Commenting on the prize, Stewart said, “I am truly honored to receive this award. I have long admired and been influenced by the work of Mark Twain, or, as he was known by his given name, Samuel Leibowitz.”
“For more than three decades, Jon Stewart has brightened our lives and challenged our minds as he delivers current events and social satire with his trademark wit and wisdom. For me, tuning into his television programs over the years has always been equal parts entertainment and truth”
- Deborah F. Rutter, Kennedy Center President
The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain. As a social commentator, satirist, and creator of characters, Clemens was a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social injustice and personal folly.
As a recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, Stewart received a copy of an 1884 bronze portrait bust of Mark Twain sculpted by Karl Gerhardt (1853-1940). Previous recipients can be seen by scrolling down this page.
Capital One® is the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor as part of the bank’s three-year, $3 million gift to fund Comedy at the Kennedy Center, a signature program at the Center focused on elevating comedy as an art form and uniting the community through laughter.
The 23rd Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is under the direction of the creative team from Done + Dusted, the Kennedy Center’s producing partner for the Mark Twain Prize since 2018. This year’s ceremony marks the 23rd year that the Kennedy Center’s marquee comedy award will be broadcast nationally.
The event was created by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Bob Kaminsky, Peter Kaminsky, Mark Krantz, and John Schreiber. The Kennedy Center is grateful to Cappy McGarr for his steadfast support of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor since its inception in 1998.

@@CyberCheese392 its simple mass psychology, individuals in large group never think as singular individuals, but rather as a mass, so no, its always leaders fault when talking about masses, because masses are more easily influenced then singular individuals. I dont want to deminish you, just think about it, and dont trust people who want to "hack" your mind. Remember that in every public debate, its never about the ideas, its always about who is stating those ideas. Stay true to your morals, dont follow people, follow principles. Unfortunately some leaders will always try to make you hate someone else based only on who they are, dont fall for that, they will throw you under the bus the second they will no longer need you.

I grew up in a hardcore Fox News watching household and watching Jon on the daily show not only helped me see my family’s bullshit, but helped me keep my sanity in those times. He would highlight almost exactly what I was going through while trying to talk reason into them. How they wouldn’t believe me or hang on a single point while ignoring everything else. Without him I would have absolutely believed I was in the wrong and fell right back into the bubble. I know this sounds lame, but between Picard on TNG and Jon Stewart on TDS, I had two solid TV father figures to emulate while growing up and that, again lame I know, made all the difference for me. So, thanks Jon. You deserve this.
@wholeshebang1
@wholeshebang1 Год назад
It's not *weak ("lame" is ableist) to acknowledge and be grateful to two men - one who played the character of a principled leader on TV, the other who wittily critiqued and called out politicians on their BS - who educated you on ethics and politics while growing up in a home with people less aware. I can relate: my father was a cop and was conservative, while I blossomed into a free-thinking musician and fine artist - things he couldn't relate to, and persecuted me for. I couldn't wait to move out after college!

I am glad you were able to find your true self and passion in an environment that didn't foster the care and value towards that goal like it should have. Ironically, in my similar situation, (my father was a strict military kind of guy) I also became a musician. I think music breathes expression, heart and freedom of thought (Pretty much where my Alias "ThoughT" or "ThoughTMusic" came from) and it has the beautiful ability to permit even the most stubborn and stoic among us to think or see differently because of it. It's like a Siren's call, inviting you to let it take you on a journey and I'm so here for it lol. Thanks again for the encouragement and I hope you're well these 8 months later.

He was where I went as well. It's interesting to watch him today and realize just how damn important he was, and yet also realize how much I've grown beyond him. And yet, even feeling/knowing I'm somewhere to the side of him now, I realize how powerful he could be today. In a lot of ways, John Oliver has taken his place, though without quite the same market penetration, I imagine. It's all just a little off, a little wrong, but Stewart, and now Oliver, were and are the only people actually pushing the public to engage in remotely meaningful efforts of defiance. Stewart was never perfect, but goddamn, he was the best.

I'd never heard of Jon Stewart before today. I'm a West Aussie and haven't seen the US shows he has worked in and on. I stumbled across Dave Chappelles speech just prior to this and thought it was one of the best speeches I'd ever heard, honouring his long time friend and colleague. Then it auto started on Jon Stewart's acceptance speech and although I already knew he was a good man from DC, this speech blew me away. Needless to say his name is going to be in my RU-vid and Google searches for some time as I attempt to catch up on all I missed. What a remarkable human being. Thanks for the comedy and the reminder of the precious times spent with good friends and that continuing with art of any kind is what matters on a daily basis. So glad I finally found you.

