Ending #27
Bastion
PC / Steam
Developer: Supergiant Games
Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive
Release: 2011
I have my wife to thank for showing me this amazing game. I probably wouldn't have played it so soon and left it in a long list of "...To Play" games that already fills my Steam library. Steam makes it too easy to buy games and for a good price to boot....but this isn't about Steam...
Bastion is an amazing game, I haven't fallen in love with such a game in a very long time. Granted, I love video games and dozens of great titles have come out since I started playing them, but this game has elevated itself into my personal spotlight of top ten greatest. I'll probably have to kick out one of my stragglers like Suikoden or such, but Bastion definitively deserves a solid spot on my top ten. That's serious stuff since I never change that list. The stone tablets in my game room will have to be chiseled again out of the finest marble and a new ascent up Mt. Sinai shall be undertaken.
This should be the poster child for action role playing, Amazing graphics, colorful settings, wonderful music, tight gameplay; the list of accolades this game deserves is amazing.
The story is told through narration by gravely voiced character named Rucks. It's never overbearing and it will never get old. The narrative sets the pace of the story and gives insights to each area, a candid look into the thoughts and emotions of the hero, and slowly weaves an ever subtle climax. By the end, you are hanging on to every word the man has to say. The whole experience is punctuated by gripping music and a wonderful cast of characters.
To really understand this ending you have to play the game. Without giving away the plot intricacies, Bastion reveals the culmination of war between two cultures, those who live in the sky and those who live underground. The tale is Aesopian in flavor and will leave one to question the follies of man and the lengths he will take to destroy his brother.
If I rated my games on this list Bastion would easily get a 10/10 as it is one of the best games of 2011. Everyone should pick it up and play it. I'm glad my wife insisted I play this classic.

When the enemy respects you so much for picking up one of their wounded kin that they themselves struck down, to the point where the one person who attacks you out of line is beaten down. Powerful.

I always saved Zulf because you can't blame a man for what he does in the depths of pain. Zulf lost everything that he loved and cared about and he needed someone to blame and the people of The Bastion were easy targets because most of them were the last Caelondians. In his mind the Caelondians took everything from him and they were solely to blame for everything that happened even though that wasn't the case. I also always chose the evacuation ending because you have to move forward no matter how shitty the past is... You got to move forward and make the world better than it was before no matter how much you want to go back and change things. Leave the past in the past and move toward the future... Fight for a better tomorrow... Always.

I chose evacuate because over the course of the game, you gain a fondness for the support cast. The idea of undoing this friendship caused me more distress than the idea of the world not being healed. Doesn't stop the ending being bittersweet regardless.

I love this ending, so glad it was the one I picked during my playthrough. In a way, it feels like accepting responsibility for the calamity more than restoring the past does.

Me too. I like to think that's why they made the choice in the first place, intending this one to feel like the right one. This ending made me feel accomplished.

Zulf might have been a fool, but his heart was in the right place. He did what he though was best for his people, although it only brought them more grief. He didn't deserve to die for that; He deserved to be rescued.

I feel this is the most powerful of the ending choices. I feel the closing song has more weight here than in the other version. Also seeing Zia's face in the "good" ending just broke my heart. At Least here it's a good sad rather than a sad that makes you contemplate if you made a mistake.

I saw a video contemplating that the Bastion is actually a story about a failed relationship and the calamity is the symbol of how earth-shattering a bad break up sometimes can be.

Snobby Gamer Hell it's a spot on theory, I never thought about it, but when making the last decisions I was contemplating my own failed relationship that I couldn't or still cant'l let go, I saved Zulf and made the evacuation, and the comparison you mention is really accurate now that I think about it

Never had a game made me chock up like I did with the Evacuation Ending with Zulf. It's also kinda funny how Ruks tries to project the kid as him, but the kid comes back with all sorts of surprises.

