to disagree without being threatening, and Egypt unfortunately was not ready for that, as the people are prone to being lemmings to an idolized leadership that is second only to Allah, rather than being opinionated enough for a functional democracy.
@DrTssha
@DrTssha Год назад
At the very least, I'm glad he was able to do his Democracy Handbook series ("I'm Italian") and very much enjoyed his book Laughing through the Arab Spring. So I'm glad he's able to parlay his craft outside of an Al bernameg style program (only saw one or two episodes, but I definitely laughed).

One who is obviosly talented, funny and smart, one who cares aabout his People just as all of us do around the World. Congrats to him, as well as Jon Stewart, for showing us that above been Americans, Egypsians, Israelis, Palestinians or whatever, we are part of one diverse community and we all must learn to see the reflection of ourselves in the ones around us, no matter how diferent they may seen, because our common future depends on this simple, but also so extraordinary dificult principle.

Same for many Europeans. His show was one of the first American talks shows I started to follow and his show clearly stuck out from others. I had only started to watch his show regularly and rewatch his older videos when I saw that he was quitting. I was kind of devastated, but his work definitely lives on!

I live in Botswana, Southern Africa and was also introduced to Jon from CNN in the early 2000s around the age of 10. My parents watched the news religiously and I absolutely hated it, but they would leave it on and sometimes ild catch the Daily Show afterwards, and loved it! Been a fan ever since! He got me into following American politics and shaped a lot of my ideology. Love him and glad he gave us such great comedians as John Oliver and Stephen Colbert!

From the Philippines, political satirical humor like the daily show gave me an awakening that you don't need to be boring to be respected. Jon Stewart is the OG of political satire and now we have Jimmy Kimmel, Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, Seth Myers and a lot more that shows how funny can be respected. Now, we pray someone like you to be here.

born and raised in Egypt, i remember the beginning of Bassem's youtube show and how quickly it became viral, the reason for its great success was first and foremost the courage him and his colleagues who made the show had, a courage to speak up publicly about politics. this is something that was not done. everyone in Egypt knew the daily show and watched it religiously. and yet everyone knew that a show like the daily show could never work in Egypt because publicly criticizing political leaders was just a death sentence. but Bassem and his colleagues dared to do it in a time where it was needed the most. the Arab spring was a very confusing time for Egyptians. Bassem's show was more than just a satirical reflection on the current politics, it was the SOLE source of truth and reason in a sea of propaganda and lies and deception. he was the voice of an entire nation saying "ENOUGH!" exposing the hypocrisy and shedding light on all the wrongdoings in hopes of making a change and pushing for a better future through public critique. I respect you and your colleagues tremendously, Bassem! i still remember running to the nearest "kahwa" whenever it was time to watch his show, the entire street would be sitting there watching. his influence was too strong to leave alone. Once the military regime came in, the first thing they did was "quiet" any and every voice. they were the sole source of truth now. they fed you their version of reality and you had to accept it or else. شكراً يا باسم على كل إلي عملته

Bassem's account of learning of Stewart mirrors my own. When they started airing Comedy Central I would avidly watch Jon even though I was too young to understand all the jokes and not American enough to understand their politics, but his critical eye, integrity, and sense of humor sparked something in me. It's probably why I ended up in journalism.