He has dedicated his life to something greater than mere entertainment. He'll make you laugh, he might make you angry, he'll sometimes make you cry, but he will always encourage you to reflect and think. I never watched the Daily Show growing up (American politics wasn't really an interesting subject for a Canadian middle schooler), but his later work and investment in generating change for thousands of lives by influencing policy has been inspiring. He's pointing out to the people in power who have forgotten that there is a social contract they are obliged to uphold, that doing something merely for the optics or tax benefits isn't enough. He understands that America is run on the commodification of goods and services, but that there needs to be a recognition of morality and humanity in any decision, especially when those policies impact millions of lives. He is a voice of reason in unreasonable times, and he is not just someone I admire, but someone I aim to emulate. We should all conduct ourselves with such a moral compass as the one Jon has.

Big brother is not always an arm of the government, it's not always on the right, and at certain moments in history the audience withholds laughs not because they don't like the joke but because they're afraid of consequences. Plausible that Chappelle could engage Stewart on this point and what a dialogue that would be to listen to.

he retired from the daily show too early. This man took the soul of George Carlin and made it his own. From 2003 onward, I couldn't miss an episode of the daily show. It was must see tv day in and day out. This man is truly inspirational. He is my idol growing up and it has not changed one iota. The amount of talent that came from that show is staggering. The only one id put above it would be SNL and honestly, its pretty close. The biggest tragedy is that John had to wait until this year to get it. He deserved it a decade ago. Everyday I see the correspondence from the daily show like Colbert, Bee and Oliver. They are great, but no one can come close to the impact John Stewart has had on my life. This is waaaaaay overdue.

Many of us said the same thing about his sudden retirement, but he really wanted to focus on family. He almost had a heart attack when Trump decided to run for office. A missed opportunity, yes, but like he said, politics as we knew it is over, and he wouldn't be able to play catch-up with how things eventually played out. Jon hasn't changed since i knew him since the 7th grade. He loved politics and a good debate.

@@kartoffelschweinehund9007 You got a few answers but I don't think the full explanation yet. So the banana peel is a symbol of comedy and he combined those two associations.

Twain and Stewart have even more in common than what is seen on the surface. How many people know this about Twain, that the U.S. government was even careful to suppress this about him in the teaching of history in schools: Before Afghanistan, the longest unilaterally staged conflict the U.S. was ever in was the Philippine-American War. (Most citizens haven't even heard of it.) An embarrassment of the government, Mark Twain was one of the leaders of the Anti-Imperialist Movement challenging the U.S.' involvement in that unjust conflict, and even wrote a short story about it, called "The War Prayer." When his first meager attempt at getting the story published failed, a friend asked him if he would try again to get it published. Twain's answer was something to the effect of "I cannot get it published in my lifetime; only dead men can tell the truth." It was indeed ultimately published posthumously. Stewart, like Twain, has remained an embarrassment to the U.S. government, pretty much for the same reasons. Someday in the future, a rising voice of our time will become a recipient of the Twain-Stewart Award. (A two-headed statue? Sure; why not?)

Mark Twain was an astounding man, and Jon deserved this prize more than a decade ago, but I hope that I can live long enough to see a 'Jon Stewart' prize be awarded because while Jon is a comedian he is the best satirist of our generation granted, Bassam Yousef is right there next to him. Jon mixed Satire with a genuine desire to educate and inform and while there is only one person who has really taken up the helm and been in the same league as Jon Stewart, that being John Oliver, he still largely birthed the idea that satire could be a form of journalism as well. Even the friends who have never seen Jon Stewart, and barely know who he is, have the same flickers of humor, sharpness of wit, thoughtfulness, and even political ideals that Jon talked about for nearly 16 years, his influence on me and those that I know who were influenced 2nd or 3rd hand by people like me saturates those of my age group, I play on kickball teams and I don't choose my team I get assigned to one randomly so I meet new people, everyone I have met for 3 years ( 3 'seasons' a year) and they all have Jon Stewart influence on them when politics or important events are brought up... *just want to add I am not attempting to say everyone I have met has been influenced even those who have is seen as the influence may not have been influenced it may be their own ideals, but considering how wide spread it is and how many of the indicators are present I cannot say it is simply coincidence, just as I cannot say that the influences of 9/11 aren't apparent on my generation, or the influences of the 2008 recession.* Jon was like Mark Twain in that he was the first of his kind, in that he was an expert comedian who has greatly influenced American society.