Really this ending is not only the most powerful of the game in my opinion but also one of the best of other ending, nowadays you're normally saving the universe and being the hero honorably destroying evil guys from the government or religious cults only just choosing to be good or evil, or with which girl to stay at the end. But here there no ending to be considered bad or good, and this particular one is really powerful, forgiveness is something often forgotten nowadays, and when even the enemies stop attacking... just powerful...

Most jprgs/wrpgs doesn't show the side of the antagonists and why they're evil in the first place. Well, being just evil? no sympathy what so ever. Don't even get me started with grinding/killing innocent monsters when you're the so called "hero" that will save mankind. Pretty much most jrpgs are shallow with their beastiary and antagonists.

I feel this is the good ending. If I go by what's said in the New Game +, I feel that the Restoration Ending just loops over to the beginning of the game.

I wish the bastion could restore in a different way. Instead of going back in time it would just create a new world over the calamity.

It feels a bit odd that the choice for multiple endings even exists in this story. I finished the game going with the restoration ending, because when the chance is provided, there's a part of me that just thinks that's the right thing to do, but the option simply existing feels like a hole in the overall narrative of Bastion. The whole theme of the story is adaption. From the Bastion being put together to the Ura wasting their time compounding on the past, the whole story is wrapped around the message of "What's done is done, it's how we move on that matters" and this ending is beautiful at wrapping that story up. It's a nice bookend to the whole narrative. The Restoration ending feels like an ending that belongs to a wholly different story. Like, the core idea the story is based on doesn't support and is in fact counter-intuitive to the idea of the Restoration ending, which is about compounding upon the past and dwelling on fixing it instead of coping with reality.

Exactly the point. When faced with pain and sorrow, do you long for the way things were before, or press on to a better future? The Evacuation ending is the representation of finally being able to leave the past behind.

That’s what is suggested in that ending, actually. It’s implied to be something that just keeps inevitably looping back until you’re able to let go.

This is actually the good ending. In the other ending the calamity just happens all over again. Rucks talks about it on the island with the final shard. He says there is nothing to prevent the calamity from happening again. Also when you start up a new game + after doing the restoration ending you can hear “See you next time” or something like that. He also said that at the end of the restoration ending. This means that time literally looped. So if restore the world the calamity happens over and over again in an infinite loop.
@lucaomeri8730
@lucaomeri8730 4 года назад
If I remember corectly, he says "maybe I'll se ya.... in the next one" at the end of the restoration ending: this could mean that either he knows that some tiny bits of the past will change, creating a world without calamity, and he hopes to see the kid there, or that he knows that nothing will change enough to prevemt the calamity and he is ready to live in a loop, I like the former most because I find it more fitting for him

Zia’s voice acting was rather disappointing, compared to the narrator. She sounded so casual explaining the ultimatum the Kid needed to face, as if the fate of the world wasn’t at stake lol

This may seem like the selfish ending but I think the restoration would have just created a timeloop with the same bastards making the same decision.
@kirbyslayer20

I like to see the true ending as first restoration then evacuation. You choose to restore caelondia because rucks told you to, and he hints you might never forget what you did for the bastion even with the restoration. So thats when new game+ comes in, the calamity still happened. Nothing changed. So you go through the entire game all over again and when you reach the end this time you choose evacuation, because the kid knows the calamity will loop if he restores caelondia. And we get evactuation as the final ending.

@ApexGale

I know I'm a year late, but look at it this way. The Ura did nothing but attack. Even Zulf turned on you, betrayed you, and the Ura struck him down even though he was one of their kind. And then the Kid comes in, and instead of abandoning Zulf and taking the battering ram with him to escape, he abandons the one thing that could have guaranteed his escape and picks up Zulf's body instead, intending to save him. The Ura had seen so much bloodshed that they were shocked to see a Caelondian abandon his guarantee of leaving just to save an Ura. They had so much respect that when one Ura started firing again, they quickly beat him down.

why not just pick the battering ram up, clear out the enemies, then go back and pick up zulf to take home?

Likely because the time it would take you to take down all the ura in your way would be too long to save Zulf. Keep in mind he’d been beaten to hell before the kid showed up.
