As a caregiver, it is important to make sure the home is safe and comfortable for the person in your care. Sam from Elizz, goes through some bathroom safety tips for seniors to help keep the person in your care safe at home. Here are some things that you can do as their caregiver:
• Remove scatter mats and excess clutter to minimize the chance of tripping
• Ensure path to bathroom is clear and well lit
• Install a commode or a raised toilet seat with arms (for safe transfer, make sure feet can still touch the floor)
• Install a bathroom safety grab bar near the toilet, in the bathtub, or on the shower wall
• Keep toilet paper, soap, and towels easily within reach
• Utilize a safety bathtub seat in the shower or bathtub to make bathing easier
• Install a hand held show head to minimize movement and make bathing easier for the caregiver
• Place a non-slip mat in the shower stall or bath (or use a rubber safety mat with suction cup backing)