Jon put into words so much of what was floating around in my head and helped me keep perspective in what was often a scary time to be a young person. He helped me not to take myself too seriously as I formed my opinions. He taught me to question my leaders and what I should expect from them. He convinced me of the importance of doing my own research, of knowing this country’s history, and to form my ideals based on facts and not beliefs. Who would have thought that a satirical news show could do so much? He paved the way for Stephen Colbert and John Oliver who have been my comfort since I lost my “TV Boyfriend.” He wasn’t that just because his was often the last voice I heard before I fell asleep most nights, but because his perfect blend of sarcasm, intelligence, awareness and yes, handsomeness set the bar pretty high for prospective dates. He didn’t just help me figure out who I wanted to date. He helped me figure out who I wanted to BE; a responsible citizen, a REAL person who speaks out for the voiceless, who is angered by injustice and fights for what is right, and someone who uses humor not just to make people laugh, but to make them think. His time on the Daily Show was revolutionary and became must-see viewing. He took a silly comedy show and turned it into something that got many people interested in social issues of the day. I loved his interviews and it provided me with many books to place on my must-read list. It was sad to see him leave but towards the end you could see the events of the time were taking their toll, and it was one mass shooting too many that finally broke him. I will never forget his comments after 9/11 and trying not to break out crying. It was a tough time for everyone, whether they were directly or indirectly effected by this horrible event. It must be tough to do a programme that is essentially comical in nature and have to address some terrible events, but I think he and his great team did an admirable job. I still have mixed feelings about his replacement and wish the position was given to Stephen Colbert or Samantha Bee or a couple others who would have been outstanding successors. But both found their own unique niche. I wish I could have seen the show live-it must have been fun.

I have to disagree on the final part about his successor. Trevor Noah has been the progressive change that show needed. Since his takeover, the show has felt more multifaceted & inclusive for a more globalized generation not just White Americans & that's why it's been successful even after Stewart left. The Daily Show is still one of the most influential shows online thanks to Noah's viral videos. So I'm grateful Jon Stewart chose a worthy host who was initially underrated but proved people like you wrong & now he is 7 years deep & his iteration of the show is a success, especially to people of color like myself.

@@italiannn16 Dear Sir or Madame I would kindly suggest that you'd listen carefully to Mr. Stewart’s differentiated speech, before conflating political views with the dangers of autocracy, work and success as well as economical hardship and governmental support and/or overreach. The comment above was made in the supportive spirit of doing what you love, despite success or failure. It is in no way a sentiment to troll or polarize, due to its basic human need to find something meaningful to do in life. Kind regards
@italiannn16
@italiannn16 Год назад
@@railcatcher2 But supporting an autocracy is a political view. For instance, wanting to disarm your citizens is the first thing EVERY single dictator has ever done. He is for gun control. He is and has always been a hard left democrat. Those people believe in big government and suggest that telling people to work hard to succeed is somehow immoral. No, I won't listen to his speech. I rather listen to a sane, humble man like Ben Carson who LITERALLY went from poverty to saving lives. Of course people like Jon Stewart hate him. I wonder why??
@railcatcher2
@railcatcher2 Год назад
@@italiannn16 P.S.: If Mr. Stewart is a liberal, which is defined among others as: "an advocate or adherent of liberalism especially in individual rights." I'm not quite sure how someone like that is a supporter of an autocracy. Isn't "liberal autocracy" a contradiction in terms?

Jon Stewart not only gave us the pleasure of witnessing his genius but through his leadership ensured that we had generations of brilliant comedic voices, so it is only fitting that his Mark Twain award speech ended with him talking about how leaders should lead. Bravo Jon!

I was 26 in 1996 when I first went to the States for a 6 month English course. I could already express myself, understand and be understood, but it was far from decent. Watching tv at night I found this weird channel called Comedy Central, totally devoted to... comedy. It was an alien concept to a born and raised Brazilian. Among all the faces and voices I used to see on that channel, two names stuck out: George Carlin and John Stewart. I marvelled at the fact that not only could I understand what they were saying, but I was laughing my ass off. Which means I understood also the context, the culture, the customs. And soon it became clear to me that they were not telling only jokes... they were telling the truth. They were philosophers and political commentators. And I became addicted to them, to this day. I saw all their specials and read all their books, and have to thank them for opening my eyes for issues I didn't even know existed and needed my attention.

Tremendous. A man of his stature and understanding of HOW the system works, and he still has hope, still struggles against the vast tabula rasa of pre & post civil war prejudices and ignorance; it inspires us all to join in the struggle of the deterioration of the truly original American mind and spirit. Jon and all the brilliance that surrounds and envelops him KNOW what it truly means to be an American. all the others are left in the pig wallow that they hold on to as if THAT makes them American, or as if they care. Please wake up soon America; and listen to those who genuinely care.
